Tsunamier er ikke kun naturlige katastrofer, men også kraftige påmindelser om menneskelig modstandskraft og fællesskab. For nylig er det Pacific Tsunami Museum i Hilo, Hawaii, kommet i økonomiske problemer, hvilket indikerer, at samfundet skal gribe ind for at redde det kulturelle landemærke. Dette museum har haft en central rolle i at uddanne offentligheden om tsunami-driven, og dets lukning vil efterlade et vakuum i den vigtige undervisning om katastrofer og sikkerhed.

Samtidig markerer verden 20-årsdagen for den tragiske indiske hav-tsunami, der ramte kysterne den 26. december 2004.
