Et kraftigt jordskælv med en styrke på 7,3 ramte Vanuatu tirsdag, tæt på hovedstaden Port Vila, og skabte omfattende ødelæggelser. Bygninger er blevet beskadiget, herunder den amerikanske ambassade, og der er rapporteret om adskillige dødsfald. Indbyggerne blev ramt af chocken fra det pludselige rystende jordskælv, og redningshold arbejder non-stop for at finde overlevende i ruinerne. Mens vi venter på at få opdateringer om skadeomfanget, vokser bekymringen for de mere end 200 mennesker, der er blevet såret, og de mange, der nu står uden hjem.

Kommende eftervirkninger gør kun situationen værre. To store vandreservoirer er blevet destrueret, hvilket betyder, at hovedstaden står uden rent vand, netop når det er allermest nødvendigt. Internationale hjælpeteams er begyndt at ankomme for at støtte de lokale redningsindsatser, men med ødelagte kommunikationslinjer er det en udfordrende opgave. Man frygter også, at det skrøbelige sundhedssystem i Vanuatu bliver overbelastet af sygdomme, hvis ikke der hurtigt bliver tilvejebragt rent vand og tilstrækkelig sanitet.

Mere end 14 liv er bekræftet tabt, og redsels historierne om unge familier, der mister deres hjem, og ældre, der kæmper for at finde sikkerhed, bliver bemærkelsesværdige. Det siges, at det kun er halvdelen af det, der rent faktisk er blevet ramt - der er mange, der indtil videre bare ønsker, at det er en drøm, de kan vågne op fra. De, der har oplevet rystelserne, beskriver det som et bombet område, med bygninger, der ligner papkasser, der er blevet trådt ned.

Men i den tragiske situation er der også håb. Mens redningshold kæmper imod tiden, har børn og unge mænd taget initiativet til at opbygge en midlertidig samlingsplads, hvor de kan give husly og mad til dem, der har mistet alt. Dette fællesskab, der opstår midt i katastrofen, viser, at selv i mørket kan lyset fra menneskelighed og medfølelse skinne klart.
