I et drama, der næsten ville kunne gøre de bedste Hollywood-filmskaber misundelige, afsluttede Lewis Hamilton sin enestående karriere hos Mercedes under Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Trods at have startet som nummer 16, formåede den syvdobbelte verdensmester at køre sig op til en imponerende fjerdeplads. Det var som at se en superhelt komme tilbage fra de døde, kun denne gang var det med vilje og med stil. Fansene kunne ikke andet end at juble, når Hamilton lavede sin berømte overhaling på den sidste omgang – en afslutning på en æra.

Under løbet delte Hamilton sine følelsesmæssige tanker omkring at afslutte et 12-årigt partnerskab med Mercedes, som har været historisk i Formel 1. "Det er svært at give slip," sagde Hamilton, mens han knyttede sine minder om at have vundet seks verdensmesterskaber med teamet. Med tåre i øjet og et hjerte fuld af minder sagde han endelig farvel til sit andet hjem, og de fans, der har støttet ham gennem disse utallige strabadser.
