Den seneste debat om toiletfaciliteter på Capitol Hill er blevet mere intens end nogensinde, efter at republikanerne udråbte en udtalelse om, at de vil forbyde transkønnede kvinder adgang til kvindetoiletter. Dette angreb, der direkte retter sig mod den nyvalgte repræsentant Sarah McBride, som er den første transkønnede kvinde i Kongressen, har fået mange til at føle, at det er mere end blot en politik – det er en kamp om rettigheder. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez har været hurtig til at støtte McBride og beskylder republikaneren Nancy Mace for at bruge angrebet som en mulighed for fundraising og politisk opmærksomhed, hvilket kun tilføjer brændstof til den allerede glødende debat.

Sarah McBride har selv udtalt, at hun ikke er her for at kæmpe om toiletter, men for at skabe en bedre fremtid for alle transkønnede personer. Med det sagt betyder det ikke, at hun ikke vil kæmpe for sine rettigheder og rettighederne for andre. "Jeg kan klare det; andre burde ikke skulle," sagde hun i en interview med The Advocate. Med en sådan holdning, står McBride som et forbillede for mange og repræsenterer ikke kun en stemme for LGBTQ+-samfundet, men også for dem, der kæmper for at blive hørt i en verden, hvor diskrimination stadig er en realitet.

Rep. Nancy Mace har ikke været stille i denne debat og har uheldigvis kaldt McBride for "det" under en ophedet diskussion på tv. Denne form for misgendering fra Mace viser, hvordan visse politikere vil bruge nedrighed som et våben i deres retorik – en taktik, der har vist sig at skabe både vrede og opbakning på tværs af det politiske spektrum. Ocasio-Cortez, som altid har været en forkæmper for lighed, skarpt kommenterede denne kynisme og facade, som GOP fremfører i deres stræben efter at separere og nedværdige transkønnede individer.

I takt med at denne strid udvikler sig, er det vigtigt at huske på de reelle konsekvenser af sådanne love og meningsfulde angreb. Ifølge en rapport fra Williams Institute har 29% af transkønnede individer angivet, at de har oplevet diskrimination eller tilsvining, når de har forsøgt at få adgang til toiletter i overensstemmelse med deres kønsidentitet. Desværre viser undersøgelser også, at lovgivning som den foreslåede, ofte fører til endnu mere stigmatisering og isolation for allerede marginaliserede grupper. Disse angreb mod individer som Sarah McBride er derfor ikke kun politiske, men også meget personlige for mange, der lever i skyggen af en dagsorden mod lighed.
