Dette skete efter en UEFA Europa League-kamp mellem Ajax og Maccabi Tel Aviv, hvor flere fans blev overfaldet af en gruppe demonstranter, der ifølge lokale rapporter består af både muslimer og arabere. Det er ironisk, at en by med så rig en historie om toleranse nu oplever vold, der minder om de mørkeste tider under den nazistiske beskæmpelse af jøderne.
Efter angrebene på søndag aften har Amsterdam kommune indført et forbud mod demonstrationer i tre dage, og politiet har grebet ind mod de såkaldte "antisemitiske grupper" bag angrebene. Ifølge politiets rapporter blev ti israelske fans såret under overfaldet, og mange måtte søge tilflugt på deres hoteller, mens de blev belejret af de fremmødte grupper. Den israelske regering har svaret hurtigt på hændelsen, med premierminister Benjamin Netanyahu, der beordrede evakuering af israelske fans ved at sende fly til Amsterdam, for at bringe dem sikkert hjem.
