Millioner af mennesker fejrer Diwali denne uge, også kendt som "Festival of Lights". Denne betagende højtid har dybe rødder i indiske traditioner og fejres ikke kun i Indien, men også af den indiske diaspora i lande som USA. Diwali markerer en religiøs og kulturel feiring, hvor familier samles for at fejre lys, liv og overvindelse af mørket. Alle, uanset tro, kan finde glæde i denne festival, hvor skønheden ved lysfejringen bringer alle sammen.

Diwali har sin baggrund i flere gamle legender, herunder historien om Lord Rama, der vendte tilbage til sit hjem i Ayodhya efter 14 års eksil. Befolkningen fejrede hans hjemkomst ved at tænde lys overalt, hvilket symboliserer sejr over mørket og uretfærdighed. I år vil mange sydasiatiske religiøse samfund begynde at fejre Diwali, og lokaliteter som Rothschild og Greenwood inviterer alle til at deltage i festlighederne. Disse fejringer byder på traditionel mad, dans, sang og naturligvis de fantastiske lys!

Pasadena Hindu Temple og Heritage Foundation har netop lanceret deres årlige fem-dages Diwali Celebration. Denne festival reflekterer ikke kun over religiøse traditioner, men også hvordan sådanne fester bidrager til det lokale samfunds sammenhold. I mange tilfælde er Diwali ikke kun begrænset til de hinduiske samfund; det er en tid, hvor mennesker fra alle livets hjørner kommer sammen og deler glæden ved lys og fest.

Traditionelt er Diwali dagen, hvor man tilbeder gudinder som Lakshmi, gudinden for velstand, og Ganesh, gudernes beskytter. Det er også dagen, hvor man tænder Diyas, små olielamper, som symboliserer overgangen fra mørke til lys. Vidste du, at Diwali betyder "række af lys", og at det hele begyndte for mere end 2.500 år siden? En anden sjov fact: Vintrene er en fantastisk tid at fejre Diwali, da festlighederne strækker sig over flere dage, hvor alle kun tænker på glæde og sammenhold!
