Iran har for alvor kastet sig ind i konflikten i Mellemøsten med en massiv beskydning af mindst 180 missiler mod Israel. Ifølge den israelske militær talsmand, admiral Daniel Hagari, har Israels luftforsvar formået at afvise mange af missilerne, men nogle er desværre landet i israelsk terræn og forårsaget skade. Den truende situation har fået israelske embedsmænd til at advare om, at landet vil gennemføre en betydelig gengældelse mod Iran i de kommende dage.

Samtidig er situationen blevet yderligere kompliceret af USA’s aktive involvering, hvor militære enheder i Middelhavet koordinerer indsats med israelske forsvarsstyrker for at beskytte Israel. Denne internationale støtte viser, hvor skrøbelig den nuværende situation i Mellemøsten er, især med de tætte bånd mellem USA og Israel, der står overfor en potentielt eskalerende konflikt med Iran. Advarslerne for udvidet krig er stigende, rammer om den iranske trussel gebærder sig til at være mere end blot ord, men en reel handling.

Allerede nu er det blevet meldt ud, at israelske tropper er trukket ind i sydlige Libanon for at bekæmpe den iranske-støttede militante gruppe Hezbollah. I takt med, at verden ser til, kan der opstå opfordringer til international dialog for at nedtrappe situationen. Som historien viser, kan et våbenkapløb hurtigt føre til katastrofale konsekvenser som dem vi så under krigen i 2006, hvor israelske styrker oplevede betydelig modstand fra Hezbollah. Målrettethed kan skifte hurtigere end missiler kan flyve, og i denne volatile situation kan politisk skakspil have højere omkostninger end nogensinde før.
