Hvert år på årsdagen for 9/11 samles folk over hele verden for at mindes de tragiske begivenheder, der ændrede historiens gang. I Marshall, USA, inviteres offentligheden til en rørende mindehøjtidelighed i Memorial Park, hvor deltagerne reflekterer over tabet og samler kræfter for at skabe forandring. I Pennsylvania er det også blevet en tradition, at alle elever stopper op i et øjebliks stilhed for at ære ofrene og erkende det dybe indtryk, dagen har sat. Det er en påmindelse om, at selv de yngste blandt os bærer på denne arv af ansvar og samhørighed.
Major League Baseball, der hvert år æres den samme dag, forbereder en række tributter for at hylde de liv, der blev taget samt de mange, hvis liv blev forandret. Det handler ikke kun om at mindes, men også om at fejre den styrke, samfundet finder i modgang. 23 år efter de tragiske angreb, kan vi ikke undgå at bemærke, hvordan dagen er indhyllet i både sorg og en politisk debat, der genbesøger miraklerne og fejltagelserne, der fulgte efter.
For dem, der levede igennem denne dag, som tvillingerne Christian og Ivan Bengtson, der så angrebene på skærmen som teenagere, handler mindet ikke kun om at huske ofrene, men også om de livsforandrende beslutninger, som det førte med sig. Da de blev voksne, inspirerede 9/11 dem til at tage aktiv del i samfundet og føre dialog om ansvar og service.
Hver år ved mindesmærket ved Ground Zero, hvor navne på ofrene bliver læst op, overføres traditionen til kommende generationer, så vi aldrig glemmer grupperne, der blev påvirket.
