I Israel har en nylig generalstrejke oplevet en enorm opbakning fra mange arbejdere, som satte deres arbejde på standby for at råbe myndighederne op om hostagesituationen i Gaza. Demonstranterne føler, at den israelske regering under premierminister Benjamin Netanyahu svigter dem ved ikke at sikre en hurtig og sikker frigivelse af de hostages, der er blevet taget af Hamas. Disse protester, der har fundet sted flere steder i landet, især i Tel Aviv, viser dyb frustration over, at seks hostages har mistet livet under deres fangenskab. Dette har ført til, at mange borgere har lukket veje for at lægge pres på myndighederne.

Men skæbnen tog en uventet drejning, da en retskendelse stoppede strejken kortvarigt, og mange arbejdere måtte vende tilbage til deres pligter. Frygten for ulovlighed har presset strejken frem til ledelsen af fagforeningerne, der ellers havde planlagt en større lukning som en måde at vise solidaritet med de berørte familier. Spændingerne er kun steget, da dødsfaldene blandt hostages har fået både offentligheden og Netanyahus egne ministre til at miste tålmodigheden. Demonstranterne har skabt et crescendo af protester med op til 500.000 deltagere, der appellerer om en større opmærksomhed på de humanitære standarder og livsvilkårene i konflikten. Midt i denne tumult af protester er der også kommet internationalt fokus med britiske myndigheder, der suspenderer adskillige våbenleverancer til Israel på bekymring for brud på humanitær lov.

Udover tumulten herhjemme har Douglas Murray, en britisk journalist og stærk tilhænger af Israel, ytret sin støtte til den israelske regering, hvilket skaber debat om, hvordan de nuværende omstændigheder bør håndteres. Protesterne leder ikke kun til større opmærksomhed, men også til et internationalt pres på Netanyahu-regeringen, som står over for svære valg.

En interessant detalje er, at Netanyahu nu står over for både offentlig opstand og international kritik også fra Vesteuropæiske lande.
