I en dramatisk begivenhed modtog Western Lakes brandchef, Brad Bowen, alarmen om en brand i en hvedemark nær Norwegian Road og Highway K. Brandfolkene var hurtige til at ankomme og fik hurtigt situationen under kontrol, men det viste sig at være en skæbnesvanger påmindelse om de risici, landmænd står overfor under høsten. Brandene kan have en ødelæggende effekt på afgrøderne og landmandens økonomi, så hurtigt og effektivt arbejde fra brandfolkene er uundgåeligt.

På den internationale scene ser vi en blandet udvikling. Mens hvedeeksporten fra Frankrig langsomt går, stiger eksporten af byg uge for uge. I den seneste uge rapporteres det, at der er eksporteret flere hvedepakker til Marokko og byg til Kina. Denne varebytte skaber et fint netværk af handelsmuligheder, og det er interessant at se, hvordan forskellige klimaforhold påvirker de globale markeder for hvede og byg.

Tendenserne fra North Dakota afslører, at hvedehøsten forventes at slå rekorder med et estimeret udbytte på 53,8 bu pr. acre. Dette er resultatet af et optimalt groende klima, der har reduceret antallet af problemer som skimmel og skadedyr. For de landmænd, som har lidt under lokale vejrforhold, er det en lettelse at høre om de lovende resultater fra andre områder.

Sportsligt nok var der lidt dramatik om hvede futures, som har set et fald på 6 cent pr. bushel, mens landet forbereder sig på en rekordhøst. I takt med at temperaturen stiger i de nordlige Plain-afdelinger, blev der også rapporteret om et fald i etanolproduktionen, hvilket kan påvirke hvedepriserne yderligere. Alt i alt præsenterer det sig som et spændende og nervepirrende tidspunkt for både landmænd og forbrugere.

Desuden, for at sætte tingene i perspektiv, kan et enkelt hvedekorn give op til 1.000 nye korn i et godt vækstsæson. Så næste gang du bider i et stykke brød, så tænk på de mange kilometer og dramatiske historier, der kan ligge bag hver bid!
