Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte er blevet valgt som NATO's næste generalsekretær midt i den aktuelle krig i Ukraine. Beslutningen blev taget af de allierede lande under North Atlantic Council-mødet onsdag den 26. juni 2024. Rutte, der er respekteret for sin ærlighed og diplomatiske færdigheder, anses som den perfekte kandidat til at lede verdens største sikkerhedsalliance. Hans udnævnelse blev en formalitet, da hans eneste rival trak sig fra kampen om posten, hvilket gav ham en problemfri vej til toppen. Med mere end et årti i toppen af hollandsk politik, er Rutte velkendt for at finde konsensus og vil have brug for alle sine diplomatisk evner i sin nye rolle som NATO-chef.
