Mitch McConnell, lederen af det republikanske parti i Senatet, har tilsluttet sig lovgivning, der kunne føre til et forbud mod TikTok og kræve, at selskabet bag appen, Kinas ByteDance, skiller sig af med den. Men bevægelsen for lovforslaget er gået i stå i Senatet, og det er uvist, om det vil blive vedtaget. Samtidig er der en ny belønningsapp på vej fra TikTok, der skal øge væksten i Europa ved at tilbyde økonomiske incitamenter for at se deres videoer. McConnell advarede om, at TikTok udgør en trussel for sikkerheden på amerikansk jord og understregede behovet for at handle hurtigt for at begrænse appens indflydelse og forbindelser til Kina. Mens en eventuel forbud ser uundgåeligt ud, vil fjernelsen af TikTok fra det amerikanske marked ikke løse desinformationsproblemet. Den kinesiske regering har også udnyttet TikTok til at målrette specifik disinformation under valgkampen i Taiwan, hvilket har ført til bekymring i politiske kredse.
