Putin sendte en klar signal til Vesten ved at flyve på den moderniserede Tu-160M stratgiske bombe torsdag. Denne handling, set fra Vestens perspektiv, var symbolsk, da bombeplanen er kapabel til at bære atomvåben. Ved at vælge netop denne bombe, der tidligere har været brugt i Ukraine, har Putin sendt et stærkt signal om sine intentioner. Besøget på Kazan Aviation Plant blev ligeledes omtalt, hvor Putin inspicerede de nyopgraderede Tupolev Tu-160M strategiske bombefly. Eftersom denne type fly også kaldes "Blackjacks" af NATO, blev Putins budskab om militær styrke og modernisering understreget. En kampagnestunt blev det kaldt, da præsidenten steg ombord på den supersoniske bomber og fløj under sit besøg i Tatarstan. Efter denne medieombruste flyvetur er det klart, at Putin bevidst viser sine kort i det geopolitiske spil og lader verden vide, at Rusland stadig har stor militærstyrke. Ved at offentliggøre billeder og videoer af flyveturen i medierne har Putin skabt opmærksomhed omkring Ruslands militære kapacitet og modernisering.
