An officer with the Kremlin's bodyguard agency who defected last year over his opposition to the Ukraine invasion provided intimate details about Russian ...

A fire ripped through the camp of a Chinese company managing the construction of a remote hydropower dam in northwestern Pakistan on April 4, officials said. "The main thing is not to lose time, not to lose the chance we have. "If she wants to give an account of her actions, she can do so in The Hague." [Live Briefing](https://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-russia-crisis-crosshairs-live-briefing/31668477.html) gives you all of the latest developments on Russia's full-scale invasion, Kyiv's counteroffensives, Western military aid, global reaction, and the plight of civilians. Moscow described the consultations as "frank and direct," and Ankara said they were held in a "transparent and clear manner" but offered no details. Chernukhin said Deripaska was in contempt by allowing the EN+ Group, which owns 57 percent of Rusal, to relocate from Jersey to Russia in response to U.S. The founder of aluminium giant Rusal was alleged to have breached an undertaking to the court in a lawsuit brought by former Russian Finance Minister Vladimir Chernukhin over a joint venture to develop real estate in Moscow. The Sabail district court made the ruling on April 5 based on charges of the unlawful possession of weapons and involvement in the attempted assassination of a state official. Belarusian authoritarian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenka is headed to Moscow on April 5 for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron said on April 5 in Beijing that anyone helping "aggressor" Russia in the Ukraine conflict would become an "accomplice." The defector, Gleb Karakulov, was a captain in the Federal Protection Service (FSO) at the time of his defection in October. The FSO is essentially the Russian equivalent to the U.S.

Russian defector sheds light on Putin paranoia and his secret train ... (The Guardian)

Former security officer tells of president's strict quarantine and says he has 'lost touch with the world'

He said he had still not spoken with his parents, who were supporters of the war. They postponed the defection several times until nearly the end of the trip, when Karakulov told his fellow officers he was feeling unwell and then fled with his family to the airport. “He only receives information from his closest circle, which means that he lives in an information vacuum,” he said. “This is a ruse to confuse foreign intelligence, in the first place, and secondly, to prevent any attempts on his life,” he said. “They call him the Boss, worship him in every way and only ever talk of him in those terms,” he said. He appears to be the highest-ranking intelligence official to defect since the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

LONDON (AP) — On Oct. 14, a Russian engineer named Gleb Karakulov boarded a flight from Kazakhstan to Turkey with his wife and daughter.

Even last year, Putin continued to insist on strict anti-COVID measures, and FSO employees took shifts in two-week quarantine so there would always be a pool of people cleared to travel with Putin on the train, he said. He said he has taken more than 180 trips with the Russian president, and contrary to widespread speculation, Putin appears to be in better shape than most people his age. Putin didn’t like the fact that airplanes can be tracked, preferring the stealth of a nondescript train car, Karakulov said. “I have never seen him with a mobile phone,” he said. Karakulov said he couldn’t tell his parents about his disillusionment, because their minds had been molded by years of watching Russian state television. He switched off his phone to shut out the crescendo of urgent, enraged messages, said goodbye to his life in Russia and tried to calm his fast-beating heart. AP also confirmed that Karakulov is listed as a wanted man in the Russian Interior Ministry’s public database of criminal suspects. While he was not a confidant of Putin’s, Karakulov spent years in his service, observing him from unusually close quarters from 2009 through late 2022. The Interior Ministry initiated a criminal investigation against Karakulov on Oct. and Europe and corroborated his personal details, including passport numbers, date and place of birth, two registered addresses, and the names and ages of family members. He also offered new details about how Putin’s paranoia appears to have deepened since his decision to invade Ukraine in February 2022. 14, a Russian engineer named Gleb Karakulov boarded a flight from Kazakhstan to Turkey with his wife and daughter.

Putin's Hospital Visits Revealed by Ex-Federal Guard Officer (Newsweek)

Vladimir Putin has regular check-ups at the same time of year at a hospital in the Russian capital, a former intelligence officer said.

Those in direct contact with Putin have "to observe a strict quarantine for two weeks before any event," even the scheduled meetings that last about 15 to 20 minutes, he said. "They are mostly focused on the Donbas." However, in 2022, the check-up took place in April, Karakulov told Russian independent investigative outlet The Dossier Center.
