Blue Beetle Explained: Who Is DC's Newest Cinematic Hero? (IGN Africa)

Another long-standing DC hero is making the jump to the big screen in 2023. The Blue Beetle movie stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes, an ordinary teen who ...

Is Blue Beetle part of the old DCEU, the new DCU, or neither? The Ted Kord Blue Beetle joins the Justice League, paving the way for his iconic partnership with Booster Gold and playing a key role in the DCU up until his death in 2005’s Countdown to Infinite Crisis. Fury of the Gods](/shazam-fury-of-the-gods/173641/news/shazam-fury-of-the-gods-director-says-theres-a-possibility-for-more-shazam-films-despite-dcu-overhau), there's nothing stopping Gunn from working Blue Beetle into his new DCU if that's what Gunn wants. But only now is Blue Beetle appearing in a live-action film. The latter revamped the Blue Beetle mythos by more closely tying Jaime to his predecessor, Ted Kord, and revealing the scarab to be magical in origin rather than extraterrestrial. It’s also worth pointing out that Blue Beetle is the main inspiration for Watchmen’s Nite Owl. In emergencies, Jaime can even activate “infiltrator mode,” which allows the scarab to take control of the suit and dispatch enemies with brutal efficiency. Though DC eventually canceled the Blue Beetle series in 2009, Jaime continued to play a role in books like Teen Titans and Justice League: Generation Lost. Again, Jaime’s own inexperience is the greatest hindrance to his powers, and early on he struggles to bond with the scarab and realize his true potential. While the Blue Beetle character dates all the way back to 1939, Jaime Reyes himself didn’t come along until 2006. Whether alone or fighting alongside groups like the Teen Titans, Blue Beetle is a powerful force for good, even if his scarab initially has darker motives. Jaime quickly embraces his new role as a teen superhero, with his story continuing in the pages of the monthly Blue Beetle comic.

The film also stars Belissa Escobedo ("American Horror Stories," "Hocus Pocus 2") as Jaime's sister, Milagro, and Harvey Guillén ("What We Do in the Shadows") as Dr. "The studio kind of allowed me to run free in my creativity, and unbeknownst to them and to me, I guess what they were able to see as the promise of how we picture Palmera City, how we really wanted the suit to be, and how in the bigger realm of this cultural side is the impact that this can have culturally," Soto continued. "But also in the superhero genre as just so to try something different, with the hopes that people will see it as this, for the hope that people can see it as what it is, it's very, a lot of love, a lot of heart. And it doesn't really have to be with saving the planet from this fake invasion, but it's actually something that can relate to, which, for some of us, is bigger than life.

10 Best DC Comics Starring Blue Beetle (CBR)

From Ted Kord to Jaime Reyes, the multiple versions of Blue Beetle have starred in some incredible DC comic books from the Silver Age to present day.

For one of the most amusing and powerful superhero duos in DC history, readers need to check out Booster Gold: Blue and Gold. The coming-of-age origin story involves Reyes learning about the Scarab after it binds to his spine from Ted Kord and Doctor Fate. Of course, the best Blue Beetle comics include Ted Kord's pal [Booster Gold](https://www.cbr.com/tag/booster-gold/) and the immense superpowers conjured from the Blue Beetle Scarab. Defined by terrific chemistry, witty banter, and a hilarious odd-couple dynamic that provides endless entertainment, the comic fuses sidesplitting humor with head-spinning action, including Booster traveling through time to save his best friend Blue Beetle from sudden death. During DC's New 52, Blue Beetle and the Sacred Scarab were given another compelling comic book character reinvention that comes to a head in the excellent story Metamorphosis. The story also advances the evil motives of The Reach, once again altering Blue Beetle's technological powers. Following the Infinite Crisis, it was time for Jaime Reyes to officially step into the Blue Beetle costume. [Introduced in 1965 via Charlton Comics](https://www.cbr.com/dc-comics-first-alternate-dimensions/), the Blue Beetle Scarab drew its mystical powers from Ra, the Sun God, requiring Garrett to utter the words "Khaji Da" before transforming into Blue Beetle. The comic depicts Reyes' time in El Paso, Texas before he finds Blue Beetle's Sacred Scarab, the suit of armor that would eventually fuse to his spine and grant him incredible superpowers. [Len Wein](https://www.cbr.com/tag/len-wein/) gives a slightly different origin story to the Sacred Blue Beetle Scarab, the most important superpower the character continues to rely on. Often relegated as a B-list hero, Blue Beetle proves his worth in the comic. Acquired by DC in 1983, three different people have donned the Blue Beetle mantle, including Dan Garrett, Ted Kord, and most recently, Jaime Reyes.

'Blue Beetle' Belongs in El Paso, No Matter What DC Brass Thinks (Texas Monthly)

In 2018, like many Latino comic book and sci-fi/fantasy fans, I was thrilled when DC Studios announced a Blue Beetle movie featuring Mexican American.

Too often El Paso is forgotten, relegated to intangible, almost unreachable status until it makes the news as a result of a It’s not the El Paso that my family knows. El Paso is also essential to the comic book and to Reyes. The scarab is also sentient, with a knack for assessing everything as a threat to which the only response is outrageous violence. It’s at El Paso that my wife’s family crossed into the U.S. El Paso as Reyes’s home speaks to the multigenerational immigrant experience in a border town. Although he visited El Paso to get a sense for the city, Soto ultimately chose to conjure a fictional sci-fi landscape in a paradise-like shawl. The West Texas border town is important to my family and to Latino kids across the state. But he is the first with supernatural abilities, which are derived from a technologically advanced alien scarab that attaches itself to the kid. I was eager to see a Texas town featured prominently in a live-action superhero movie—to think of all the young folks across the state who would see themselves in Reyes. In 2018, like many Latino comic book and sci-fi/fantasy fans, I was thrilled when DC Studios announced a Blue Beetle movie featuring Mexican American teenager Jaime Reyes’s iteration of the character.

Who Are the First Two Blue Beetles in the BLUE BEETLE Movie? (Nerdist)

A moment from the Blue Beetle trailer showed the costumes of the two previous Blue Beetles. These two heroes have quite a long comics history.

But he was still the Blue Beetle, and used his gadgets and training (and eventually, his vast wealth from his company) to fight crime. The writers of that book teamed him up [with Booster Gold](https://nerdist.com/article/who-is-dc-comics-character-booster-gold-comic-origins-explained-multiverse-friendship-with-blue-beetle/), another hero with a recently canceled series. [the multiversal event Crisis on Infinite Earths](https://nerdist.com/article/crisis-on-infinite-earths-history-legacy/), Ted Kord became part of the main DC Universe. Eventually, comics publisher Fox went out of business, and for a long time, that was the end of the Dan Garret Blue Beetle. His solo series only ran for five issues in 1967, but in the ‘80s, DC Comics bought publisher Chartlon Comics’ characters, and Ted had a whole new life. This Blue Beetle was Ted Kord, a student of Dan Garrett’s. [the new Blue Beetle trailer](https://nerdist.com/article/blue-beetle-first-trailer-dc-comics-dcu-superhero-movie/) shows he was not the first to wear the mantle. The scarab gave him super powers, and he fought crime for a few years. His girlfriend was a feisty reporter in the Lois Lane tradition. The original Blue Beetle debuted in 1939 from Fox Comics, a mere few months after Batman debuted at DC. The original Beetle was Dan Garret, and there was shockingly little that was unique about Dan. They have a long comics history, with the first Blue Beetle going all the way back to the 1930s.

How the New 'Blue Beetle' Incorporates the Classic DC Hero (The Mary Sue)

While 'Blue Beetle' will focus on the Jaime Reyes iteration of the hero, it will also reference his predecessor, Ted Kord. Here's what we know.

The business Ted created, Kord Industries, will also play a big role in the film, as Victoria is now the CEO of her brother’s business. For reasons unknown, however, the scarab never bonded with Kord as it did with Garrett, and later, Reyes. As seen in the Blue Beetle trailer, Victoria (Susan Sarandon) will be the main villain of the film. In the comics, Ted was the second character to take on the mantle of the Blue Beetle. Meanwhile, a character named Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine) will appear in Blue Beetle Previously, a rumor suggested that Jason Sudeikis would play Ted in the film, but that theory has since been debunked, and there is no evidence of Kord appearing in Blue Beetle.
