It also derailed the possibility of a showdown with fellow Englishman Tyson Fury to crown an undisputed champion in a fight that would have done incredible business as the biggest showdown in English boxing history. Ultimately, Whyte took a mildly-controversial majority decision, though Franklin proved he could hang with one of the better heavyweights in the world. Joshua entered the rematch as an underdog for the first time in his career. Joshua was able to dominate the rematch with Ruiz, winning back his titles in the process, and followed that up with a knockout win over Kubrat Pulev before facing off with former undisputed cruiserweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. in June 2019 and the first sign that the wheels were starting to come off the Joshua wagon. They have seen these classic Joshua finishes many times before and maybe their support would be the extra boost he needed to end the fight early. However, it’s clear there is still plenty to develop when it comes to the relationship between Joshua and his new trainer Derrick James, and maybe pushing for a world title shot in the Summer is a step too far. Clinches aplenty, Franklin looked to keep the fight at close range.

LONDON -- So much of Saturday's fight was about starting a new chapter for former heavyweight unified champion Anthony Joshua.
Joshua ended his in-ring speech by calling out his British counterpart, Fury, with whom he engaged in talks for a fight in December but fell apart. Tonight he also was without the pressure of a world title on the line, a fact he said in the build-up had been a weight off his large shoulders. Joshua's trademark during those hungry years had become his devastating straight right, and at the heaviest weight of his career (255.4 pounds) it was expected he would look to inflict damage on Saturday. Even his promoter, Eddie Hearn, admitted Joshua was "solid but not spectacular." This fight against Jermaine Franklin, therefore, was about resurrection -- a chance to rebuild his image and, more importantly, get back in the win column. This arena was where he made his pro debut and the stage when he won his first world title.
Anthony Joshua was forced to go 12 rounds against the 29-year-old American before winning a unanimous points decision at the O2 Arena.
A more likely path for Joshua would be to next face Whyte, whom he has beaten before, and to build towards a far more difficult defining test much later in the year. Fighting broke out again briefly after the final bell, before they were separated, in a sign that Joshua harboured some frustration at his failure to close the show in clinical style. Three big right hands from Joshua hurt Franklin in blurring succession and it looked as if he was readying himself for a concussive finish. He had won the round but Joshua’s nose began to bleed and needed a little attention from his corner. But the American looked less comfortable when Joshua nailed him with a heavy right hand and then, later in the round, went to the body with thudding blows. Anthony Joshua won his first fight in more than two years with a comprehensive points victory over a brave and resilient Jermaine Franklin.

Anthony Joshua didn't exactly dominate, but he got the job done against Jermaine Franklin.
Hatton (11-0, 4 KO) is starting to look a little stronger physically, has added some muscle, and the shot was hard and well-placed. Like his brothers, Galal isn’t afraid to get hit, and Calleros (36-11-1, 19 KO) landed some body shots here, but they didn’t seem to bother the 30-year-old Olympic gold medalist, and also he didn’t react big to anything Calleros did, he just kept up his plan and picked his opponent apart. You’ll go down a result and see me not caring so much about the next stoppage, which got a little criticism, so when you get there, think back to this paragraph and consider how bad I think Howard Foster’s stoppage was here. To give Franklin (21-2, 14 KO) his credit, he was not easily discouraged and he never gave up on trying to win, he just didn’t have the tools to beat this version of Joshua, who was fixated early on not making mistakes. Joshua (25-3, 22 KO) was cautious for a lot of the fight, and certainly clinched a fair amount, bringing to mind some of the less intriguing nights of Wladimir Klitschko’s long reign atop the division. Bad Left Hook unofficially scored the bout 118-110 for Joshua.

"It’s all respect, but at the same time it’s a fight. "It would be ideal [to have a tune-up fight in between], after that long layoff to get active. "With [Wladimir] Klitschko, we went in for the kill in round five, and the only reason he managed to survive until the 11th was because I gassed. You’ll see so many fighters after me go through that process of throwing the kitchen sink at fighters not ready [to go down], whose will is on a sky-high and they just don’t want to give up. Even after a fight that they won — look at what happened to Tyson Fury after he beat Klitschko. But it was 12 rounds and he managed to see the final bell. Then we fast forward to the Pulev fight, for example, I was so close to taking him out that I probably threw 200 punches in a round trying to take him out. "If I see a wounded animal, I’m going in for the kill. While it may have underwhelmed in comparison to the early days of his career, in which he racked up seven KOs in this building, Joshua completely controlled proceedings on a night when his career was on the line. "Deep, deep, deep down, I’m not happy, because the ultimate goal is a knockout. He won 10 of the 12 rounds and never looked in real danger of being caught. Franklin, who was extremely unfortunate to lose by MD to Whyte four months ago, was a game and resilient opponent.

By Jake Tiernan: Barry Hearn of Matchroom wants Anthony Joshua to take "two or three" warm-up fights to keep learning & improving this year before he.
Definitely,” said Barry when asked if it were up to him would want Joshua to take two or three warm-up fights before facing Fury for the big payday. “I think AJ just tapped him on the back of the head. Is it time to take the money? He [Joshua] has to decide whether he wants to go for the big payday or build and learn for longer, in which case he needs two or three more warm-up fights. You can make a lot of excuses, but it was a step in the right direction, but it was a step in a long journey. Matchroom Boxing boss Eddie Hearn won’t be able to peddle the Joshua vs.
The talk was fast and Furyous. The reality is likely to be pragmatic acceptance that AJ needs further rehab following the mind-numbing loss of his world ...
Tickets were slow to sell for his return to the arena he is wont to call his Lion’s Den. It is not proving easy to recreate the AJ Aura. When he did unleash the big right which had knocked out all his opponents before he started losing, he declined to risk following up for the kill. Feel for a fallen giant trying to re-find his feet. Wasn’t it unwise that instead of remembering that one-punch accidents happen at heavyweight he tried to take on the hi-tech Olxsandr Usyk at pure boxing? For the fundamental reason that Joshua could not afford to lose. That would almost certainly wipe out any prospect of the Fury fight. But I would have to save all my energy for the fight. Joshua and coach James called it Back To Basics. Even as the conversation turned from Fury first to Dillian Whyte next – oh, don’t doubt it - Joshua was preparing himself for a wind-up onslaught from Fury’s personality. I lived around the traveller community when I was young. The talk was fast and Furyous.
Weekend Review: Anthony Joshua was a winner – and a loser – in his uninspiring victory over Jermaine Franklin on Saturday in London.
… Dogboe didn’t handle his post-fight interview well, arguing in so many words that he was robbed and demanding a rematch. … Robeisy Ramirez (12-1, 7 KOs) climbed all the way back from his disastrous loss in his pro debut, outclassing and easily outpointing former 122-pound beltholder Isaac Dogboe (24-3, 15 KOs) to win a vacant 126-pound title Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. And make no mistake: Joshua is a fine boxer, as he demonstrated in his second fight with Usyk. Then the participants can put on a show and make money without taking risks inherent in genuine fights. Why not take part in exhibitions if Jones wants to stay in the game, as he did with Mike Tyson in 2020? The fight might look a lot like Fury’s meeting with the 39-year-old Klitschko, who has a similar style to Joshua. hurt him in the third round and stopped him in the seventh in an unforgettable 2019 upset. The current version spent as much time holding his frustrated opponent as punching him late in the fight, when Franklin was particularly vulnerable to a knockout. He was back in the win column after three long years and had taken a significant step in the right direction following crippling back-to-back losses against Oleksander Usyk. The victory could lead directly to a showdown against countryman and titleholder Tyson Fury. Joshua controlled the fight from the outset with his power jab and plenty of hard, accurate right hands. Thus, no one was surprised when the official scores were announced: 118-111, 117-111 and 117-111, which was music to the ears of those close to Joshua.
These calls came not just from the media and contemporary fighters, but from his own promoter, Eddie Hearn, who predicted an “explosive knockout” and hinted ...
Joshua is indeed correct that he had a tricky, defensively sound operator in front of him on Saturday, one who was never in imminent danger, and one who was specifically hoping for a gaping opening to land a home run counter shot. Even the most spartan and remote training setups will give way to press obligations upon a fight’s announcement and the week of its occurrence. He didn’t live up to them this time, and it won’t inspire confidence in too many observers. There, rather than being one of the continent’s biggest sporting stars who is hounded everywhere he goes, he can likely walk through the HEB gathering his groceries unnoticed, except for people who suspect he might be a new addition to the Dallas Cowboys they aren’t yet familiar with. “I wanted to be in the position where you can build up so much that you don't have to do so much. That vulnerability will always exist in the eyes of observers when it comes to a fighter they have seen hurt and stopped in the past. “It's a situation you can find yourself in where you land one shot, and the fighter's looking like they're ready to go so you rush in for another shot, and they're just not there for the taking yet. Therein lies the debate that will continue regarding Joshua all the way until he steps into the ring for the next time. I was so close to taking this guy out, I probably threw about 200 punches in a round trying to take this guy out and he survived, he's a tough guy. He was able to control almost every round without incident, meaning he was never in any danger in the bout, but also never seemed to have Franklin in peril either. If a fighter was there for the taking, believe me, if I see a wounded animal, I'm going to go in for the kill. These calls came not just from the media and contemporary fighters, but from his own promoter, Eddie Hearn, who predicted an “explosive knockout” and hinted that one could come early in the bout as well.
ANTHONY JOSHUA was straight on the rest and recovery after celebrating his win over Jermaine Franklin.AJ was taken the distance in victory, his first.

Anthony Joshua wins by decision in his comeback fight against Jermaine Franklin. The Brit took the American to the 12th round and won an easy fight.
This fight could be the start of a Joshua vs Fury deal. What a nice left jab to the face of Wilson. He has to understand that he has to keep his stamina till the end. The corner told their guy to use the right a bit more and he did just that. And two nice crosses by Coffie to the face of Wardley AJ with the jabs to the face of Franklin. And Joshua keeps using is jabs and height to win by the minimum. Wardley takes Coffie to the ropes and lands a multitud of combinations! Franklin is tired and the spirit is gone. Joshua with the jabs taking away at the American. The American wants to go at the British. Joshua can keep doing what he is doing, Jab and Jab and Franklin can’t reach.
Promoter Eddie Hearn says Anthony Joshua will be moving on for a "big fight in the summer" after his decisive twelve-round unanimous decision victory over.
He was awkward and he tried to survive, Franklin, as well in the second half of the fight. “I would have liked to have seen a little more punch output from him, but he boxed nicely. I would like to see him more offensive, and you’ll see that against a bigger guy. He won the fight comfortably, and Franklin is a decent operator. I thought he finished the fight really well and left a little bit of energy in the ring, a little bit of frustration, you know? Eddie Hearn: “It was a very tactical fight.
Anthony Joshua returns to the ring today hoping to get his career back on track with a victory over the American Jermaine Franklin in London.
But Franklin held his own against Whyte, the former WBC interim heavyweight champion, and was perhaps unfortunate to lose the contest, with two judges scoring it 116-112 in the Brit’s favour, with it level on the third card. It is a massive night for 33-year-old Joshua. In the United Kingdom the fight will be shown live on American streaming platform DAZN. That led him to Jermaine Franklin — and Joshua’s first bout without at least one world title on the line in almost seven years. “No I haven't seen them yet,” he said on Friday when asked about his family. •3h ago I just follow the process.” “I know I’ve got the possibility of doing it. And, prior to this contest, he had only fought twice in the heavyweight division. It's been a while since we've seen an early AJ stoppage but I think you'll see one.” I think this could be his last fight. Joshua and Franklin are expected to make their ring walks at 10.41pm BST, 5.41pm ET, 2.41pm PT.
