Tesla delivered 422,875 vehicles for the first three months of this year, up 4% from the previous quarter. The basic Model Y that used to sell for $65,990 now costs $54,990. In January, Chief Executive Elon Musk said Tesla could achieve 2 million vehicle deliveries this year, up 52% from last year.

Tesla's first-quarter vehicle sales rose 36% after the company cut prices twice in a bid to stimulate demand.

A Model S has a starting price of $89,990, while the X starts at $99,990. safety regulators, who have opened multiple investigations and forced a recall of the company's “Full Self-Driving” software for unsafe behavior. Some versions of the top-selling Model Y small SUV saw price trims of nearly 20%, and the base price of the Model 3 small car was dropped by 6%. “The limiting factor is their ability to pay for a Tesla,” he said. Others suggested the company was taking advantage of its higher profit margins in a bid to pull market share from upstart companies and legacy automakers that are starting to sell more EVs. But the increase fell short of analyst estimates of 432,000 for the quarter, according to FactSet.

(They closed at $123.18 on December 30th, the last day of trading in 2022.) Estimates included in the FactSet analysis ranged from 410,000 to 451,000 deliveries expected. [Tesla](/quotes/TSLA/) now sells four models which are produced at two vehicle assembly plants in the US, one in Shanghai and another outside of Berlin. The company also produces a heavy-duty truck, the Semi, at its battery plant in Sparks, Nevada. The company reported deliveries of 10,695 of its higher-priced Model S and X vehicles, about 2% of deliveries in the quarter. Deliveries are the closest approximation of sales disclosed by Tesla and are not broken out by individual model or region.

Tesla’s deliveries in the quarter were dominated by the Model Y and 3, which accounted for 97% of its quarterly total. sales of electric vehicles grabbed about 6% of the market last year, a record share, and likely topped that level in the first quarter owing to the reasonably generous tax credit. New rules for the incentive—including a requirement that key battery materials and battery components like anodes and cathodes come from within North America or designated trading partners—will be tough for any EV maker to meet in the near term as China remains the top global supplier. Tesla shaved thousands of dollars off the base price of its vehicle lineup months ago, spurred by tougher competition from competitors in China and to ensure that its top-selling Model Y crossover and Model 3 sedan were cheap enough to qualify for a U.S. “Clearly, since the Model Y/3 price cuts were implemented early this year demand has been robust during the course of 1Q led by the key China region, which should enable Tesla to at least hit the ~420k bogey for the quarter with possible upside,” Dan Ives, an equity analyst for Wedbush Securities, said in a research note last week. At that point, Tesla vehicles may, at best, qualify for only a portion of the credit.
