F2 Sprint Race Results: Australia (FormulaNerds.com)

FormulaNerds.com — Latest News — MP Motorsport's Dennis Hauger took victory in Melbourne ahead of Jak Crawford and Kush Maini.

Roman Stanek, one of the first drivers to switch, lost control straight out of the pit lane and went into the grass. After all the drivers who chose to put on wet tyres, the highest placed of them was Theo Pourchaire in 12th place. As a result, the Safety Car stayed out until Lap 20. A little over halfway into the race drivers began to hear on the radio that rain was coming. Then, on Lap 14, Australian driver Jack Doohan was tagged by the Van Amersfoort car of Juan Manuel Correa and was left stranded in the middle of the track. Polesitter Dennis Hauger had a good start, but faced a tough challenge from fellow Red Bull junior Jak Crawford for the remainder of the first lap.

F2: Hauger wins tricky sprint race in Australia; Colapinto got it in F3 (FormulaRapida.net)

Dennis Hauger had the win in sprint F2 race in Australia in tricky end, as Franco Colapinto got the victory in F3.

Back to racing on Lap 11 and the leader chose to go at the penultimate corner. Minì took advantage to sneak into fifth ahead of the Swede just as a fourth and final Safety Car came out. A third Safety Car was deployed after Tommy Smith ran wide at the final corner and damaged his Van Amersfoort Racing car. Plenty behind took advantage as the Hitech fell out of the top 10 in the following corners on Lap 13. A Safety Car brought a temporary reprieve at the end of Lap 1. Franco Colapinto was brave in battle against Collet down the back straight, seizing third from the Van Amersfoort Racing man into the fast Turn 9 and 10 chicane. The #16 Hitech Pulse-Eight driver even forced a nose down the inside of Oliver Goethe at Turn 1, but the slightest of contact on the run into Turn 3 gave the Trident man a puncture. The re-start was good for Hauger to win the sprint F2 race from Crawford and Maini, who held off Leclerc. There was contact between Maloney and DAMS’ Ayumu Iwasa on the opening lap but they managed to hang on. A pre-race downpour caught out the likes of Campos pair of Ralph Boschung & Kush Maini and Carlin’s Enzo Fittipaldi on the lap to the grid. The Monegasque got third from it but the Indian came back and retook the place. The reverse grid pole-sitter Dennis Hauger made a good start in his MP Motorsport start to lead Hitech GP’s Jak Crawford and Campos’ Maini.

Bearman avenged his team mate Frederik Vesti’s early overtake to reclaim seventh on the final lap. Jak Crawford put Hauger under pressure to turn a front row start into his maiden points and podium finish in second. The Red Bull junior held on to the lead from reverse grid pole and didn’t relinquish it despite some late drizzle causing drama.

Dennis Hauger survived a late-race shower and safety car restart to take a lights-to-flag victory in the Formula 2 sprint race in Melbourne.

Ret With the shower now having passed, the wet tyre-shod runners were left stranded, Pourchaire running off the circuit as he fought to hang on. On lap 14, Doohan, caught in a midfield scrap with Trident’s Roman Stanek and the Van Amersfoort Racing duo of Correa and Richard Verschoor, was tipped into a spin at Turn 3 by the American. A spin from Virtuosi’s Jack Doohan after contact with Juan Manuel Correa brought out the safety car with eight laps remaining just as rain started to fall over the Albert Park circuit.

The session was halted five minutes in due to the heavy rain, with Oliver Bearman spinning sideways into the barrier between Turns 8 and 9. Having led at the halfway mark, Iwasa found his way back in front with a 1m 45.118s as Martins slid into the wall on the exit of Turn 5, concluding the session with over two minutes left on the clock. F2: Iwasa wins incident-filled Australia feature race; Bortoleto in F3 (FormulaRapida.net)

Ayumu Iwasa held his calm to win an incident-filled feature F2 race in Australia, as Gabriel Bortoleto does so in F3.

Contact on the final lap between Dino Beganovic and Caio Collet left them both with damage three corners from home, but the PREMA driver was able to take P8 ahead of a resurgent Martí in ninth. Unfortunately for the Swiss, Bortoleto managed the gap to the end to take the victory. The Spaniard went from 30th to 21st on the first lap alone, and he was battling Campos Racing teammate Mansell for 12th. Saucy began to close the gap to Bortoleto ahead with a fastest lap on Lap 17 and he was within half a second with three laps to go. But with the penalty to Hadjar, it helped Hadjar, Maini and Stanek in Top 10. The Van Amersfoort Racing man was handed a 10-second time penalty for the incident. Iwasa staight out of trouble from start to finish and wins the race. The MP Motorsport driver made brief contact with the Briton completing the move and sustained a puncture. Before anything more could happen, Nissany ran on the grass to have a spin and hit the wall to retire. There was another moment on the gravel for Bearman outside the Top 10 but caught well. It resulted in a safety car period where the pit stop saw incident between Hadjar and Bearman when the Frenchman was released. There was contact between Trident’s Clement Novalak and Van Amersfoort’s Juan Manuel Correa which forced Correa into the pits with a puncture and front wing damage.

F2: Iwasa leads the championship after a dramatic feature race in ... (FormulaNerds.com)

Roy Nissany hit the wall and caused his race to end with only 7 laps remaining. This caused even more problems for him as when he came out of the pits on the 6th lap he was a lap behind and had a lot of catching up to do. Theo Pourchaire came in second and Arthur Leclerc got his first podium finish after putting on a spectacular race. As Doohan continued to make his way up the pack, he went around the back of the Red Bull of Crawford. However, he came in fourth as Leclerc fought him off until the final turn. Victor Martins locked up after the safety car ended and it hit 3rd place runner Dennis Hauger. Crawford ended up not having enough space and it ultimately led to him to collide with the wall. This caused him to lose those positions he gained and dropped back down to 17th. Isack Hadjar set the fastest lap on the fourth lap and started gaining on the three in front of them. But that was not all as after race control looked at the incident between Hadjar and Bearman they deemed that he would receive another 5-second penalty. Jack Doohan who is starting down in 15th will be hoping to make an impression on the crowd in his first home Grand Prix After a disappointing weekend for both ART drivers in Jeddah, they will be looking to gain back the points they lost and hopefully gain an advantage in the Constructors and Championship board.

F2: Iwasa seals Melbourne Feature Race victory to command ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

Ayumu Iwasa put in a measured performance from pole to take his fourth Formula 2 win and assume the lead of the championship for the first time.

Iwasa now leads the drivers’ championship on 58 points, eight points ahead of Theo Pourchaire, whilst DAMS’ 1-3 finish gives them the lead of the teams’ standings on 91. With four laps to go, Martins and Hauger were knocked out of the fight for the final podium spot. Assuming the lead when Iwasa pitted, Vesti waited until Lap 26 to make his stop behind a second Safety Car after Roy Nissany spun into the barriers ahead of Turn 13. Vesti made swift work of Zane Maloney for fourth ahead of Daruvala, Verschoor, Doohan, Maini and Stanek, who secured his first F2 points for Trident. Theo Pourchaire kept in touch but had to settle for second and Ferrari junior Arthur Leclerc scored his maiden F2 podium from seventh. After starting P15, home hero Jack Doohan attempted to get into the points, going deep across the kerb trying to pass Jak Crawford.
