"We are feeling just how deep our connection is especially in these times," Steinmeier said in his speech at the banquet. King Charles avoids mention of Brexit in speech to German parliament (The Guardian)

Monarch says he wants to 'renew special bond of friendship' between countries, in speech delivered in English and German.

At a gala dinner at Bellevue Palace on Wednesday night, the German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, described the king’s decision to visit Germany before his coronation as not just a great personal statement but a “strong European gesture”. In Brandenburg state he was due to meet soldiers from the German-British Amphibious Engineer Battalion 130 and visit Brodowin, an eco-village where farmers use homeopathic remedies to work their land and treat their livestock. For some members of Germany’s parliament, the pomp and circumstance was too much. It might have helped if an aide had pointed out that there is no “sh” sound in “Bundestag”. The monarch’s speech was the first given to Germany’s federal parliament by a non-elected head of state. In his 25-minute speech, he declined to mention Brexit or the EU.

King Charles needn't sell off the crown jewels in atonement for ... (The Guardian)

Money can only ever begin to make amends, says activist and former broadcaster Barbara Blake-Hannah.

For all the millions her family made from slavery, why all of a sudden this change of heart? Financial reparations are not the only way for the descendants of enslavers to make amends. That way King Charles won’t have to sell off the crown jewels, though he may have to convert some of the palaces into student dormitories. “For the first time we have one of the former colonizing European powers giving a full-fledged apology. And the Trevelyans are only one of many rich British families whose wealth was based in the slave trade. This opens the floodgates for the prospect of reparation payouts from the governments of former colonizing European nations. The conversation about reparations in Jamaica is continuous, and the strength of public opinion rises and falls as day-to-day news events colour what is often an angry discussion. [The Dutch king](https://www.voanews.com/a/dutch-king-says-slavery-apology-start-of-long-journey-/6891521.html) recently welcomed his prime minister’s apology for [the Netherlands’ role](https://www.government.nl/latest/news/2022/12/19/government-apologises-for-the-netherlands-role-in-the-history-of-slavery) in 250 years of slavery – even if that carefully avoided a direct apology from his throne and the inevitable repercussions. Jamaicans broadly welcome the new reality of international discussions on the topic of slavery: who took part, who benefited and who should pay. The Guardian’s move is as admirable as Trevelyan’s, but has much greater impact and potential for positive imitation by the large organisations, businesses and social institutions that are Britain’s foundations. In February, the former BBC journalist Laura Trevelyan travelled to Grenada [to apologise for her family](https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/mar/25/slaves-trade-amends-grenada-laura-trevelyan) having owned 1,000 enslaved Africans there, and donate £100,000 to establish education projects on the island. [publish its thorough investigation](https://www.theguardian.com/news/commentisfree/2023/mar/28/how-our-founders-links-to-slavery-change-the-guardian-today) into the publication’s beginnings in, and connections with, slavery.

King Charles III to speak to German parliament, meet Scholz (ABC News)

Britain's King Charles III is preparing to become the first monarch to speak before Germany's parliament, the Bundestag.

Still, Charlesl had enough time to try a special, crown-shaped cake made by the farm's pastry chef in his honor. Pomp and royal glamour aside, the three-day visit has a decidedly political purpose. Crowds of well-wishers and Germany's head of state, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, greeted the couple at the capital’s iconic Brandenburg Gate. Charles and Camilla, the queen consort, will visit Hamburg on Friday to pay respects at a memorial to the Kindertransporte, or children's transports, which saw more than 10,000 Jewish children rescued from Nazi Germany 85 years ago. Charles briefly touched on the grim history of Nazism and WWII. The restoration in the 1990s of the former Reichstag building, that was heavily damaged during World War II, was capped with a glass cupola designed by British architect Norman Foster intended as a symbol of transparency and accountability.
