Matt Wallace Secures Maiden PGA Tour Title At Corales Puntacana Championship - Wallace carded a final round 66 to claim his first PGA Tour title.

To date, his best round came in 2016, where he shot a six-under-par 66 having been seven-under through nine holes. It was set to be a thrilling final round and, early doors, it was Ricky Barnes who amazingly took the lead, with the American three-under-par through his first six holes. Playing the last, it was good news, for Wallace, as Hojgaard couldn't make the crucial birdie he needed to force a playoff. Matt joined Golf Monthly in February 2021 covering weekend news, before also transitioning to equipment and testing. He currently plays at Witney Lakes in Oxfordshire and his favourite player is Rory McIlroy, despite nearly being struck by his second shot at the 17th during the 2015 BMW PGA Championship. In an enthralling final day, it was Matt Wallace who came out on top, with the Englishman producing a classy finish to pick up his first PGA Tour title and a first win since the 2018 Made in Denmark on the DP World Tour.

CT: McIlroy misses the green left off the tee on the short par-4, but he plays a mesmerizing pitch that uses the slope to the right of the green and rolls to within 6 feet of the cup. CT: McIlroy makes easy work of the short par-4 fifth; his tee shot finds an ideal position just short of the green, and he chips to 3 feet for a conceded birdie. CT: McIlroy plays a fade off the tee and over-cuts it, but he has a clear angle to the green on his approach and takes advantage with a mid-iron from 187 yards to 13 feet. CT: Young chooses to lay up off the tee on the short par-4 13th; McIlroy plays his tee shot safely to the right of the putting surface. Young hits his tee shot just short of the green at the par-4 18th, chips to 8 feet and drains the birdie. CT: Burns plays a pristine iron to 10 feet at the par-3 fourth, hole-high, taking the clear advantage as Scheffler plays to the middle of the green, 30 feet out. CT: Burns takes an unplayable after an errant drive on the par-4 fifth; he plays his third shot to 14 feet and the par try catches a piece of the hole but does not drop. Burns cannot convert the birdie to win the match, and Scheffler's birdie to send the match to extra holes is center-cut. CT: Burns tugs his tee shot left on the par-3 seventh, but he shows off his short game with a crafty up-and-down, draining a 10-foot par to tie the hole as Scheffler cannot get his 19-foot birdie to drop. CT: Scheffler plays his second to the front of the green on the par-5 12th, leaving a cross-country eagle try, as Burns finds a greenside bunker with his second shot, playing from there to 22 feet. CT: A sudden reversal of fortune, as Burns hits a crisp approach from a fairway bunker to 15 feet, as Scheffler's approach from the right-center of the fairway sails over the green. Burns has a reasonably clear line to the green and executes a smart shot to the center of the green, leaving a 27-foot birdie try.

A four-time winner on the DP World Tour, including three victories in 2018, Wallace triumphed in his 80th PGA Tour start and collected $684,000, his biggest payday on tour. I had a lot of chances on the back nine today to put some pressure on him, so I've got a feeling I'm really disappointed right now," said Hojgaard, who was making just his eighth PGA Tour start. Hojgaard, 22, needed to birdie the difficult 18th hole to forge a tie with Wallace, but he missed a 25-footer and shot 68. That let him break from a tight pack of contenders and win for the first time on the PGA Tour. I've got Sam here with me, my French caddie, the only Frenchman to win on the PGA Tour, so I'm so happy for him and I thank him a lot.

AUSTIN, Texas – Sam Burns came into the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play without much fanfare. That's kind of his thing.

Amazingly, this was Burns’ tournament debut, and while the Match Play has historically taken some time for players to figure out – Geoff Ogilvy in 2006 was last to win it in his first try – Burns took to it quickly. Burns fought back and took a 1-up lead to the 18th hole, but Scheffler birdied it to force a playoff. “I think after 10 holes this morning, my caddie, Travis, kind of gave me a good kick in the butt and said, ‘Come on man, let's go, you got this.’ And I really needed it at the time. But Burns found another gear, making eight birdies in a stretch of 10 holes to close out the victory. He was not featured in the Netflix docuseries “Full Swing” and won’t be in the second season, either. He cited a driver change – his old one was deemed non-conforming – and his work with coach Pullin for his turnaround.

If the tour’s 2024 schedule is released, as expected, without a match play event, I’ve got a hot new slogan ready. Early on Sunday in his semifinal match versus Cameron Young, Rory McIlroy played a chip shot away from the hole and off the green, rolling the ball high up a mound beside the putting surface, allowing it to trundle slowly and wonderfully back onto the green and finish near the hole. That ratio isn’t exactly the best way to showcase the nearly superhuman talent of the world’s best golfers, but it is how to win a four-day tournament where every shot counts. In some ways, match play produces one of the main goals being touted by those who support the controversial proposal to roll back the golf ball: Variety and creativity of shots. This past week’s World Golf Championship Dell Match Play was the last of its kind for the foreseeable future. Article content

It was carnage for our picks and best bets in Austin for the Match Play, which can happen. Now it’s time for the trip to TPC San Antonio and, though the field is headlined weakly by Tyrrell Hatton, Rickie Fowler, Corey Conners, Hideki Matsuyama and so on, it’s a reprieve for our PGA Tour expert picks.

Power Rankings: Valero Texas Open - PGA TOUR (pgatour.com)

While last week's World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play most resembles the PGA TOUR's method of March Madness, that tournament is condensed ...

This tournament also is the last open among individual competitions until the Mexico Open at Vidanta in four weeks, but top 10s would be eligible for the RBC Heritage in two weeks, pending space. The Oaks Course is stingy off the tee and on approach, and especially in the winds of the Texas Hill Country, so confidence with the longest clubs is a prerequisite. Only 11 in the field as of Monday afternoon are In the context of ease, and even though it’s a stock par 72, TPC San Antonio positions closer to Bay Hill, than it does any shootout. The coronations present a natural segue into this week’s Valero Texas Open that has yielded four breakthroughs in its last five editions. With six tournaments covering just four weeks, the extended stretch across March is a different kind of delirium, and this month has been no exception.

PGA Tour outlines eligibility, FexExCup points for designated events ... (Golf Channel)

In a four-page memo sent to players Monday, the PGA Tour outlined the adjustments to eligibility starting next year.

Officials plan to “minimize isolated weeks” between full-field events and designated events, like this year’s Honda Classic, which was wedged between the Genesis Invitational and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and use those “swings” to create avenues for players to play their way into the bigger tournaments via mini points lists. Current year tournament winners and any player inside the top 30 in the world ranking, provided they are a Tour member, will also qualify for the designated events, which will have fields of 70 to 80 players and feature no cut. Starting next year, there will be 16 designated events, including the four major championships, The Players Championship, three FedExCup playoff events and eight other tournaments that have not yet been announced.

PGA Tour Needs to Keep Match Play Event (Woodward Sports Network)

The Dell Technologies Match Play event was part of the World Golf Championship series. With the WGC's going away, the match play event will be no more. The PGA ...

Adding another typical stroke play event is just a waste of time. Getting the top men and women golfers in the world on the same course for a weekend is a no brainer concept. There is no other event on tour that is a match play format. It’s been a staple on the DP World Tour. But adding in that off-beat type of event a few times a year is good and keeps things interesting. You must find a course that is willing to host it. You have to find an event for this new one to replace. They’re finally adding a mixed event for the PGA and LPGA next year. The Dell Technologies Match Play event was part of the World Golf Championship series. And you can sprinkle in the nugget that the two are close friends. It’s the only event where we get to see superstars battle it out one-on-one, loser goes home. another match play event!

Matt Wallace uses late birdie run to win 1st PGA Tour title (ESPN)

Matt Wallace ran off four straight birdies down the stretch on the Corales course at Puntacana and closed with two solid pars for a 6-under 66 and his first ...

His putt narrowly missed, and he had to settle for being the runner-up. But he is set for the PGA Championship and the Sentry Tournament of Champions next year at Kapalua. "I realized at the Players Championship that out of the 145 shots I hit to miss the cut by 1, two of those I spoke to myself nicely. The putt just missed on the low side, giving the Dane a 68. Wallace can run on the hot side and often berates himself. There was nothing but positive vibes, especially during the birdie stretch that began at the 13th hole.
