Men's Results and Highlights from a Rainy Gent-Wevelgem (Bicycling)

Christophe Laporte and Wout van Aert launched a brilliant attack on the key climb and rode away from the peloton during a wet and dreary Gent-Wevelgem.

Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Dstny), Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) tried to follow, but van Aert’s pace was too much. Next week is another race van Aert and Jumbo-Visma has circled on its calendar: the Tour of Flanders. [E3 Saxo](https://www.bicycling.com/racing/a43417978/wout-wins-e3-saxo/), Wout van Aert returned to the Belgian roads on Sunday and turned in another brilliant display alongside his teammate Christophe Laporte.

"But there was nobody on my wheel and I thought 'let's try a bit'." We took a closer look at the Kemmelberg Marlen Reusser is the first Swiss woman to win Gent-Wevelgem, and only the second Swiss rider - man or woman - to win in Wevelgem. Especially my arms, I mean I cannot even dress myself, I'm so done." And there's the throw to the line for second. A minute and a half for Reusser - this is a gap she could definitely defend to the finish. A couple of minutes until the chasers get to the finish. That said, riders are using the brief respite of the flat to try to come back to the front of this race. She will have been hoping someone could join her. This will all take energy and power out of the legs of a lot of riders. Maybe in these conditions, a lot of riders are happier to shelter in the bunch that expose themselves to the elements. It may have been a relatively quiet start to the race, but battling the conditions and fighting for position in the bunch will already be taking it out of a lot of riders.

GENT-WEVELGEM'23: Laporte/Van Aert Dominant Double ... (PezCycling News)

With 50 kilometres to go, Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte rode away and the win was theirs to share. Laporte took the win.

At the line it was Laporte who crossed the line first. With the cold, it was also a special feeling. We went for it with two and gave everything to the finish line. The group of counter-attackers consisted of nine riders, Mads Pedersen was the last to make the group. In the last kilometre they were joined by Mads Pedersen, but it was Vanmarcke who won the sprint for third place. At this point it was a question of who would take, be given, the victory. At the foot of the Kemmelberg, the difference had dropped to less than 1:30. There was no change on the climb itself, but just after the top a group managed to break free. There was still a long way to go to the final, which would start with the Scherpenberg at less than 100 kilometres from the finish. With a lead of 2 minutes with 10 kilometres to go, the win was theirs to share. Laporte took the win, arm in arm with Van Aert. With 50 kilometres to go, Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte rode away from what was left of the decimated peloton.

Then I got to the front a bit too early and had to wait with my sprint. The control was lost for a while because of all the bike changes and crashes, but our riders showed great things after all the hectic moments. Then the tempo dropped for a while and some teammates were able to return. Unfortunately, Henderson and Beekhuis were then involved in a crash. Anna Henderson and Teuntje Beekhuis were able to stay near the front during the first passage of the Kemmelberg and rode up with the best. Team Jumbo-Visma was ready to play an important role in the final, until an array of crashes disrupted the original plans.

Severe weather and a savage two-man attack made Gent-Wevelgem a unique spectacle of the Spring Classics.

On the road, it had been a day of suffering, pain, disappointment, and - for that Jumbo-Visma duo - jubilation. He has a modern languages degree from Durham University and has been able to put it to some use in what is a multi-lingual sport, with a particular focus on French and Spanish-speaking riders. From start to finish, it came and it came and it came. Gore-Tex was ground down and forced to give way, and so was nearly half the field. On Sunday, it was estimated that for each square metre of West Flanders, there fell up to 20 litres of rain.

The crash happened at the front of the bunch leaving just a handful of riders unscathed. With four teammates in the group behind to disrupt any chasing the Swiss rider’s gap continued to grow over the top of the climb. Even a wrong turn by Reusser did nothing to dent her advantage which by the finish had grown to 2’42”. Crashes are to be expected on a wet day out on the cobbles, but something was in the rain water on this particular occasion with multiple pile-ups throughout the day. For the women’s race, a novel two and a half hours of live coverage meant that we got to see the sprawling chaos of this edition unfold in real time. The 2023 edition of Gent-Wevelgem was one of those races that, as a fan sitting at home, makes you think ‘I’m glad I’m not doing that’.
