Men's Results and Highlights from a Rainy Gent-Wevelgem (Bicycling)

Christophe Laporte and Wout van Aert launched a brilliant attack on the key climb and rode away from the peloton during a wet and dreary Gent-Wevelgem.

Caleb Ewan (Lotto-Dstny), Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo), and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) tried to follow, but van Aert’s pace was too much. Next week is another race van Aert and Jumbo-Visma has circled on its calendar: the Tour of Flanders. [E3 Saxo](https://www.bicycling.com/racing/a43417978/wout-wins-e3-saxo/), Wout van Aert returned to the Belgian roads on Sunday and turned in another brilliant display alongside his teammate Christophe Laporte.

As it happened: Jumbo-Visma dominant again at Gent-Wevelgem (Cyclingnews.com)

Laporte, Van Aert take a 1-2 after 260km of rainy racing across the cobbles and hills of Flanders.

Then it's back south for the cobbles, the climbs, the Kemmelberg, before going on through Ypres again on to the finish. THe wind wasn't high enough to have a major effect today. Another 30 seconds back to the peloton. Van Avermaet's group is right in the middle. We did everything to go to the finish together. They'll do it again later, before a final ride up the Oussaire side, the longest and toughest road to the top. Daan Hoole (Trek-Segafredo) stops to take a new bike. Still over a minute up to the Jumbo duo. It's over for the breakaway and that attacking group. The Italian couldn't get clear and now Mohorič takes it up on the front. I want to thank Wout for everything. "Wout asked me if I wanted to win.

Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) won Gent-Wevelgem from Wout van Aert after a dominant display from his Dutch super team.

I won on Friday, and my eyes are on the races that are coming. "Then we were quite sure we had the victory. We did everything to go to the finish together. "I've never won a Classic before, and now I'm so proud. And the pair stayed away – holding a near two-minute advantage over the chasing pack into Wevelgem – in an astonishing show of dominance. "Wout asked me if I wanted to win.

GENT-WEVELGEM'23: Laporte/Van Aert Dominant Double ... (PezCycling News)

With 50 kilometres to go, Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte rode away and the win was theirs to share. Laporte took the win.

At the line it was Laporte who crossed the line first. With the cold, it was also a special feeling. We went for it with two and gave everything to the finish line. The group of counter-attackers consisted of nine riders, Mads Pedersen was the last to make the group. In the last kilometre they were joined by Mads Pedersen, but it was Vanmarcke who won the sprint for third place. At this point it was a question of who would take, be given, the victory. At the foot of the Kemmelberg, the difference had dropped to less than 1:30. There was no change on the climb itself, but just after the top a group managed to break free. There was still a long way to go to the final, which would start with the Scherpenberg at less than 100 kilometres from the finish. With a lead of 2 minutes with 10 kilometres to go, the win was theirs to share. Laporte took the win, arm in arm with Van Aert. With 50 kilometres to go, Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte rode away from what was left of the decimated peloton.

Sep Vanmarcke wins chase-group sprint for third in abysmal weather conditions.

With several strong sprinters present in the group, the likes of Vermeersch, Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe), and Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) all giving it a shot. His favourite races are Strade Bianche and the Volta a Portugal, and he rides a Colnago C40. Van Aert was back on the front heading into the final kilometre, pulling Laporte once more before they sat up to celebrate during the closing 500 metres. It was Vanmarcke who had the strongest legs in the sprint despite Pedersen launching first, the Belgian coming through to take his first Classics podium since the 2021 Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. Laporte lost a few metres, but with Van Aert putting himself at the service of his French teammate, he was never in any danger of dropping away. The Frenchman would be caught on that key climb, however, as Jumbo-Visma pair Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte ripped past him to go clear over the top. That gap only kept increasing, even as a larger peloton came together in the chase with Ineos Grenadiers taking to the front. Breakaway hopefuls attempted to move clear from the very start of the race, with Lewis Askey (Groupama-FDJ) among the first group to get a small gap on the peloton. At around 60km to run, the attack group merged with the breakaway, though the move wouldn't last much longer as the peloton closed in. They would continue to chase until they finally bridged the gap after 100km of racing, making it 14 men up front. After 60km of racing, the peloton finally slowed as Van Avermaet's group caught the leaders. Only a few days ago, we talked about the 2022 E3 Saxo Bank Classic, and we said to each other that we should realise it'll probably never happen again.

Swinkels fourth in chaotic edition of Gent-Wevelgem (Team Jumbo-Visma)

Karlijn Swinkels crossed the line in fourth place at the end of a chaotic Gent-Wevelgem. Team Jumbo-Visma was ready to play an important role in the…

Then I got to the front a bit too early and had to wait with my sprint. The control was lost for a while because of all the bike changes and crashes, but our riders showed great things after all the hectic moments. Then the tempo dropped for a while and some teammates were able to return. Unfortunately, Henderson and Beekhuis were then involved in a crash. Anna Henderson and Teuntje Beekhuis were able to stay near the front during the first passage of the Kemmelberg and rode up with the best. Team Jumbo-Visma was ready to play an important role in the final, until an array of crashes disrupted the original plans.
