Or, at the very least, granted a sequel on the social media platform. In 2020, she made her modelling debut for cult Gen Z brand Heaven by Marc Jacobs, where she styled and shot all the photos for the campaign herself. She then panned the camera to her babysitter’s boyfriend, who was petting a dog in the five-storey West Village townhouse that her parents bought in 2012 for $9.85 million (£8m). She’s not just a nepo baby, but a nepo-grandbaby — with legendary Hollywood director Francis Coppola of The Godfather fame as her grandfather. No, it was because she attempted to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland to have dinner with a friend from summer camp — all with her father’s credit card.

Assuming she figures out a way to circumvent her parents’ rules again, I can’t wait to see her sophomore project. “Make a vodka sauce pasta with me because I’m grounded,” the video begins — an intro that could come from any bored teen with access to their parents’ liquor cabinet. She goes on: “Because they don’t want me to be a nepotism kid. It’s a TikTok of Sofia Coppola’s 16-year-old daughter preparing to make pasta à la vodka while grounded for trying to charter a helicopter on her parents’ credit card. When the child of a celebrity makes art, it’s customary to view it with a heavy dose of skepticism, the assumption being that their inherited access to wealth, power, and other creative resources does not necessarily make them a great candidate for insightful commentary on the world.

Sofia Coppola's Daughter's Viral TikTok Was a Cinematic Masterpiece (Jezebel)

Romy Mars took to TikTok to premiere a captivating short film about her experience being grounded. I implore all to watch.

After Romy asks what he thinks of the helicopter fiasco, he generously spins her incorrect pronunciation of the word “fiasco” (she says, “fiasca”) as a political statement on gender roles. It’s women’s history month, so…” she says before concluding the short film by announcing Ari has to go pick up literally all of the ingredients needed to make vodka sauce pasta (except for the onion, which is actually a shallot.) In under 50 seconds, we are taken on a wayward journey of insurrection, influence, gender politics, and helicopters. And before we can get too unsettled by the implications of both what she was about to say and her being unable to distinguish between two very common root vegetables, she segues into a surprise character introduction. Instead, the promise of vodka sauce pasta serves as a vehicle in which we, the audience, are transported into the world of a nepo-baby. First, it provides us with exposition: “Make a vodka sauce pasta with me because I’m grounded because I tried to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland on my dad’s credit card because I wanted to have dinner with my camp friend,” Romy explains in her kitchen. “Here’s why,” she says as she holds up her dad’s (Thomas Mars, lead singer of Phoenix) Grammy Award.

But there are many exceptions, and Mars seems to have the potential to be one of them. As she starts to cook, she shares that she does not know the difference between garlic and onion, and had to look up what they looked like. And while comments on this subject tend toward the negative, the video has been met with a warmer reception, with some saying Mars has the potential to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a great director.

Celebrity offspring TikToks are my favorite social media genre. If you make a video of your mother, Laura Dern, dancing to Doja Cat, that is undeniably ...

Romy is not a recognizable face (though she does look like her mom!) — the Guardian [described](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/jul/02/sofia-coppola-beguiled-i-never-felt-i-had-to-fit-into-the-majority-view-interview) her mother in 2017 as someone who “keeps a determinedly low public profile, insistent that her daughters’ lives go largely uninterrupted by her career and her travels.” Coppola and Thomas Mars are, per her stated intentions, a low-key couple; they rarely appear in tabloids. “This looks like the inner workings of a balls—” (the video cuts off abruptly here). “It’s, like, a feminine form of ‘fiasco.’” Ari! The video cuts to a frame of Romy cheesing at the camera, holding a chef’s knife with the blade dangerously close to her face. But as far as incisive, well-executed slices of the high life go, I might like Romy Mars’s version more. Raising the emotional stakes, Romy describes her babysitter and Ari as “replacement parents.” When Romy asks Ari what he thinks of the “helicopter fiasco,” Ari’s response is so gently digressive it rends the heart. Romy muses that she’ll probably get in trouble because her parents’ “biggest rule” is that she’s “not allowed to have any public social media accounts.” “Here’s why,” she says, holding up what I presume is her father’s Grammy. “Because I tried to charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland on my dad’s credit card because I wanted to have dinner with my camp friend,” she continues, a veritable roller coaster of facts. “Is this an onion?” she asks, holding up a shallot. “Make a vodka sauce pasta with me because I’m grounded,” Romy says at the beginning of the video, her voice sped up so it sounds eerily frantic. When you [dress up as your father, Kanye West](https://www.complex.com/pop-culture/best-of-north-west-tiktok-videos), and lip-synch “Bound 2” with your mom, Kim Kardashian, that is obviously a work of genius.
