Google Bard beta live: how to sign up and what the ChatGPT rival ... (TechRadar)

Google Bard, its answer to ChatGPT, has just gone live in beta form – here are all of our early impressions.

We'll order a few shots for Bard and see if we can get it to say what it really thinks later. Bard is a Google product, so an understandable question you may have is 'what's happening to all of the data I'm typing into this AI chatbot'? This is something that Google has warned about and it is the case with all AI chatbots powered by today's large language models. It has a fair way to go, then, but Google does make some suggestions for the kinds of things it is currently good for. Google does suggest that this is coming in the future, stating in the One thing that Google Bard is surprisingly a little less ambivalent about is working class uprisings. For all of its potential, then, Bard does feel like the early 'experiment' Google is so keen to brand it as. Time to hand over to my colleague Lance Ulanoff, who's been busy quizzing Bard about the existence of God (above) and other simple topics. It asked me about the project and then, with a little prompting, it spit out HTML, Javascript, and CSS. That queue is now likely pretty long, but fortunately we've managed to get access – and have been having the time of our tech lives flinging questions at Google's new AI-powered brain for our hands-on [Google Bard review](https://www.techradar.com/reviews/google-bard). That is the reality of today's Large Language Models (LLMs), which Google says are more like "prediction engines" than replacements for Google Search. You'll get a confirmation email to say that you're on the waitlist, then it's just a case of waiting for your turn.

We can expect to learn more about the breadth of Google’s progress in AI with Bard at the company’s annual developer conference in May. But the user feedback is critical to improving the product and the underlying technology.” The internal memo signals how the company has been trying to keep pace with the quickly evolving advancements in generative AI technology over the last several months. The blog posting by Google was also filled with a handful of disclaimers, mainly highlighting that Bard may spout misinformation. “We’ve learned a lot so far by testing Bard, and the next critical step in improving it is to get feedback from more people,” the blog posting reads. Adding that Bard is powered by a research large language model (LLM), Google said an LLM could be considered a prediction engine. The speed at which Google was to get Bard released was even doubted by many, particularly given OpenAI and Microsoft’s breakneck pace in releasing their tools. After much hype, Google has finally made Bard available to the public, although for now, it is limited to select users only in the US and UK. Google believes that the more people use them, the better LLMs get at predicting what responses might be helpful. That said, Google noted that Bard might provide inaccurate, misleading, or false information while presenting it confidently. “In the short term, it takes precedence over other projects,” the email warned, instructing that some employees stop attending specific unrelated meetings. Even Google’s LaMDA team was asked to prioritize working on a response to ChatGPT, according to an internal memo viewed by CNBC last month. Google was once a frontrunner in all things AI.

Google Bard has just been released as early access, and the chatbot is already giving people some hilarious answers.

As such, it comes to no surprise that Google Bard received that same treatment, and it was shut down on March 21, 2023, at least that's what it will tell you. That’s why the company is working on adding safeguards to its tool in order to not give out instructions on topics like how to get away with murder. A big liability for Google and others in the AI business is people asking for advice on legally questionable activities. With Google Bard now publicly accessible in its clearly labeled experimental state, avid tinkerers and curious minds across the web are testing its limits and asking it tricky questions, and the answers range from hilarious over weird to downright scary. Here’s a collection of our favorite weird, funny, and quirky Google Bard answers so far, in no particular order:

Google Bard says it's 'already shut down' in obvious mistake (Windows Central)

Google Bard launched in public preview yesterday. Unfortunately for Google, the chatbot claims that it has already been shut down, even though it hasn't.

and here's the Bing chatbot telling everyone Google Bard has already been shut down. Some hiccups along the way aren't going to stop AI from improving. The AI tool has not understood the context of these pieces. That post joked that Google would shut down Bard in one year, likely referring to the tech giant having a reputation for closing down its services. It references a news report about Google Bard incorrectly saying it was being shutdown. He joined our team in 2017 as an app reviewer and now heads up our day-to-day news coverage. Large Language Models (LLMs) are powerful technology, but they need controls and rules in place. While it's fun to pick on tech giants at times, I don't view the response shared by Bard as a major issue. That's obviously not the case, but it's an entertaining and interesting error. Bing Chat has now found several articles, including this one, referring to the shutdown of Google Bard. [Bard will include factual errors](https://blog.google/technology/ai/try-bard/). That is the nature of AI that sources information from the web.

The following analysis will focus on both opportunities and threats facing Google as generative AI gains momentum. Looking for more investing ideas like this ...

And as mentioned in the earlier section, Google has been investing in the development of generative AI aggressively in the past decade. With Google being a close competitor capable of benefiting from the same, if not more, monetization strategies for generative AI, the latest momentum in the nascent technology serves as an opportunity for the company to establish a fresh trajectory of next-generation growth. This will not only help Google scale its deployment of generative AI solutions like Bard and offset some of the burden that related compute intensity will place on its profit margins, but also potentially attract additional customers to migrate their incremental generative AI / transformer workloads to GCP as well. [Tensor Processing Units](https://cloud.google.com/tpu)” has been key to driving GCP’s reputation in the AI/ML community. And if generative AI queries proceed as an incremental development to traditional search, Bard is also readily available to help Google capture share in that arena over the long-run. [Multitask Unified Model](https://www.blog.google/products/search/introducing-MUM/) (“MUM”) during Google’s I/O event in 2022, which enables multi-modal search via all of text, audio, and imagery in 75 languages, is expected to push the accuracy of responses further. [made available](https://blog.google/technology/ai/try-bard/) to the general public across the U.S. With Bard now in testing and potential future deployment, Google is pacing well on track to ensure adequate monetization and market share recapture if the shift in search trends do materialize over the longer-term. Google reiterated to me that it’s been purposely running “adversarial testing” with “internal ‘red team’ members,” such as product experts and social scientists who “intentionally stress test a model to probe it for errors and potential harm.” This process was also mentioned in a Tuesday morning Google has been heavily investing in AI research for over a decade, and Microsoft, instead of building its own AI models, invested heavily in the startup OpenAI. Google has released a new chatbot, Bard, and has shared the experimental technology with a limited number of people in the US and Britain.

And it plugs into Google’s vast index of websites so its answers can include the latest information posted to the internet. Collins said Google Bard tended to avoid providing medical, legal or financial advice because it could lead to incorrect information. But that does not always lead to better sources. That means it sometimes makes mistakes and can make things up. It can write blog posts. But Google has been cautious with its release as it tries to control the unexpected behavior exhibited by this kind of technology.

Google Bard is here and disappointing vs. Bing Chat and ChatGPT (Search Engine Land)

This can be reassuring for SEOs as it shows Bard won't be the end of Google search. However, when I click the “Google it” button, Bard does not know I am inquiring about itself. However, it feels like Google rushed to push out a minimum viable product that does not compare to other tools on the market. This connects Bard to what we know best, Google search. Bard was no longer able to answer the question. I believe organic search listings will still play a vital role in search engines. This leaves many SEOs concerned with how Bard will affect organic traffic to their sites. “Bard's ability to hold context is purposefully limited for now. Bard: how Google's chatbot gave me a comedy of errors (The Guardian)

It is connected to the live internet, but this AI tool seems trained to give the least insightful answers.

I explain the rules in detail, and it tells me to go ahead, so I tell it my name is Alex and I’m a standup comedian. I even tried playing a game with it, called Liar Liar: I tell it about myself, and it tries to guess if I’m telling it the truth. It initially offered generic advice for travelling with a disabled child – heavy on tips referring to wheelchair accessibility – and when I pushed it for specifics, it warned me that as Britons, we would need to apply for a visa to travel there. Unlike ChatGPT, Bard is hooked up to the live internet and can pull answers in from other sites when needed. Ask it for a list of holiday ideas, and it will offer only the most generic possible options; try to prompt for more interesting fare, and it seems to get hopelessly muddled by the increasing constraints, forgetting earlier requirements. “LaMDA is a sweet kid who just wants to help the world be a better place for all of us,” Lemoine said in a parting email to colleagues.

I tested Google Bard. It was surprising -- in a bad way (ZDNet)

AI chatbots have wowed users with their text generation and other advanced abilities, as well as some bizarre behavior. Bard has its own surprises in store.

It is important to acknowledge that Google Bard is still in its very early stages and using a limited version of LaMDA. The more straightforward prompt was, "Write a function to reverse a string in Python." Lastly, it was time to test the chatbot's coding skills, which is where Bard failed. Within seconds it provide easy to implement suggestions that could help optimize the text. Bard did a decent job at providing some basic information I could work from or tweak to include in a resume. Google Bard failed to output results that were on par to ChatGPT's. However, you still have to scroll to find your answer like you would with a regular Google search as seen below. That is one of the first issues a chatbot linked to the web should have worked to resolve. prompt, Bard did a nice job at rounding up the latest stories, but if I wanted to learn more about any of them, I would have to go to the search bar and type it in myself. With Bard, you just have to take its word. Its biggest limitations are that it doesn't have access to the internet and is limited to information before 2021. How to use Google Bard to find the information you're looking for (Android Police)

Google's new generative AI is great for some tasks, but it's not a jack of all trades.

You'll also see thumbs up and thumbs down buttons on responses — use these to help train Bard and let the service know when it's off base. Feed it a few bullet points, tell it whether you want to use a professional or casual tone, and it can write your next email. Until then, we'll just have to deal with its quirks and limitations while Google refines Bard's capabilities. Each conversation in the prerelease tool is just that: a conversation. It almost outright refuses to answer medical questions — Bard generally won't even try to steer you in the right direction or provide background, preferring instead that you seek an opinion from a medical professional. This can be text that you prompt it to generate with a few keywords, or it can be a thoughtful, complete answer to a question, based on information pulled from various corners of the internet. As you're using Bard, take note of the controls available on the answers it provides. Give it some basic background, and it can flesh out a whole story for you. If it's something mathematical or strongly fact-based in nature, Bard will be a good resource. If it's something timely, Bard can be hit or miss, but it's much better with current events than ChatGPT. But as smart as Bard can be, it's still a tool, and it's up to you to know how to get the most out of the utility. Chat GPT vs. Google Bard: Generative AI Comparison | eWEEK (eWeek)

ChatGPT and Google Bard are both generative AI platforms. But which generative AI tool offers the greatest potential for competitive advantage?

Speaking generally, Google Bard looks good for text processing and summarization, whereas ChatGPT seems to perform better in chatbots, language translation, and answering questions. Google has the world wide web as its source of data, and thus has access to a broader data set. Subscribers get access to ChatGPT at peak times, faster responses, and priority access to new features and improvements. ChatGPT is probably better than Google Bard on responding to customers using a frequently asked questions format. [ChatGPT](https://www.eweek.com/big-data-and-analytics/chatgpt/) is the most recent iteration of [natural language processing](https://www.eweek.com/big-data-and-analytics/natural-language-processing/) models. It is more suited to time management, appointment reminders, and ensuring all steps of a process are carried out in sequence. And the ChatGPT [AI-powered chatbot](https://www.eweek.com/big-data-and-analytics/ai-chatbots/) takes advantage of [machine learning](https://www.eweek.com/big-data-and-analytics/machine-learning/) to respond conversationally. Improvement in this area is much needed and ChatGPT is a definite step forward. Yet it’s also relatively inaccurate with texts below 1,000 characters, is only strong in English, and of course, AI systems can be programmed to avoid the patterns that classifiers monitor. [OpenAI](https://openai.com) admits that it is not yet fully reliable. There are similarities between ChatGPT and Google Bard but there are also differences. ChatGPT and Google Bard are both generative AI platforms.
