Counter-Strike 2 announced, coming summer 2023 (Polygon)

Valve confirms Counter-Strike 2 is coming and will run on Source 2 with new and improved maps, 'sub-tick updates' and dynamic smoke grenades.

In practice, that means players will be able to create “holes” in smoke grenades and even blow them away with frag grenade explosions. Plumes from smoke grenades are now dynamic volumetric objects that interact with the environment, and they will react to lighting, gunfire, and explosions, Valve says. The new Counter-Strike will run on Valve’s Source 2 engine.

These updates have revealed that the Source 2 update is real, is likely [called Counter-Strike 2](https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikestubbs/2023/03/05/counter-strike-2-reportedly-launching-this-month/) in some form or at least internally, and given the increase of references to it in recent weeks, suggests that it is about ready to launch. But then yesterday when Valve [updated the Twitter picture again](https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikestubbs/2023/03/21/counter-strike-2-release-date-rumours-restart-after-valve-posts-new-image/) it featured one body, and it arrived four days after the previous image. The first reason this is relevant is to note that just because Steam gets an update or goes down, it doesn’t mean CS2 is launching. [back-end branch updates](https://www.forbes.com/sites/mikestubbs/2023/03/14/counter-strike-2-release-date-nears-as-devs-test-source-2/) like this that have led to a lot of the information we know about Counter-Strike 2. That would suggest that either Valve is now trolling us through backend updates, or the much more likely option is that Counter-Strike 2 will finally launch later today.

Counter-Strike 2 tick rate changes explained (GGRecon)

Find out everything there is to know about the new Counter-Strike 2 tick rate changes in this guide here, as we've explained it all for you.

However, in Counter-Strike 2 there is a new sub-tick architecture that supposedly negates the importance of tick rate entirely. In a game defined by milliseconds like Counter-Strike, tick rate is - as you can imagine - incredibly important. One of the biggest issues players had with CS:GO was the fixed tick rate of 64 on official servers.

Counter-Strike began as a mod for Half-Life back in 1999. It was acquired by Half-Life developer Valve Software and released as a commercial product in 2000.

The initial test of Counter-Strike 2 includes only "Deathmatch and Unranked Competitive matchmaking on Dust2," but more content will be added in the future. Smoke grenades are a key part of the gameplay in all versions of Counter-Strike. And "Full Overhaul" maps will be rebuilt from the ground up with new geometry and features. Additionally, Valve will overhaul how smoke works in the game. "Touchstone" maps like Dust2 will keep the exact same geometry and features as their CS:GO counterparts but with some improvements to lighting or materials. Counter-Strike 2 by no means offers a fundamental change to the original game's design.

All Features Confirmed For Counter-Strike 2 So Far (Game Rant)

Valve recently wowed fans with several Counter-Strike 2 announcements, and some interesting features have already been confirmed for the game.

"Touchstone" maps are classic CS maps that are mainly designed to act as a gateway between CS:GO and Counter-Strike 2, only offering minor graphical improvements in the way of lighting. Of course, Counter-Strike 2 also aims to provide a serious level of graphical improvement over the old Global Offensive. [the Counter-Strike community](http://gamerant.com/cs-go-player-gun-skin-150k-dollars/) regarded the tick rates that installments such as CS:GO operated off of on a server level. [Valve's Source 2 game engine](https://gamerant.com/valve-source-2-engine-rtx-support/), smoke grenades in Counter-Strike 2 will produce 3D volumetric plumes of smoke that can directly interact with the environment. These improved smoke grenades will also be able to fill confined spaces such as holes and tunnels more realistically, greatly improving the scope of plays that can be made with them. Valve has already announced several exciting new features for Counter-Strike 2 which hint at the level of technological advancement that the release will herald for the IP.

All of the visual effects have been updated in Counter Strike 2. In-game visuals have been redesigned with the goal of better readability. Regardless of tick rate, moving and shooting will be equally responsive and the grenades will land the same way. Another big change being introduced are sub-tick updates, which are “the heart of Counter-Strike 2.” With this new feature, the server will no longer evaluate game events in terms of ticks and will instead know the exact instant that a button is pressed. However, the smokes thrown by Terrorists seem to be tinted yellow while those from Counter-Terrorists will have a lighter hue to them.

Counter-Strike 2's reveal has sent the game's skins market wild (PC Gamer)

Valve has done a Valve once more. Not only did it announce Counter-Strike 2 out of nowhere but, with one finger raised aloft at all the web3 donkeys, ...

[I play Counter-Strike because I love it](https://www.pcgamer.com/in-counter-strike-2-valve-may-have-just-created-my-dream-game/) (opens in new tab), and simply due to sheer length of time played I have some reasonably valuable skins, but in terms of a time-to-money ratio you'd be much better off doing almost anything else. Since the Source 2 rumours started it's had a minor spike in value, going for around $175, and in the last 24 hours several have been sold for around $200. There's a small but notably rising tide in skin value for the simple reason that speculators know one thing about Counter-Strike 2: Whatever else, it's going to attract new players and in all likelihood increase Counter-Strike's popularity. Which leads me, finally, to the most important thing. The bigger question is going to be whether these valuations hold because, at the moment, they're entirely speculative. I won't even pretend to understand the sticker market, which has seemingly random spikes in value all the time, but the time-limited avatars will definitely continue to rise in value over time. You couldn't see them in-game, even if your opponents could, because you couldn't see your avatar's body (beyond the hands holding the gun). Skins that have been 'retired', meaning that the cases which you can get them from no longer drop, are the most valuable for obvious reasons, whereas skins that can be obtained from current cases are not so sought-after. We're not talking about thousands of these things being sold: One gun going for $730 spikes the graph and, afterwards, the valuation will usually drop again. CS:GO skins are a very big deal indeed, with people in extreme cases paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for a new look for their gun. That is, skins which have particularly lighting-sensitive and pearlescent finishes. The general rule with CS:GO cosmetics and their value is the older the better.

The complexity of that journey means that Valve is used to wrangling its community, but after 11 years of CS:GO, there's every chance that some players will be similarly resistant to change. That meant that when CS:GO's significant overhaul came around in 2012, many of those 1.6 players had been playing the original game for 12 years, and were again reluctant to make the jump. But that journey has rarely been smooth - competitive Counter-Strike players felt that Source's competitive ceiling was too low when compared to their current 1.6 patch, and many didn't make the jump. But in Counter-Strike 2, Valve has another problem to overcome: its current game is demonstrably one of the biggest in the world, and that means a lot of things that can potentially go very wrong, in a very public manner. Counter-Strike 2 vs Valorant: Which is better shooter in 2023? (Sportskeeda)

With the successful tactical shooter franchise getting a new iteration, players have begun to wonder about the fate of Counter-Strike's close cousin, Valorant.

That said, those who prefer the hard-core and realistic shooter experience will want to choose Counter-Strike 2 over Riot’s supernatural shooter. Now that Counter-Strike 2 is set for a release window, it’s natural for players to wonder which one of the games is a better shooter in 2023. Hence, it may be too soon to know whether CS 2 is a better shooter than Valorant or not. Valorant, on the other hand, is a hero tactical shooter featuring magical abilities and precise gunplay. Valve finally pulled the curtains off the highly-anticipated Counter-Strike 2 on March 22, giving players a taste of what’s to come this summer.
