Review: 'Old God's Time,' by Sebastian Barry (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

Tom Kettle, the main character of Sebastian Barry's heartbreaking new novel, joined the Gardaí — Ireland's national police force — in the 1960s.

As a teen with little schooling, he joined the British Army, and on behalf of the failing empire, killed people who might've been noncombatants. He expects to spend his remaining days alone in a rented house near the Irish sea. "Old God's Time" begins with a quote from the Book of Job — more foreshadowing, and not the happy kind. Tom recalls more than he shares, and when the cops leave, he collapses in "heart-scalding guilty tears." The country." "The truth included.

What I got wrong: Sebastian Aho silenced me and many others who ... (The Athletic)

Drafting Aho at No. 35 overall seemed to be a stretch for this writer at the time.

He never really coached too much on the offensive — it was the defensive side of the game. Since entering the league in 2016-17, Aho ranks 11th in goals (209) and 24th in points (456). 1 center, the coach was also pushing and helping him to become just that. It didn’t take long for Aho to separate himself from the pack — or the player with whom he shares a name. Pronman had him 28th (hat tip to Corey, now with The Athletic, for being the only person I remember to give him a first-round grade), and Mark Seidel ranked him No. But without a third-round pick — which was dealt the But it was also possible they had selected the other Aho, the Finn listed as a right wing — and the 18th-best European skater — by Central Scouting. 5 overall in the first round of the draft, the Raleigh media was assembled in the fourth-floor conference room of PNC Arena to watch Day 2. It wasn’t like there was a wide gulf between the two in 2015. If you’re not at the draft, the second day is nearly impossible to track. If you’re at the draft, you can (sometimes) hear the selection, but it also shows up on the large draft board behind the stage. Any player in attendance — after hugging what seems like an endless parade of parents, significant others, billets, arena workers and strangers — is brought to the stage to put on his new team’s jersey and prepare for his NHL Glamour Shots moment.

On the research front, Sebastian joined Cystic Fibrosis Individualized Therapies (CFIT), a research project started by SickKids and CF Canada in 2015. CFIT scientists are testing Sebastian’s cells to determine if they respond to current CF drugs, evidence that could help broaden drug access to Sebastian and other people with rare variants. After months of not knowing, the family had a precise diagnosis, a treatment plan and support from the SickKids CF team. The faulty gene doesn’t allow water and salt to move in cells as they should, leading to sticky mucus in the lungs and digestive tract, and salt on the skin. “Like most parents,” says Vicky, “we will try to move the earth, moon, and stars to help our child.” Despite the negative screening and inconclusive diagnoses, Sebastian’s parents insisted on more testing. Searching online, she came across the expression, “salt on the brow, not long for this earth.” She found links to cystic fibrosis (CF), a genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system.
