Naspers shuts down Foundry: A setback for SA start-ups ... (Ventureburn)

Shockwaves hit the African tech ecosystem as Naspers shuts down its Foundry fund, raising concerns about South African start-ups.

Moreover, the pandemic has accelerated the adoption of digital technologies across the continent, presenting significant opportunities for tech start-ups to grow and thrive in the years to come. There are still plenty of investors and venture capital firms actively investing in African start-ups, and entrepreneurs should not lose hope. The group has also recently sold off several of its other tech investments, including its stake in Tencent, a Chinese tech giant. The decision to shut down Foundry is part of Naspers’ broader It was aimed at supporting the growth and development of these start-ups by providing them with the necessary funding and resources they need to succeed.

Aortic Calcification Ups Risk for Acute Kidney Injury After Radical ... (Renal and Urology News)

Acute kidney injury is a frequent complication after radical cystectomy, prompting investigators to search for novel risk factors.

Greater kidney function was significantly associated with decreased odds of acute kidney injury. In multivariable analysis, an ACI of 25% or more was significantly associated with 1.5-fold increased odds of acute kidney injury. According to a receiver operating characteristic curve, the threshold for acute kidney injury development was an ACI of 25% or more, Dr Fujita reported. Among the 616 patients, 248 patients had an ACI of 25% or more and 368 patients had an ACI less than 25%. Investigators tallied the percentage of the 12 sectors that contained calcification. The ACI was the average percentage of calcified sectors across the 10 scans.

UPS, FedEx move aggressively to court regional parcel shippers (FreightWaves)

UPS Inc. and FedEx Corp. have begun to take market share from their regional parcel delivery rivals by leveraging generous price discounts, according to ...

In the report, Moody’s said it expects LaserShip’s leverage to remain very high and liquidity to remain weak through 2023. Prolonged weakness will “increase the risk that the company’s capital structure is unsustainable at currently very high leverage levels,” according to the report. According to one of the sources, American Securities paid hefty sums for both companies and entered the integrated era “levered for perfection.” It hasn’t gone perfectly. However, the two acquisitions and the subsequent leverage that was built up were not on Holifield’s watch, according to one source. The company was formed out of the 2021 merger of Eastern carrier LaserShip and OnTrac, which operates out of the western U.S., by private equity firm American Securities LLC. In the report, Moody’s lowered the corporate rating of LaserShip — it did not use the rebranded name — to Caa1 from B3 and the probability of default rating to Caa1-PD from B3-PD. However, the aggressiveness of the national carriers is different than it has been in the past, the sources said. 1 if a new collective bargaining agreement is not agreed to by the current expiration date of July 31. Moody’s describes a Caa rating as being given to companies that are “of poor standing … Much of today’s shifting is playing out in a climate of excess capacity, a scenario not seen since before the pandemic. While this may be a positive trend for shippers, it has raised familiarity issues with consumers who are not aware of, or comfortable with, most of the new carriers, a source said. As shippers return more parcels to the national carriers, they become eligible for price breaks they may have relinquished when they bolted.

Rivals set out to woo UPS customers as fears of a strike grow - The ... (theloadstar.com)

Contract negotiations between UPS and the Teamsters has seen FedEx nudge UPS customers to switch to them as protection against a strike.

Older customers recall a strike at UPS in 1997 that lasted for 15 days, and the seemingly endless contract stand-off between west coast longshoremen and employers has prompted shippers to divert traffic away from west coast ports. A strike at UPS would trap a large volume of Amazon traffic that would have to compete for alternative carriage. FedEx has targeted UPS customers with a message urging them to shift traffic over. FedEx needs volume and revenue, noted LPF Spend Management in a blog post commenting on the integrator’s customer-fishing drive. The five-year contract for some 340,000 UPS employees who are Teamsters members is going to expire on 31 July. The integrator needs early commitments to facilitate its capacity planning.
