Brief letters: Not watching The Whale | Rishi Sunak's pool | Morality of greed | Burying Marx and Spencer | Missing newspapers.
We read the paper online, but it means we can’t cut out the Martin Rawson cartoon and stick it on the kitchen wall. Now the wheels really have come off everything. But I was shocked to see the director’s implicit claim that the film “humanises” fat people.

Humpback whales found in European waters are known to travel north and south along the eastern North Atlantic, but one was unexpectedly found over 2050 mile ...
But that all changed with an email from our colleague Lindsey Jones of the North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalogue on February 19, which gave us the news that this whale was re-sighted in Newfoundland, Canada. The images of the ventral fluke and dorsal fin confirmed that this was a new humpback whale previously undocumented in Irish waters and so it was added to the Irish Humpback Whale Catalogue curated by the IWDG and allocated a unique ID of #HBIRL11. On Jan 17, 2010, a humpback whale was observed and reported to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) Sighting Scheme by local IWDG members in inshore waters off Hook Head, County Wexford on the Irish south east coast.

Brendan Fraser deserves love, but his Oscar-winning film The Whale sure doesn't.
Brendan Fraser deserves so much more than just a statue, he deserves an apology and the ability to choose whatever projects he wants for the rest of his damn life. Fraser deserves better, and I can only hope that his Oscar win gives him the confidence and freedom to feel empowered enough to be pickier with his roles. He has always been a remarkable presence on screen, and the only reason he's having this so-called "comeback narrative" is that They call him "brave" because he's willing to play a character who exists as the greatest fear of the dominant society. Aronofsky consulted with the Obesity Action Coalition, a nonprofit organization that claims to "elevate and empower those affected by obesity through education, advocacy, and support," but in reality, is a group that actively wants fat folks to disappear into smaller, more socially acceptable people. The only humanity that exists in this film comes from Brendan Fraser, who is so vigilantly fighting to showcase Charlie as a deeply complex, traumatized individual. The film posits fat existence as a personal, moral failure, and one that is worthy of harassment and mockery. Sisters" on cable's favorite exploitation machine, TLC, are presented with a kinder hand than the 2-hours of meticulously crafted misanthropy that is "The Whale." I've seen multiple people excuse the film's ghoulish portrayal of Charlie's weight and the cause behind it because "The Whale" treats overeating the way Aronofsky's film "Requiem for a Dream" treats drug addiction. Not to mention, speaking ill of "The Whale" is frequently confused with speaking ill of Brendan Fraser which ... [Lindy West described in her scathing takedown of "The Whale"](https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/mar/10/lindy-west-on-the-whale) for The Guardian, "a joyless, harmful fantasy of fat squalor," and I'll admit I was uncertain if I dared venture into similar waters. Brendan Fraser deserves the world, but "The Whale" is an irredeemable presentation of cruelty disguised as empathy.
Darren Aronofsky's award-winning film was plenty controversial before last night's win, and people still aren't happy about it.
Alongside Brendan Fraser's Best Actor award, 'The Whale' won an Oscar for best makeup—but its fatsuit is highly controversial.
While film buffs generally seem happy for Brendan Fraser’s comeback, The Whale‘s two wins cast a pall over the night for many viewers. Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale is surely the most divisive—a film that earned Brendan Fraser a Best Actor win but has been dogged by [accusations of fatphobia](https://www.dailydot.com/unclick/the-whale-brendan-fraser-fat-suit-venice-film-festival/). In the New York Times, Roxane Gay [wrote](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/12/10/opinion/the-whale-film.html), “how this film deals with Charlie’s fatness is egregious: exploitative and at times cruel.” Fraser’s transformation into his 600lb character was explicitly treated as a spectacle, clashing with his and Aronofsky’s defense of the film as a sympathetic drama. Filmmakers seemingly prefer to hire a thin celebrity in a fatsuit than cast an actor who actually looks the part. Over the past few years, there’s been increasing pushback against the use of fatsuits, in part due to the film industry’s discrimination against fat actors.
Brendan Fraser's career comeback reached its apex Sunday evening when he reached for his Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Darren Aronofsky's drama ...
With tears in his eyes, Fraser expressed, “That he fell hopelessly, inconveniently in love with whomever is immaterial. I think that that’s something that we can all take a page from.” His character, Charlie, is a morbidly obese man trying to make amends with his daughter.
