“Everything Everywhere” was filmed in early 2020, but its theatrical release was delayed by two years due to the pandemic. “Thank you so much for welcoming me back.” “Thank you,” he said. He’s been the toast of awards season, winning statues at the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards, in addition to landing his first Oscar nod. He didn’t return to acting until 2021 in “Everything Everywhere” as Waymond Wang, the goofy husband to Michelle Yeoh’s multiverse-straddling laundromat owner. He rose to fame before his teenage years, playing Harrison Ford’s sidekick in 1984’s “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and appearing in 1985’s “The Goonies.” But Quan quit acting shortly after because he found there weren’t many substantial film roles for Asian people.

As he tearfully took to the stage, the actor gave an emotional speech, reflecting on the trajectory of his career and giving heartfelt thanks to the people in his life. While he remained in the industry over the years, working behind the scenes on films (including in the stunt department on 2000’s X-Men), Quan finally broke back into the world of acting to after a successful audition for To all of you out there, please keep your dreams alive.” This is the American dream!”

Last year, Apple TV’s “CODA” became the first streaming movie to win best picture. Ratings usually go up when the nominees are more popular, which certainly goes for “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” “Thank you to the Academy for recognizing the superhero that is a Black woman,” said Carter. Tony Curtis was nominated for “The Defiant Ones” in 1959 and Janet Leigh was nominated in 1961 for “Psycho.” Curtis thanked “hundreds” of people who put her in that position. The “Top Gun” sequel ($1.49 billion), took best sound. Scheinert dedicated the award “to the moms of the world.” Daniel Roher’s “Navalny,” about the imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, took best documentary. Sarah Polley, though, won best adapted screenplay for the metaphor-rich Mennonite drama “Women Talking.” Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”) would have been the first performer to win an Oscar for a Marvel movie. The audience — including his “Temple of Doom” director, Steven Spielberg — gave Quan a standing ovation as he fought back tears. She’s the first best actress win for a non-white actress in 20 years. “Everything Everywhere,” released all the way back in March 2022, helped revive arthouse cinemas after two years of pandemic, racking up more than $100 million in ticket sales.
