The 2023 Oscars largely went down as expected. However, there were some tight acting races that turned out differently from what many pundits expected.
Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” which host Jimmy Kimmel mocked as a $100 million flop, wasn’t going to be an Oscar darling, but it was expected to win Best Score and, perhaps, Production Design for its lavish old Hollywood scenery. Dean is a particularly unfortunate, egregious omission, because she was a star in this year’s Best Picture nominee “Triangle of Sadness.” The most unfortunate snub of all is when great artists are excluded, purposefully or accidentally, from the annual In Memoriam segment.

Even a win for the editing, which “Everything Everywhere All at Once” also won, would have been a nice recognition of the undervalued technical craft that was on display in every frame. There weren’t going to be many awards that “The Banshees of Inisherin” was going to get, but it felt like writer-director Martin McDonagh might actually have a real shot at this one. This collaboration between director Sara Gunnarsdóttir and writer Pamela Ribon was so much better than “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse.” Where the book of that latter short was far more layered, the process of adapting it lost any of its emotional depth and humor to become rather tepid. When considering just how meticulously constructed the film was and how titanically good Blanchett was, it is hard not to feel like this was one that got less than it deserved. Though “In Bruges” will always be one that holds a special place in his career, “The Banshees of Inisherin” is now his best written work. The way Hoffmeister worked to create an unsettling intimacy in even the smallest moments of “TÁR” helped to make it into one of the more visually interesting films of the year. The winner chosen ended up being “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which, while a respectable choice, largely felt like it was based upon the idea of cinematography being about the scope of the setting of the film. That made composer Volker Bertelmann racking up another win for “All Quiet on the Western Front” one of the biggest surprises of the evening. There were plenty of nightmares to “All Quiet on the Western Front” as it showed the horrors of war, though Hoffmeister’s cinematography ensured “TÁR” burrowed its way deep into our minds. Back with all 23 awards presented live, this year’s Oscars was dominated by “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which won in the most significant categories that it was nominated for, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Original Screenplay. [slate of nominations themselves](https://theplaylist.net/2023-oscars-snubs-and-surprises-viola-davis-taylor-swift-brian-tyree-henry-20230124/), the snubbing of stunning works like “Aftersun,” “Decision to Leave,” “Nope,” “RRR,” and “Saint Omer” meant this year would always be missing out on some absolutely fantastic films. That it reunited him with writer-director Martin McDonagh and co-star Brendan Gleeson for the first time since they made the similarly incisive “In Bruges” back in 2008 only made it sting that much more.

What’s more, Angela was the first person to be nominated for a performance in a Marvel film at the Oscars. I like Jamie Lee Curtis but she didn’t outperform Angela Basset or Stephanie Hsu,” said another. And by the time the end of her heartwarming speech, Jamie Lee was in tears as she exclaimed: “I just won an Oscar!” Sadly, the Academy has done little to acknowledge its lack of diversity since its first-ever awards show in 1929. I was disappointed by her not winning, but more disappointed by her reaction,” another person wrote. Angela reprised her role as Queen Ramonda — the grieving mother of T’Challa — in last year’s hit Black Panther sequel.
