When finished, with a towel around her neck, she headed for the exit. But in the aftermath of those Games, Shiffrin rallied to [win the 2022 World Cup overall title](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/17/sports/skiing/shiffrin-world-cup-olympics.html) and the 2023 season saw her swiftly — almost astonishingly — [accelerate toward](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/24/sports/skiing/shiffrin-vonn-world-cup.html) the career World Cup win record and a fifth World Cup overall title. Returning to Denver, Mikaela and Eileen and other family members were at Jeff’s bedside in the hours before While preparing for the first race without her mother, Mikaela took a casual run next to a training course in Sweden and fell hard, crashing into the protective netting at the trail’s edge. “These top-level coaches would tell me that Mikaela was just ripping up a racecourse,” Jeff Shiffrin said in 2013 as he sat in his Colorado home. When Eileen rejoined the coaching staff, Mikaela won her next two races and was on the podium for seven of the season’s final 10 events. “People who fall generally do it a lot because they take too many risks and don’t have the technical skills to get out of trouble they get into.” Her idea of a perfect day is 10 (or 15) uninterrupted training runs through a racecourse. He added: “The one thing Mikaela has in excess is technical skills. Then there is Shiffrin, whose only serious injury has been a torn medial collateral ligament in a knee in 2015 that cost her two months of racing. One day at the gym last fall, as a family took snapshots next to Shiffrin’s image, she walked past unobserved. If a bone-breaking, high-speed crash does not wreck a promising career, then chronic injuries, especially to the lower back and knees, typically persist because of the enormous forces racers absorb to execute precise turns at 60 to 80 miles per hour.

American alpine skier Mikaela Shiffrin has broken the career record for most World Cup race wins. She has now won more races than any other skier in history ...

I love to have my own privacy, but I also feel like that ends up hurting the potential for athletes to grow up in the sport and to enjoy it the way I've been able to. And that's something that kind of happened, it kind of just happened in ski racing. It wasn't something that we had to specifically fight for in my career. And really, in the end, it allows other athletes to get more resources to do what I've been able to do through my career. It's not on the level where athletes are able to make enough money to actually live their lives based on their careers. The more you actually win, the more you realize how much work and effort it takes to win and to stay there. If I for instance was based in Europe, I wouldn't be able to go to the grocery store without getting stopped five to 10 times. If you let yourself get away with a lower standard of skiing, somebody else is going to come catch you and beat you probably consistently. That's going to come up and catch you in the next race. She said the day-in-day-out work of training happens all year, "and you dream about the race wins. This victory came 12 years to the day after Shiffrin's first World Cup race in the Czech Republic at age 15. Shiffrin tied this record Friday before breaking it Saturday to become the winningest alpine skier in history.

“I can’t put a name with the numbers,” Shiffrin said later in the day in a U.S. “Of course, you want to win, have a lead, so you have to sort of be smart but also I just wanted to be fast and ski the second run like it’s a race. “I still had the same feeling at the start of this run that I have every race — I shouldn’t feel pressure, but somehow I feel something in my heartbeat. “She’s unbelievable and it’s really cool to race against her and I hope to beat her one or two more times before I’m done. She gained 0.04-seconds on the first sector, remained poised through the next two, and carved up the closely-set gates at the bottom to finish with nearly a one-second victory. “That’s the best feeling, to ski on the second run,” Shiffrin said of her 53rd World Cup slalom win, also an all-time record. Moltzan was pushed to third and would ultimately finish just off the podium in fourth. “To the whole team and especially all the people who have helped me this whole season and my whole career. Next came Hanna Aronsson Elfman, who was delighting the crowd with a blistering pace, but straddled a gate in the second sector. Seventeen-year-old Cornelia Oehlund aggressively charged the course with zero restraint, giving the crowd flashbacks of a then 17-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin’s first World Cup win at the same location back on Dec. The victory, Shiffrin’s 13th this season, comes exactly 12 years to the day after her first World Cup race. Her combined two-run time on the Störtloppsbacken slope was 1 minute, 41.77 seconds, 0.92 seconds ahead of Swiss skier Wendy Holdener and 0.95 in front of Swede Anna Swenn-Larsson.
