We break down the five biggest things we want to see from the rumoured successor to the Sonos Five - the Era 500.
This is great news for people that place convenience over having the best audio possible, as it means you can stream music to them from pretty much any modern electronic device and streaming service quickly and easily. We haven’t tested the Era 300 to see if the problem has repeated itself yet, but the good news is that Sonos has done work to improve the newer speakers' audio delivery. This is an immersive audio technology we're increasingly seeing in the world of music, which uses Each of the six drivers is also powered by its own class D amplifier. To catch you up, the new 300 speaker has a "cinched hourglass" aesthetic we thought looked rather nice during our hands-on session at the launch event, leading our eyes on the ground to conclude: It’s just a very utilitarian-looking box of a speaker, where the only real design flourish is the Sonos logo on its front. But while we’re excited about testing the new Era speakers imminently, naturally many readers (and the What Hi-Fi? Sonos has officially presented its new flagship speakers. The Era 300 and Era 100 models are supposed to provide "sound of a new level" and also offer good.
The Sonos Era 100 is also available in matte black and matte white. The maximum effect can be achieved by combining two Era 300s in a stereo pair, or by connecting other Sonos audio devices to them (in 5.1.4 or 7.1.4 configurations). [Era 100](https://www.sonos.com/en/shop/era-100) cannot boast of supporting surround audio and Dolby Atmos technology, but it also has good specifications. Like the 100, it supports Bluetooth 5 and Wi-Fi 6 (although the HomePod limits to Wi-Fi 4 due to processor restrictions). The 300 is bigger and heavier than the 100, measuring 6.30 x 10.24 x 7.28 inches and 9.85 pounds, respectively. Due to its embrace of tech, the Era 300 appears distinct from the 100. To fit that sensation of sound in three dimensions, the speaker has six amplifiers aimed in various directions. Spatial out loud is really about filling the room and making you feel like you’re at the center of it. Some of the early mixes weren’t fantastic because they lacked essential components like vocals or a center as audio producers and musicians began to understand what Spatial is all about. The right use of spatial is really out loud, versus headphones. However, six years after the Sonos One’s initial launch, the company is basically putting an end to the model in order to make room for the Sonos Era 100. Also, the device has a physical button that lets you turn off the power to the microphone so that it won’t listen when you don’t want it to. Buttons on top of the system include play/pause, skip, replay, voice assistant mute and the ability to pair or unpair devices. The Sonos One at a #179 price tag sounds perfect and is at the moment a popular choice for retail stores, restaurants and even homes. Similar to Apple, Sonos claims that the two systems’ disparate tech makes them incompatible in terms of connection.
The new Sonos speakers are here, and they're coming at you from every direction.
The Era 300 supports Wi-Fi 6 and it's the first mains-powered Sonos to handle Bluetooth audio streaming – although it's worth noting that Spatial Audio is Wi-Fi only because of its data requirements. Refreshingly, Sonos hasn't done an Apple here and charged an arm and a leg for those: expect to pay about £19. The tweeters include one forward-firing one, two side-firing ones and one upward-firing ones for that all-important height. The Sonos Era 300 has been built from scratch rather than based on an existing Sonos, and it's all about spatial audio. To deliver that audio there are six drivers: two woofers for the bass, angled left and right for stereo imaging, and four tweeters. American audio device manufacturer Sonos has officially unveiled its latest pair of smart speakers, the Era 100 and Era 300.
The Era 100 will cost R6,500 and the Era 300 will ask R11,000. We’ll have to reserve judgement on how they sound, and if Sonos has hit the mark with its spatial audio implementation until a review unit shows up. You’ll want to ditch the cables with these, but they do support a line-in connection. Now the Era 300 joins the list, which partly explains its odd design. That’s by design – as it is a “remastering” of the company’s popular Sonos One smart speaker. With these new speakers, the company is promising “a whole new chapter in sound and design innovation”.
Sonos is the first Apple Music partner to bring spatial audio to the table. Besides, new Sonos speakers are coming! Read to find out more.
You see, the problem with spatial audio in music is that, unlike movies, music is generally not mixed with spatial audio in mind. That last bit is somewhat challenging since music normally puts you in a listener's perspective, that is, you enjoy music by listening to others in front of you. That doesn’t mean, however, that more music with surround features won’t be produced in the future, offering true spatial sound by design. It’s no coincidence that Sonos announced its partnership with Apple Music the same day it unveiled the Era 100. Of course, the Era 100 comes with other goodies, too. The Era 300 will set you back $449 and offer six speakers strategically located to offer three-dimensional sound.
Here's why the Sonos Era 300 and Era 100 smart speakers cannot be paired as surround sound speakers with Sonos Playbar or Playbase.
Considering the Sonos Playbar and Playbase have been around for years, it was inevitable that their support would end at some point. The story is also true when it comes to the Era 100. Unfortunately, the Playbar and Playbase still miss out. The former is here to take on the Apple HomePod 2 and Amazon Echo Studio — two smart speakers that know all about spatial audio. For this reason, Era 300 is not compatible with Playbar, Playbase, or Beam (Gen 1). The duo, as I write this, is already available to pre-order priced at $449 and $249, respectively.

The new Sonos Era 100 and Era 300 are available for preorder now and will be available on March 28. “Using the microphone array in Era 100 and Era 300, Trueplay optimizes the sound for the unique acoustics of your space with just a tap in the Sonos app.” It’s worth at least acknowledging that while having Trueplay in the new generation of Sonos speakers fixes things going forward, it doesn’t change the status quo for Android users who already have a Sonos speaker. And to date, that phone always has had to be an iPhone (unless you have a portable But Sonos has always required a phone to do the listening for ambient sound and fine-tuning the speakers. Android users no longer are left out of the Trueplay feature.

The Era 300 will also be able to play spatial audio through Amazon and Apple services. Sonos customers will have access to spatial audio on Apple Music starting March 28, 2023. Movie fans can pair two speakers with Arc or Beam (Gen 2) to create a supercharged Dolby Atmos experience that draws them deeper into the action. Tuned by award-winning artists and engineers, the Era family powers new levels of immersive listening with expanded connectivity and Trueplay technology.

The improvements are good, but the new Sonos Era 100 (as with all Sonos products) isn't cheap. At a fundamental level, the Sonos Era 100 and Sonos one are very similar speakers. The Sonos One has long been one of our favorite smart speakers for its fantastic sound and voice assistant integration. Their dimensions are very similar, the Era 100 is ever-so-slightly wider and deeper, but by less than an inch. Both speakers are similar, but the Sonos Era 100 is certainly more feature-rich and versatile than the Sonos One. The Sonos One has been our top smart speaker for so long for many reasons, but we think it sounds fantastic. Look down at the tops of these speakers and there's more of a noticeable aesthetic difference. Instead, sitting somewhere between the more affordable [Amazon Echo Studio](https://www.techradar.com/reviews/amazon-echo-studio-review) and more expensive [Bose Home Speaker 500.](https://www.techradar.com/reviews/bose-home-speaker-500) We'll answer those questions and more in our Sonos Era 100 vs Sonos One guide below. But Sonos has released a new speaker that looks set to take its place: the Sonos Era 100. Does that mean the Sonos Era 100 is significantly better? But here's will summarize what you need to know about the new Sonos speaker and the model it replaces – especially since the Sonos One will remain on sale while stocks last (Sonos isn't make any more, though).
Its new Era 300 wireless speaker and Arc and Beam soundbars will support spatial audio via Apple Music from 28th March.
