Ancient Viking treasure has oldest-known reference to Norse god Odin (New York Post)

Researchers have discovered that an ancient gold disc found in southern Denmark includes the earliest written reference to the Norse god Odin, ...

“We also know that in 541 A.D. “We know that in 536 A.D. “They are exquisite.” The bracteate also includes an inscription of a swastika — an ancient religious symbol found throughout Europe and Asia throughout the Iron Age until it was integrated as a Nazi symbol in the 20th century, according to NBC. The Prose Edda, a main source for Norse mythology compiled in Iceland in the 13th century, refers to Odin as the “Allfather,” who ruled over man and other Norse gods, known as the Æsir. The previous oldest reference to Odin was found on a brooch in Southern Germany from the latter half of the 6th century.

Odin was one of the main gods in Norse mythology and was frequently associated with war as well as poetry.

Oldest Reference To Norse God Odin Found On Fifth-Century Gold ... (IFLScience)

Researchers have discovered the earliest known runic inscription referencing the Norse god Odin, resident of the heavenly realm of Asgard and overseer of ...

The father of Thor and Baldr, Odin was believed to preside over Valhalla, the heavenly hall where half of all slain warriors spent their eternal days. For instance, more than 200 engraved bracteates have been found in Northern Europe, yet the vast majority of these have so far proved too difficult to interpret. The thin gold ornament – or bracteate – was found amongst a trove of ancient treasure that has come to be known as the Vindelev Hoard since its discovery in the central Jutland region of Denmark in 2020. “Not only has the structure of the language developed tremendously since the 5th century, but many words have also fallen out of use,” says ancient language specialist Krister Vasshus. With no other written sources available from fifth-century Denmark, runologists are unsure exactly who this person was, although the name is likely to refer to a king or overlord whose divine right to rule came directly from Odin. Etched into the surface of an ornamental gold disk, the engraving predates the next oldest mention of Odin’s name by around 150 years.

A gold coin found in a Norse treasure hoard depicts a man with an inscription that says “Odin's Man” giving him divine rights, experts said.

In itself, the interpretation is quite a major achievement, which will help us understand other runic inscriptions – on other bracteates, for instance.” We may be lucky to find one every 50 years,” Krister Vasshus, an ancient language specialist and one of the people to make the discovery, said in the statement. It was in reference to the unknown king or man that was seen on the disc. “Generally, we find short runic inscriptions with fairly comprehensible content, but this time the text is long and consists almost entirely of new words,” Vasshus said in the statement. “This type of inscription is extremely rare.
