[[5]](#_ftnref5) UN Women, 2022, Facts and figures: Women’s leadership and political participation [Facts and figures: Women’s leadership and political participation There is need to re-look how women’s presence in politics contributes to a country or sub-region’s socio-economic and political stability. The 2021 Africa Women in Political Participation Barometer highlights electoral systems including temporary special measures for women’s political participation, finances and resources, political party practise, electoral laws and management and media including social media as formal factors that hinder equal participation of women in politics. Equal opportunities for women to participate in politics are not enough, in some cases they can be exclusionary—hence the need to promote equity in politics. There could be unexpected positive changes in the upcoming elections for the next two years, yet there are only a few positive outliers that could change the status quo on women’s political participation in the continent. This implies that Africa and the world at large is far from reaching the 2030 Sustainable Goal number five target of women’s equal and effective political participation.

“Many organisations are growing their teams and the sector is continually changing, for example, attracting people from different backgrounds for the first time. “We’ve made great strides, but there is clearly a need to continue improving diversity in the finance industry. I believe that progressive mindset within the field has naturally helped provide a more respectful, positive space for women to advance their careers too.” “A huge part of that equity comes down to the way we finance the change. This, in turn, can create a new pipeline of talent for companies to help shape this much-needed just transition. It is, therefore, important that organisations within the sector continue to give opportunities that can help support women with an interest in the sector. In comparison, the broader finance industry has women account for just 19% of C-suite positions, according to a [McKinsey report](https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/financial-services/our-insights/closing-the-gap-leadership-perspectives-on-promoting-women-in-financial-services). “If we’re serious about realising a net-zero transition that works for the broadest possible set of people, then we need to ensure the big decisions are taken by a truly representative group of leaders who benefit from high levels of cognitive diversity as a group. “Women and people from historically marginalised communities know full well what happens when the architects of a system all belong to one group. So there are knock-on, multiplier effects for inclusion and gender more broadly when we succeed in increasing women in the green finance field.” If nations are to realise this vision, then it only makes sense that women are adequately represented in this burgeoning green finance market. It is said that they were making lilac garments at the time of death. In 2020, women still accounted for almost two-thirds of all adults unable to read – 478.5 million of them lack basic reading skills, with very little improvement seen over the past two decades. As female teachers are important role models for girls, the lower self-efficacy of female science and mathematics teachers may affect girls’ own self-efficacy in these subjects. Women remain underrepresented in careers in the area of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), although the jobs of the future will primarily be in these industries. Among 10 low- and middle-income countries with detailed data, women are less likely to have used a basic arithmetic formula in a spreadsheet in the 7 poorest countries, while parity in this area was found only in the 3 richest countries. In 2019, in 30 out of 121 countries, fewer than 20% of graduates in engineering were women. Girls’ confidence in mathematics and science can be negatively affected by peers, parents, teachers and school counsellors who hold or even propagate gender stereotypes in STEM. In many counties, the poorest girls are twice as likely to be out of school, compared to the national average. Globally, women make up 31% of research and development positions in science, with the lowest proportions in Southwest Asia (19%) and East Asia and the Pacific (24%). The findings also reveal that major gaps persist in innovation and technology, which can be instrumental in empowering girls and women.
On International Women's Day 2023, Christine Morris, Senior Executive Vice President at TD, reflects on the meaning of embracing equity at work.
At TD, we challenge colleagues to lead by example and to self-reflect on the type of organization and culture we want to have. Our ally colleagues throughout the organization must continue their efforts to help advance the careers of the women around them. We need to take into consideration the differing experiences, roadblocks and challenges women with different backgrounds and who are at different stages of their lives and careers face. It's where I started this journey of being a more public facing advocate for women and where I began to hear and learn more. Women at TD is an area of focus for the Bank, one that intersects with all of our other areas of focus, highlighting how important intersectionality is to equity. In order to effect lasting change, allies need to advocate and make space for women. I looked at my own experiences and how they may contrast to others and looked at my working team and reflected on how they represent me. Our job is to work with colleagues across the Bank, both women and allies, to help focus on providing a culture where women can continue to excel in the workplace, today, and going forward. In many of the conversations I've had with colleagues across the Bank, they talked about how leadership looks different to each person's career journey – and I knew, in order to be inclusive, we needed to ensure all women saw themselves in our community. In addition, [multiple studies](https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/18/experts-worry-remote-work-may-hurt-womens-career-advancement.html) have shown that the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rise of remote work, has had a negative effect on the work-life balance of working women. After all, Women at TD is about our colleagues' entire career at the bank, not just when they reach a certain level; everyone's career path and goals are unique and important. Now we are not only focused on the path that lies ahead, but on ensuring that the progress we have made remains relevant to all women and continues to move forward.

Like Virginia Woolf, we are eager to discover what intellectual, social, and creative revolutions women can spark if they gain equal opportunities.
We want female education for excellence to become a supreme goal, and we want to equip the next generation of girls and women with everything they need to take Israel's political and economic leadership forward. And this significant female presence in positions of power must become something we take for granted, just as we take for granted the right of women to own property, vote in elections, and achieve a university education. Woolf believed that if women received these starting conditions, their voices would spark a genuine revolution in the world of literature. In the many years in which I served as the only woman on boards of directors, I kept coming up with the same question: What wise voices and revolutionary ideas are we missing when women are so underrepresented among decision-makers? At the time, women around the world were still fighting for rights that we now consider obvious, such as the right to vote or acquire a higher education. Woolf hoped to understand where these women had disappeared to and what could be done to give them a voice.
