Trek-Segafredo rider takes race lead as late crash spoils sprinters' day.

After a crash distrusted the bunch even further, with just over a kilometre to go, the roundabout represented a critical final obstacle. Through it all, QuickStep could never get organised, and even if Florian Sénéchal looked like he might drag him through, Merlier could never get himself in a position to contend for the victory. With 60km to go, Gregaard crested the Côte de Méréville to take the lead in the mountains classification. He has a modern languages degree from Durham University and has been able to put it to some use in what is a multi-lingual sport, with a particular focus on French and Spanish-speaking riders. After joining Cyclingnews as a staff writer on the back of work experience, Patrick became Features Editor in 2018 and oversaw significant growth in the site’s long-form and in-depth output. As such, it was a fairly calm start to proceedings, with precious little interest in the breakaway. However, although the wind wasn't blowing strongly, no one wanted to take any chances, leading to a tense day in the saddle where little happened, but teams were on alert in case it did. Pogačar held on, with Michael Matthews - the only other interested party, pipping the Jumbo-Visma domestique to second place. A further 25km on, there was a small split in the bunch, though not by any real drive to force echelons, and TotalEnergies quickly stitched it back together. The key factor, however, was always going to be the wind. In the overall standings, Pedersen leads by two seconds over Pogačar, with Merlier third at four seconds. Edoardo Affini (Jumbo-Visma) led through the roundabout, but behind him was Alex Kirsch, who led out the sprint for Pedersen.

A lifelong cyclist and cycling fan, James's racing days (and most of his fitness) are now behind him. "Never tried that before in a race like this, so it'll be nice for the TTT." Potential winners such as Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) were left well back as the race thinned into ones and twos, only opening out again with 500m to ride. "It was really hectic. It saw Pedersen take over the race lead "It's nice to start the season well and Paris-Nice is a really nice race, so of course it's nice to get a win," he said afterwards.

Mads Pedersen Survives Chaotic Sprint To Win Stage 2 Of 2023 ... (FloBikes)

Former world champion Mads Pedersen won a chaotic mass bunch sprint for the finish line at Fontainebleau on Monday to take Stage 2 of the Paris-Nice.

Team UAE Emirates superstar Tadej Pogacar showed his maverick side again, bursting out of the peloton at 74km to win a six-second bonus in an intermediate sprint for a second consecutive day. Monday's second stage ended outside Fontainebleau gardens, and a crash just ahead of the finale smashed what should have been a regular bunch sprint. It is seen as a mini Tour de France.

Mads Pedersen sprinted to victory on Stage 2 of Paris-Nice after a superb team performance all day and a perfect lead-out towards the line from Alex Kirsch.

“For a team like us who isn not normally in the top 3 teams at TTT, it can be a good new thing to try and maybe it can work out well for us that we do ‘suicide pulls’ in the end and then Skjelmose just has to sprint himself for the finish line. I came for a win but of course it’s nice to have the yellow jersey. “Kooij came f**king fast in the end so it was tight at the end, really close in fact and I wasn’t sure I held on for the win and you don’t want to celebrate anything before you know it’s right. “It’s nice to have the yellow jersey. “It’s nice to start the season well and Paris-Nice is a really nice race so, of course, it’s good to get a win here. It’s a pity there wasn’t more crosswinds and then it would have been less hectic at the finish.
