Why the power in Liverpool and Manchester United's rivalry is set for ... (The Independent)

Liverpool and Manchester United have famously never peaked at the same time and amid huge issues at both clubs off the pitch, their fortunes could about to ...

[that juncture 2-1 in August](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/manchester-united-liverpool-result-final-score-b2150411.html) - Ten Hag actually matched the number of wins that both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had in the same fixture. Some of this, ironically, is down to the finances. It is why a forward - and especially a fast forward like Victor Osimhen - is a priority. It is also arguably the first time in well over a decade Liverpool’s title victory - as well as all of the sensational football around it - has seen them overtake United in a manner that would previously have been considered unimaginable. This is why people in football are again talking about United as the future. They have one of the biggest technical partner deals - and they haven’t won the league since 1990. They sell an incredible number of shirts and have the second biggest shirt deal in the Premier League. It was nevertheless the United’s long reputation as one of the biggest money-makers in the game that ensured Fenway Sports Group sought to sell at almost exactly the wrong time. In the last two months alone, it could have been a landmark moment for the English game were its two biggest clubs to be sold at the same time. That is because of a huge change in fortunes within the Premier League’s greatest rivalry. The Anfield hierarchy were not just facing into a market that was much more restricted than expected from the Chelsea sale, but were also up against perhaps the biggest brand in global sport.

Two bitter rivals lock horns at Anfield on Sunday as Liverpool host Manchester United in what promises to be a classic Premier League encounter.

Leicester are slipping back towards the relegation zone and this is a massive game for Brendan Rodgers as his side aim to push back into midtable. They have looked more organized in his two PL games in charge but scoring goals remains a huge problem as they lost 1-0 at Leeds last time out following a lackluster display. Pep Guardiola and Man City are now five points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal and have 13 games to go. Eddie Howe’s side have been so focused on winning the League Cup that their Premier League form has dipped but they should now be back on track and finding more goals is their main aim. Below is the full schedule, as you can watch all 380 games across our NBC platforms. Who will be the surprise package? Xavi is without a trio of key players as Robert Lewandowski, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele are all out. Ferland Mendy is still out, while David Alaba injured his hamstring against Liverpool and won’t return until early April. Gavi and Pedri are essential to how they play under Xavi but the latter is missing, which is a big blow too. Veteran Luka Modric continues to defy logic with his displays in midfield, while Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema have been in fine form in attack. It’s not all doom and gloom as Xavi’s project is still ticking along nicely and Barcelona are heavy favorites to win the Spanish title once again. This United squad seems to have a real togetherness and a lovely balance to it right now.

It seems brands are sensing an opportunity, with the newly-crowned NBA record points holder even more of an asset than before to FSG and all of his commercial partners. Who knows, it could go on to prove everybody wrong; people probably questioned the arrival of James Milner at Liverpool, for example. Liverpool.com says: While FSG has always delegated its transfer activity to experts in the field, including at Liverpool, it's worrying to see such a widely-panned trade carried out on their watch. Looking in danger of missing out on the playoffs, this is a vital window for Liverpool's 'sister team', but it seems the late business conducted has left onlookers unimpressed. As for the news that FSG would consider selling a stake in the parent company, rather than just Liverpool, this might not be a hugely welcome development. But trades are subjective, and Dom Luszczyszyn scored the trade a slightly more respectable D-. For the most part, it is a family of high achievers.

“I think Man United is the team in form in the moment, maybe together with Arsenal — and City are doing well,” Klopp said, adding that the home crowd could be a factor. The 2-2 draw at Barcelona in the Europa League playoffs last month was evidence of the growing confidence and courage of a team that has been unable to keep pace with City and Liverpool in recent years. There have been signs of the 2020 champions rediscovering their form in recent weeks with morale-boosting wins against Everton and Newcastle. At Arsenal in January, United missed the chance to put real pressure on the leaders with a 3-2 loss, curtesy of Eddie Nketiah’s winner in stoppage time. Mohamed Salah needs one more goal to equal Robbie Fowler's club record tally of 128 goals for Liverpool. Man Utd looking to do the Premier League home/away ...

Klopp’s side really need a win in this game to keep up their aspirations of a top four finish in the 2022-23 Premier League table. After a terrible run of winning one point in four games (D1 L3) to kick off 2023 in the Premier League, Liverpool’s midweek win over Wolves means that they are now unbeaten in four games and have kept a clean sheet in each match (W3 D1). It was their first defeat in 22 Premier League matches and the first time that they’d lost a league game in 2022. That strike also saw Rashford score for the fifth time in the Premier League for Man Utd versus Liverpool; a tally that only Wayne Rooney (six) has more than. It’s hard to look past a man that’s scored in each of his last five appearances against Man Utd as Liverpool’s key player for this match. The Opta supercomputer’s heavy lean towards a Liverpool win in this fixture may surprise you. They have lost just one of their last 35 Premier League matches at Anfield (W26 D8 L1), averaging 2.46 points per game on home soil across that period. With 29 goal involvements in all competitions in 2022-23 (20 goals, nine assists), Salah is by far Liverpool’s most dangerous attacking threat. Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool side are unbeaten in their last six league games against Man Utd at home (W3 D3) since a 1-0 defeat at Anfield in January 2016. Manchester United and Liverpool renew their rivalry this weekend, with the two most successful English clubs meeting in the Premier League at Anfield. The Red Devils have lost just one of their last 11 games – one of these coming pre-World Cup, 10 after – with eight wins and two draws. They haven’t achieved this in the competition since winning against Liverpool at both Anfield and Old Trafford in 2015-16.

[Liverpool](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/) has scored 10 goals from set plays, two adrift of [Tottenham](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/liverpool-spurs-mohamed-salah-thiago-25447452) who lead the way, while Manchester United are joint-second bottom of the standings with three. He played in six of the seven better games too. It makes the Reds’ recent set play goal drought seem brief, as Liverpool went 26 matches and 91 shots without finding the net from a dead ball opportunity in that campaign. The fact the Dutchman only played four-and-a-half of the games between the two clashes with the pair of Midlands rivals shows how vital he is in attacking dead ball situations. The expected goal data hints at what he adds too. Van Dijk can embarrass them just as he has before. The teams have had very similar campaigns in this importance sense; Erik ten Hag’s side have simply spaced their goals out to greater effect (if only it were this easy to arrange). There would be no better team for the Egyptian to equal (or hopefully beat) Robbie Fowler’s record of 128 Premier League goals for Liverpool against either. A think back over his Liverpool career tells you as much. The position is not as extreme at the back, but the Reds possesses the better record, having conceded four compared to seven. On the score sheet against Julen Lopetegui’s side were Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, just as they were for an unforgettable win over United in 2020. It’s certainly realistic that their last two scorers could find the net once again though.

One, while their ownership of the Braves won’t prevent Liberty from buying into Liverpool, it would likely prevent them from investing in FSG as a whole. They see an opportunity to invest in a big club to increase funding and make them better. A company like Liberty Media buying into a team also owned by James would help the two sides work out any potential future deals. Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have seemingly moved away from looking for a full sale of the club.

The Kroenke sports and entertainment company are said to be worth £10.6bn with FSG themselves not far behind in fourth, who hold a reported net worth of £8.7bn. It's not clear in the report what kind of stake FSG are willing to sell at Liverpool, although they may also take bids for their own company to help raise funds. Liberty Media arguably hold the biggest sporting empire in the world after taking ownership of F1 back in 2017. The hope is that any new investment can help the club ahead of a crucial transfer window where big-money moves for Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount are being tipped. Both announcements at the end of last year hinted that the clubs were up for sale, but the two Premier League rivals have moved in different directions since. The value of football clubs has ballooned in recent years with Chelsea's record £2.5billion sale to Todd Boehly and his consortium setting a new precedent.

Why is Fabio Carvalho not playing for Liverpool? (The Athletic)

Carvalho is a well-regarded prospect at Liverpool. But, for now, he remains just that — he must be patient.

“He played well for us in a couple of games and now the situation is we have to make the squad and he couldn’t make it. Given Liverpool’s usual formation doesn’t allow for a roaming playmaker, Carvalho is preferred on the left of midfield or attack. He’s in the middle of the group and the team so that’s all fine. This is what Liverpool will be working on with Carvalho as well as helping recalibrate the tactical understanding of his role. [a close friend of Carvalho’s since their time at school together](https://theathletic.com/3556178/2022/09/01/harvey-elliott-fabio-carvalho-liverpool/) — there is a question mark around his defensive discipline. That doesn’t help a lot but that’s another thing in a long career you have to go through. “Fab is a very young player as well and a big talent absolutely,” he explained when asked about Carvalho’s situation by The Athletic ahead of the Newcastle game. He played on the left wing in both games. [Carvalho had signed for Liverpool from Fulham](https://theathletic.com/4176833/2022/05/23/liverpool-confirm-fabio-carvalho-signing-from-fulham/) as a prospect, albeit a hugely talented one, but here he was seizing his opportunities in the here and now. [It was a precious goal in a big game for Liverpool](https://theathletic.com/live-blogs/liverpool-newcastle-score/N09YFJYEKggc/), who had started the season sluggishly, and a huge one for Carvalho. When the game was effectively won against Wolves on Wednesday, again Carvalho stayed on the sidelines.

Routs, stunners & drama - Liverpool v Man Utd classics (BBC Sport)

As Liverpool prepare to host Manchester United at Anfield, BBC Sport revisits some of the great matches between the two sides from the past 30 years.

With 86 minutes on the clock, and the final seemingly heading for extra-time, the mercurial Eric Cantona found space in the box and fired the ball through a forest of bodies to seal the win for United. It was a clash of Scots in the dugout, with Sir Alex Ferguson's side enjoying life at the top of the Premier League table when they headed to Anfield to take on Graeme Souness' Liverpool. Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool (24 January 1999) Old Trafford has been the venue for a number of dramatic clashes between United and Liverpool, and this proved to be one of the visitors' most outstanding victories. United finished with 10 men after Paul Pogba was dismissed after 60 minutes for a tackle on Keita, when the visitors were already five goals to the good. His side headed into the game after a disappointing 4-0 defeat away to Brentford, with pressure mounting on the new manager and the sense he needed a win to get fans on side.
