A case in favour of the NOTA option (DAWN.com)

MANY a democracy around the world gives voters the option to reject all candidates in case they do not want to vote...

Interestingly, in Indonesia, candidates have to compete against the NOTA option even if they happen to be the lone contender in a constituency. In 2013, while hearing a petition, the Supreme Court of India declared that while casting vote is a democratic duty, rejecting any candidate is also a democratic right of the people. Indonesia and India are among the countries that give this ‘none of the above’ (NOTA) option to their citizens during elections.

The rally was arranged by the Winder Action Committee in which the protesters carried placards and chanted slogans against the government and officials of the department concerned which had allotted the land. The dispute was over 15,000 acres of land in the command area of the under-construction Winder Dam. Mr Bhootani said the “illegal allotment” of 15,000 acres of agricultural land would hurt the rights of the locals as the dam was being constructed to benefit the people of Hub and Lasbela districts.

Dar's overconfidence that he could secure enough financing from 'friendly' countries as a substitute for IMF dollars was misplaced.

As pointed out by the SBP, the early conclusion of the ongoing review under the IMF funding programme is critical to “address near-term external sector challenges”. No one is willing to step up in a big way without the IMF on board. Prices of goods and services have spiked by 31.5pc and are projected to surge further because of steep currency depreciation — the rupee lost over 9pc to the dollar in the interbank in the last two days — removal of subsidies and energy price adjustments, with little hope of let-up over the next couple of years.

The main feature of this exercise is that it is being dubbed the country’s first ‘digital census’, thanks to the use of technology to record data. Political parties, civil society, and most of all the people of Pakistan need to be assured that the count will be fair, and help pave the way for a better planned future. Yet in order to plan for a better future, this crucial exercise needs to be conducted in a transparent and credible fashion, to avoid the serious questions that arose about the accuracy of the 2017 head count.

The IJT remains the most organised of student groups, retaining a virtual monopoly over crucial campuses like Punjab University, often reflected in its capacity ...

But quite aside from this formality, most young people in Pakistan remain wary of organised politics, even if one accounts for the fillip provided to otherwise demobilised youth in mainstream Pakistan by the Imran Khan messiah show that is the PTI. While some are given some representation in established groups like the IJT and ethnic-national councils, this is largely tokenism. Student groups are given a long leash where it suits the interests of patrons in the university administration. The IJT and others of its ilk have always espoused a reactionary agenda. In the four decades since, pockets of progressivism have survived but parochialism is the norm. The regime allowed the Islami Jamiat-i-Tulaba (IJT) free rein on many campuses, but some ethnic-nationalist and left student groups still kept the flame of progressive politics alive.
