[“The Book of Boba Fett”](https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/26/entertainment/the-book-of-boba-fett-episode-5-recap/index.html) (really “The Mandalorian Season 2B”), the premiere felt low-key in its narrative scale. What that left, in an episode written by executive producer Jon Favreau, were enjoyably small bits of comedic business, most of them involving Grogu, a.k.a. (Karga did explain the absence of Cara Dune after Disney opted to

'The Mandalorian' Season Three Gets Off to a Disappointing Start (Rolling Stone)

The premiere falls victim to the Star Wars shared universe and 'Book of Boba Fett,' while still obscuring Pedro Pascal's wonderfully expressive face.

Favreau seems to be signaling that he values the cool visual of the helmet more than he does the value of letting one of [the most expressive actors](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-recaps/the-last-of-us-episode-6-recap-pedro-pascal-powerhouse-joel-ellie-threat-rutina-wesley-1234678616/) working in television today use his greatest weapon. (*) In “The Return of the Mandalorian,” the Watch was basically down to the Armorer and Paz Vizsla. Perhaps the arc of this season will be Din recognizing that some of the Watch’s rules are bad, in the same way that Ahsoka eventually recognized the dangers of the Jedi rules against emotional attachments. “The Return of the Mandalorian” and everything that’s happened since has walked all of that back. [Breaking Bad-ish scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKMdzJFcyro)) where the malfunctioning, legless IG-11 crawls around the floor with his one remaining arm to try to kill Grogu. Meanwhile, hilariously, the one Book of Boba element that does get re-explained is the part about Mando’s banishment and path to atonement, which is already in the opening montage. First he needs to get IG-11 fixed, because he needs a droid to help him go to Mandalore, and this is somehow the only one he trusts, even as we saw in both Season Two and especially in “The Return of the Mandalorian” that he has largely gotten over his fear of droids. [The Mandalorian](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-recaps/mandalorian-season-2-finale-rescue-recap-1105641/) Season Three. So he has to travel the galaxy to find a replacement memory circuit, and only then can he go back to Mandalore to see if it’s even safe to visit. And I imagine any Mandalorian-only viewers were baffled by a lot of “The Apostate.” Mando and Grogu are reunited and Mando has a sleek new ship, neither of which are explained. So we are reminded of IG-11’s sacrifice [in the Season One finale](https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-recaps/mandalorian-season-finale-recap-redemption-931455/), Greef Karga discussing the gentrification of Nevarro, and the purge of Mandalore. We do not see a single frame of footage featuring Luke Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, or Grogu, even though Mandalorian Season Two ended with Mando and the little guy saying goodbye, seemingly forever, and even though

The Mandalorian Season-Premiere Recap: This Is the Way (Again) (Vulture)

The episode opens with The Armorer (Emily Swallow) methodically forging a new helmet, a process that, from all appearances, seems to be unchanged since time ...

Is Bo-Katan right about the Children of the Watch contributing to the decline and fall of Mandalore? Even if “The Apostate” is mostly about what’s to come (with some summing up of what happened between seasons), it still offers plenty of reasons to keep following Din and Grogu’s journey. Din outmaneuvers his opponents using some nearby asteroids for cover only to wind up in the guns of the hulking vessel of Pirate King Gorian Shard (Nonso Anozie), an intimidating (if mossy-looking) villain who really does not like Din (and likes Din even less after he escapes his clutches). “Your cult gave up on Mandalore long before the Purge,” she tells Din, and the planet is “ravaged, plundered, and poisoned beyond repair.” But Din isn’t prepared to despair. The streets are filled with merchants (and a vegetable-chopping droid), musicians, and creatures of all races, including a Mon Calamari and some Kowakian cousins of Salacious Crumb. Nevarro, he wants them to know, is “no longer friendly to pirates.” When the other pirates don’t get the message, Karga and Din take them out. The Armorer takes a moment before replying, “This is the way.” And with that, the premise of The Mandalorian’s third season has been established. With the gator (and the opening titles) out of the way, Din catches up with the Armorer, who’s not mad, but she is disappointed. To Karga, it’s nonsense Din can ignore and live the good life with Grogu by his side. In the meantime, we got [The Book of Boba Fett](https://www.vulture.com/tv/the-book-of-boba-fett/), a series that was only tangentially related to The Mandalorian apart from a stretch of episodes that were absolutely crucial to the story of The Mandalorian. Could this be the end of the Children of the Watch? Helmet forged, she emerges from a cave to join the others on a lakeside beach in the middle of an otherwise desolate landscape, where she prepares, with great pomp and ceremony complete with drums and banners, to bestow the helmet on a somber-looking dark-haired kid.

'The Mandalorian' Season 3 Premiere Recap: Together Again (The New York Times)

But to leave the planet, Din and Grogu have to evade a band of pirates. So, at the end of this chapter, this is where we leave the Mandalorian: standing before someone who has been both an ally and an enemy, and asking for help. But to help him survive the potentially hostile planet, he needs the help of the assassin droid IG-11, which sacrificed itself to save him and his cohorts back in Season 1. When those pirates show up and start making demands, Din lends his gun to a Wild West-style shootout in the streets. Our heroes’ final stop this week is on Kalevala, a planet near Mandalore, where they find a near-empty castle and an embittered acquaintance: Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), the fallen Mandalorian political leader. Favreau and the director Rick Famuyiwa begin this new season with a scene in which a Mandalorian boy receives his first helmet from the Armorer (Emily Swallow), and is asked to make his pledge never to remove it. This has been a point in this show’s favor from the beginning. Din tells the Armorer that he believes enough of Mandalore still stands for him to perform the necessary rituals and cleanse himself. If, on the other hand, you also watched the spinoff series “ [The Book of Boba Fett](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/07/arts/television/the-mandalorian-boba-fett-temuera-morrison.html),” you know that in its last few episodes, Din and Grogu reunited to help their pals on Tatooine take down a vicious criminal gang. That is when our heroes come speeding in from outer space in their N-1, to save the day. Given that it has been a while since the last real “Mandalorian” episode, Favreau shows an impressive amount of restraint in keeping this premiere relatively short. Most of Mandalore has been rendered uninhabitable by years of civil war and the death throes of the Empire.

And yet it has seemed like the lead-up to the third season of “The Mandalorian” has been muted for such a major show. Peli Motto ( [Amy Sedaris](/cast-and-crew/amy-sedaris)) also returns in episode two, a chapter that follows the standard “Mandalorian” structure of problem-action-resolution cliffhanger in a way that’s satisfying enough without being groundbreaking. He has other plans, revealing that he will travel to the Mines of Mandalore to find the waters that will allow his redemption. [Katee Sackhoff](/cast-and-crew/katee-sackhoff)’s Bo-Katan Kryze will be a major part of the season, which is a good thing. You’ve had your time with the legacy characters like Obi-Wan and Boba Fett, and you’ve even had a critical darling in “Andor,” but “The Mandalorian” is about adventure. “You ready for an adventure?” This line from the second episode of the third season of Disney+’s massive hit “The Mandalorian” sums up the current purpose of this landmark show.

In response to Carano’s comments, [Lucasfilm](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/lucasfilm/) released a statement soon after that the former MMA fighter was no longer employed at the company, calling her posts “abhorrent and unacceptable.” She was also dropped as a client by UTA. The Mandalorian: Dave Filoni on Grogu's Future in Star Wars (Hollywood Reporter)

The Mandalorian's Dave Filoni talks season 3, learning to direct live-action, and where Grogu might be in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

He’s a great person to work with, and he weaves a great tale. Writing and directing and collaborating on this type of thing with so many people is just the top of the mountain for me at this point. Even the technologies we are using are things he would talk about, and so I just like to tell people that I was very well prepared. From the first episode of Mando to “The Jedi” with Rosario Dawson, there was a tremendous difference, and I credit that to Jon [Favreau], who’s a great mentor and friend. There are many different people that could wield the force, and maybe Luke is the last Jedi as far as what Yoda would consider a Jedi. My mind was well prepared by him to face the challenges that you face day to day on a set, telling a story. So, pressure, no pressure, there’s always going to be pressure because we’re dealing with something that so many people care about in Star Wars, and it’s a real privilege just to get to be a part of it. And she really worked at coming up with a plan to educate me and get me involved. He’s just an incredibly talented person and a great person to collaborate with. “And so I still talk with him to this day. “In my experience, there’s definitely a way to weave everything together and make it exciting. [Kathleen Kennedy](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/kathleen-kennedy/) first took the reins of Lucasfilm in 2012, one of her first orders of business was to prepare [Star Wars](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/star-wars/) scholar [Dave Filoni](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/t/dave-filoni/) for live-action storytelling.

'The Mandalorian' Season 3: What Happened to Gina Carano's Cara ... (Collider.com)

Where did Nevarro's marshal go? The Mandalorian Season 3 premiere explains why Gina Carano's Cara Dune is gone!

But there is still [hope for the character](https://collider.com/the-mandalorian-cara-dune-controversy-recast-gina-carano-fired/). When this was announced, LucasFilm made it clear that she will no longer be in The Mandalorian, nor do they have plans to work with her in the future. While Cara Dune was effectively written out of The Mandalorian, they managed to give her character a happy ending. Later she officially joined the government and became a New Republic Marshal and a ranger of the New Republic. Now a special forces agent, Dune is busy somewhere in the galaxy and isn't likely to get a break anytime soon. A LucasFilm spokesperson called her statements "abhorrent and unacceptable" and officially said that she was no longer an employee of the studio. It wasn't particularly notable as her character had no reason to be involved in that part of the story. He offers Din a home on Nevarro and the role of marshal, which was once Dune's. [story continued in The Book of Boba Fett](https://collider.com/book-of-boba-fett-episode-5-review-mandalorian-pedro-pascal-disney-plus/), Dune wasn't mentioned. The Season 3 premiere shows that executive producer Jon Favreau and his team chose to deal with Dune's absence differently. [The Mandalorian](http://www.collider.com/tag/the-mandalorian) Season 3 is out, but not all the show's characters have returned.

All the 'Star Wars' lore in 'The Mandalorian' Season 3, explained (Los Angeles Times)

Season 3 features protective space dad Mando (Pedro Pascal) and adorable Grogu (Baby Yoda) on yet another journey steeped in "Star Wars" allusions.

They appear to have a connection to the Death Watch, a Mandalorian terrorist group introduced in “Star Wars: The Clone Wars.” Perhaps Season 3 of “The Mandalorian” will finally reveal what happened between [Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff)](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-11-27/star-wars-the-mandalorian-katee-sackhoff-bo-katan-dave-filoni) leading the Mandalorians against the Galactic Empire in “Rebels” and her [first appearance](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-11-13/mandalorian-star-wars-bo-katan-kryze) in “The Mandalorian.” Purrgils were first introduced in “Star Wars Rebels,” where a certain Jedi padawan was able to forge a connection with them using the Force. [Mandalorian and “Star Wars” lore](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2020-10-29/the-mandalorian-star-wars-clone-wars-rebels-history). “The Mandalorian” has proved that blaster shootouts and the antics of a hungry cute toddler remain entertaining. One of “Andor’s” strengths was in showing how ordinary people live under Imperial rule when powerful space wizards or honor-bound warriors are not around to save the day.

But at least we finally know what happened to Dune, even if the delivery was clumsy. A better approach would have been to drop the exposition into dialogue. It’s nice to know that Cara Dune is off having her own adventures with the New Republic, but maybe there was a better way to address her absence. But the biggest issue of them all wasn’t narrative, but a matter of staffing. By having this simple Q&A exchange, it’s obvious an explanation was shoehorned into the script. Episode 1 had to bridge the gap for fans who didn’t watch The Book of Boba Fett, establish a new season-long arc, and communicate that time has passed.

In short order, Disney had taken a brand that managed to seem rare and special for decades—despite its cartoon shows and toys and all manner of other ancillary tie-ins—and metastasized it into ruin. Spurred on by Andor’s restorative power, I watched the season premiere of The Mandalorian this morning, only hours after it dropped on Disney+, with a perhaps slightly abashed enthusiasm. But The Mandalorian premiered only a month before the most recent Star Wars film, The Rise of Skywalker, It honored both the corny humor and genuine galactic awe—a sprawl of worlds and creatures and civilizations—of the original films. (And, indeed, I read many actual Star Wars novels.) I was there on opening day for the releases of each of the “Special Editions” of the original films, thrilled to finally see the primary texts of my obsession on the big screen. I was a kid who read an encyclopedia of Star Wars terms as if it were a regular novel.

Switching From 'Andor' Back To 'The Mandalorian' Feels Very Strange (Forbes)

I think it’s just that Andor showed me a vision of the prestigious heights that new-era Star Wars could achieve, and while The Mandalorian is back and it’s fun, it also…isn’t that. I think the problem right now is everything that is not these two shows. It’s the same world, but feels wildly different, as in this past episode we see Mando pursued by a pirate lord with leaves and vines for hair. Andor, like Rogue One before it, feels like it’s sort of just on a different plane of existence than anything else going on in the universe. The Mandalorian, instead, is a few things. And its overall storylines are continuations of things set in motion by Dave Filoni with his animated series, and a lynchpin to a wider universe that has already expanded with other shows (Boba Fett) and will continue to expand (Ahsoka).

Over several episodes in the Boba Fett series, we see Grogu decide to return to the Mandalorian who had become a father figure to him. [had to break such a sacred Mandalorian rule](https://collider.com/the-mandalorian-helmet-explained/) in the first place. Djarin has to reconnect with old allies to get back there, including Carl Weathers' Greef Karga, now a wealthy, somewhat obsequious official; Amy Sedaris' weathered, deal-making mechanic Peli Motto and Katee Sackhoff's descendant of Mandalore's royal family, Bo-Katan Kryze. That's because important developments for this series happened on another Disney+ Star Wars story, The Book of Boba Fett. You can practically feel the series' storytelling machinery ponderously cranking into gear through each of these visits. (As an aside, there's a serious problem with a spinoff series like Boba Fett, if its best episodes essentially feature another program hijacking the storyline.) Check out episode seven of the second season to see why Djarin

Star Wars: How Did The Mandalorian Get Grogu Back? (Den of Geek)

How is Baby Yoda back with Din Djarin on The Mandalorian? We have the answers if you didn't watch The Book of Boba Fett.

The only way to redeem himself is to “bathe in the living waters of the mines of Mandalore.” And now you know that when Din does reach Mandalore in season 3, Grogu will be right by his side. Grogu has gone off with Luke Skywalker to the ancient Jedi planet of Ossus, the site of the Jedi Master’s new academy. Finally, Luke decides to give Grogu a choice: either stay with Luke and complete his training or go back to Din and become a Mandalorian. But fear not, if you’re still confused about this, we’ll give you a very brief rundown of how Din and Grogu found each other in The Book of Boba Fett. It’s no surprise, then, that “how did The Mandalorian get Grogu back” was one of the top searches on Google for the season 3 premiere. From the very first second Din Djarin swoops onto the scene in “The Apostate,” he already has little Grogu by his side, a development that may confuse those who didn’t watch last year’s Boba Fett spinoff.

Grogu Hiding In The Mandalorian Premiere Is A Dumb Reveal (Screen Rant)

Grogu's first scene in The Mandalorian season 3 plays out as if it was a big reveal, which doesn't make sense considering The Book of Boba Fett.

Not only did this lessen the impact of The Mandalorian season 2’s finale, but it also played against both Boba Fett and The Mandalorian season 3’s premiere. Din Djarin or Grogu appearing in The Book of Boba Fett by itself is not a problem, as interconnectivity can always help a franchise as large as Star Wars, but resolving The Mandalorian season 2’s biggest cliffhanger before season 3 premiered did not make sense. While such an approach to Grogu’s comeback in The Mandalorian season 3 would make sense considering The Mandalorian season 2’s ending, which saw him leaving with Luke Skywalker for Jedi training, The Book of Boba Fett makes this big reveal pointless. The Mandalorian season 3’s trailers, TV spots, and series recap make no effort to hide the reunion, either. Din Djarin, now piloting a Naboo N-1 starfighter, came to the rescue of the Armorer and her creed in The Mandalorian season 3’s opening sequence, a scene that highlighted Djarin’s strong bond with the Mandalorians who raised and trained him. Though not every Disney+ Star Wars show is directly tied to The Mandalorian, shows like The Book of Boba Fett and the upcoming Ahsoka are part of the “Mandoverse.” One of the problems with this shared universe approach has just become evident in The Mandalorian season 3’s premiere.

The Mandalorian: What Happened to Cara Dune - And Why It's ... (CBR)

The Mandalorian Season 3 premiere explains what happened to Cara Dune - and it's good for fans of the character formerly played by Gina Carano.

This means that there is still a future for Dune and that a different actor can bring the character back to life -- perhaps in Season 3 or Her story can continue with another actor if she's needed or interest is still there -- and whatever that mission is can also add to the mythology of The Mandalorian. The character had a huge role to play within the series and was even slated for a Disney+ show of her own, but Carano's firing left viewers wondering if Dune would be recast or simply written out of the franchise altogether, wasting her incredible potential and Cara Dune became a huge part of the Star Wars fandom after she was introduced. After her home world of Alderaan was destroyed by the Death Star, she had a burning hatred of the Empire. As The Mandalorian returned for Season 3, there were lots of questions left unanswered -- most notably the fate of Cara Dune.
