Some night sky viewers in northern Colorado got a rare treat for this part of the country. The northern lights were visible overnight.

There will be a few more clouds compared to last night, according to First Alert Meteorologist [Ashton Altieri](https://www.cbsnews.com/colorado/personality/ashton-altieri/). [issued a strong Geomagnetic Storm alert on Monday](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/news/g3-strong-geomagnetic-storm-conditions-observed-feb-27), and indicated that in addition to the late Sunday and early Monday morning visuals, there's a chance the northern lights might also be visible in parts of the U.S. Occasionally energy from solar flares pushes the aurora away from the North Pole and towards the far Northeast, upper Midwest and Washington state.

Charnick said it’s easier to see the lights, also called the aurora borealis, with a camera. Red is a very difficult color to pick up at night with the naked eye. “Energized particles from the sun slam into earth’s upper atmosphere at speeds of up to 45 million mph, but our planet’s magnetic field protects us from the onslaught,” according to a post on Space.com, a scientific website devoted to explaining astronomical events in language for lay persons. This aurora borealis was caused by coronal mass ejections from the surface of the sun that occurred Saturday and Sunday. “It has to be a strong event for it to be visible this far south,” said Charnick, a freelance photographer from Fort Collins who also works for the National Weather Service. He was rewarded with what he calls the best northern lights show in northern Colorado since 2021.

Some parts of the U.S. also have a chance at seeing the Northern Lights on Monday night.

Even those who were on flights during the event got a chance to see the lights. 'Rare' Northern lights show on display for second night in a row in UK (ABC News)

The astronomical phenomena – scientifically known as the aurora borealis – originates from the sun and produces a colorful night sky display on Earth.

Parts of North America were also privy to the light display on Sunday night. Residents further north on the continent with access to clear skies will have the best chance at seeing the lights. Both events are known to contribute to geometric storms, according to the Meteorologists are predicting sightings in the U.K. During more moderate geomagnetic storms, the auroras can be faintly visible from northern parts of the U.K. with a multi-colored display against the dark night sky.

The last chance to see the northern lights across some parts of the UK could come tonight, the Met Office has confirmed.

Want to get a glimpse of the lights tonight? The best conditions to view them is when the sky is dark and clear of any clouds. They generally extend from 50 miles to as high as 400 miles above the Earth's surface. The incredible occurrence usually appears in high latitude regions closer to the Arctic, such as [Scandinavia](https://www.countryliving.com/uk/homes-interiors/interiors/a41975631/scandinavian-kitchen-designs/). Auroras danced across the night sky above the U.S. Sunday night.

Skies will likely clear by around midnight from west to east in the greater Twin Cities area. AURORAS IN THE USA: Earth's magnetic field is reverberating from the impact of a CME on Feb. Its arrival brought a gust of solar wind blowing faster than 800 km/s (the highest value in years), and triggered a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm. The lights spread across multiple US states including Oregon, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, and North Dakota. The best areas for viewing were in northeastern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. There was a spectacular sky show across the northern United States and Canada Sunday night.

The captain dimmed the lights and made a 360-degree turn so passengers could see the stunning display.

"But we were sitting on the right-hand side and after a few minutes the pilot switched back and did a 360 loop around for everyone to see." Mr Groves said he and his new fiancee Jasmine Mapp were on the left-hand side of the plane, which took off from Reykjavik, and would not have been able to see the lights if it was not for the "very kind" pilot.

Ryan Hannahoe says the Northern Lights are hard to forecast, but Montanans could expect to see more of them than usual.

Hannahoe said a value of five or above could mean a chance to see the northern lights in Montana. “That’s why you’re seeing more activity because this activity is coming from the sun…So it’s an 11-year cycle. So, from now until 2026 you’re going to see more aurora,” Hannahoe said.

When Michigan State Police troopers were just finishing their midnight shift in wintry darkness, you can't imagine the beauty they saw — and shared.

One photo shows the Mackinac Bridge arching over the icebound Straits, and it has the reddish glow of a squad car’s emergency lights contrasting with the chartreuse-green of Northern Lights descending over it in fuzzy green. Narlock said the shows of Northern Lights that people see from the ground are caused by electrically charged particles from space entering the Earth's upper atmosphere at a very high speed, spewed by our solar system’s star — the Sun. Another photo shows a brighter display of wavy green, seeming to hang from the heavens like curtains, and filling the horizon of lake ice crested by a thin dark line of the Upper Peninsula’s shoreline.
