“This is not an interview of that sort!” she laughed, adding, “But no, it was extraordinary…. You learn the factual things, you learn the structure, the interpretation, the history, but no teacher will tell you what is going to happen there. I was making jokes and all of that. Even then, he said, when commanding an entire orchestra, he felt a sense of incredible power – a theme that runs through Tár. So, in a way, I think that’s the life of Lydia Tár.” Dudamel added that the Fifth also reflects, in a way, the life of Tár’s title character.

If you’re lucky it happens once, maybe twice in your life – it’s happened to me in theatre and it’s happened to me a couple of times in film – but this was the process of encountering one another and it was all-consuming. And it seems to me that a group of dedicated cosplaying fans are ready to have a grand experience with the music as much, or more, than anybody in a stodgy Upper East Side concert hall. It reminds me that the moment of acceptance or publication or release is just a moment to get through, it is not necessarily that movie or book’s cultural life. I find it hard that people often assume – and I’m sure they do with you, in terms of the extraordinary things you write – that it was ever going to be thus. MN: I like this angle on Tár – that she’s tortured by a misstep in judgement, that the thrill and sometimes horror of being in relation to others is that we can’t know everything there is to know about other people. And you must answer it because it’s a catchphrase – it’s like an advertising slogan that we all must have an opinion about. I think that relates to someone like Krista who gets caught up in the situation and is not able to navigate that – and there’s no judgement in that because I think not everyone can or wants to. And because the film goes inside the maelstrom of the creative process, people reduce that to a simple, moralistic, judgmental narrative. So there’s a line when Tár says, “She wasn’t one of us.” And there are a thousand ways in which I suppose you could deliver that line but there was a sense of, “I made a mistake.” I remember someone was talking to me about a young sculptor who was incredibly talented, and his benefactor was saying, “I don’t know that he’s a genuine artist.” And I said, “What do you mean by that?” And he said, “I don’t think he has a sense of longevity. I write about art a lot – I’m putting together this book of art essays right now – and someone asked me the other day, “Why do artists always want writers to write about them? And that was an interesting angle on the movie – to watch it thinking about the work of teaching, of mentoring, of identifying and developing talent, and of course, the circulation of power. CB: But even if you are writing in a fragmentary way, is it just that we’re driven as a species to try to order and make sense of it?
Did you know Cate Blanchett, the 53-year-old Australian actor, has been married for 25 years? Let's meet her husband, and fellow Aussie, now!
29, 2022, Cate and Andrew have been married for 25 years. After three weeks of dating, Andrew proposed, and Cate said yes. Once they overcame their initial impressions of one another, Cate and Andrew fell hard and fast. The duo met in 1997 when Cate was starring in Chekhov’s play The Seagull, and their first impressions of each other were anything but stellar. In addition to working as a playwright, Andrew is a screenwriter and director. "He thought I was aloof and I thought he was arrogant,” she revealed.
Cate Blanchett showed off her chic sense of style as she arrived to the 25th Costume Designers Guild Awards in Los Angeles, California on Monday evening.

But I wasn’t thinking about Cate because of her skill as an actor — I was thinking about the impression I was left with after that meeting, and what it would be like to be in dialogue with her and lock arms and make a film together. The foyers of those places and the bars you rolled on to were the places that you started to try and pick that stuff apart. But that meeting was really important for me, because what Cate and I were talking about was another fascinating character — who was the creation of Joan Didion — in a script we had written together [political thriller As It Happens]. Field: And we were asking them to not be a band for hire, and to actually perform as characters in significant supporting roles. Field: By design, we were going to be doing all the conducting stuff at the end of the schedule. Our hope was that there would be a very lively discussion, informed by where people were coming from in their own lives, and that perhaps there would be some kind of ability in that debate for people to see things differently, in terms of expanding their own ideas and their own points of view. But you have to be conscious of the time in which the film is first seen by a public. I think you have to understand the circumstances and the atmospheres they find themselves in. I mean, certainly it was a very dense and dangerous experience making it, but how that experience has translated to audiences has superseded all my expectations. We had a screening a little while ago and the person moderating the discussion afterwards asked the audience, “How many of you have seen the film before?” And nearly half the hands shot up. But, with a film so visceral and unafraid to punch certain cultural buttons, that journey has also brought them the heat of controversy. To say that filmmaker Todd Field and leading actress Cate Blanchett are a meeting of minds would be an understatement.
She is predicted to scoop the award for Best Actress at the Oscars next month for her role in Todd Field directed film, Tár.

The very thing that had been a liberating force in her life was becoming a force that was allowing her not to look at herself, her past and her present circumstances.” It’s been nearly six months since Blanchett sat down and watched “Tár,” but that hasn’t stopped fans from repeatedly revisiting the film, hoping to eventually unravel its riddles. “I said, ‘Do you want me to play?’ And he said, ‘No, no, no.’ And then [during the shoot] Sebastian [Fahr-Brix], the first AD, said, ‘The accordion teacher’s here. I mean, you look at a Rothko and you go, ‘Rothko doesn’t want to get in the way.’ [Film] is very different, but these works, they vibrate — they’re very resonant. “It’s a very noisy world.” She thinks about all the interviews she gives, how she sometimes will say something to see how it feels to put it out in the air, only to see it later in print, presented forever as some sort of truth. “I don’t want to get in the way of whatever they brought to the cinema that day. This is not a conversation.’”) As imposing as her performances can be, there’s a touching self-consciousness to her in person — a fragility, a vulnerability — that’s quite disarming. Now, though, her experience must give way to the audience’s as it takes possession of “Tár,” which she’s thought about a lot. But I do look back on the thing, the object, with a touch of melancholy.” Earning her eighth Oscar nomination — she won supporting actress for “The Aviator” and lead actress for “Blue Jasmine” — Blanchett is at the pinnacle of her profession, delivering what may be her finest performance yet. The 53-year-old actress is known for not revisiting her work, which doesn’t mean she isn’t immensely proud of what she and her fellow artists created. “What I’ve learned from it and the takeaway from it, I can’t watch it anymore.”

In presenting the actors with their awards, he recalled his first meeting with Farrell at a pub, and with Gleeson after more than eight hours of theater (a staging of three of McDonagh’s early Irish plays, for which Gleeson stayed to the end). Speaking about “TÁR,” which is arguably her most celebrated and most talked-about performance, Blanchett said, “Sometimes a role hits you at a time when you’re open to the subterranean aspects of what the film is dealing with. “There was an element of integrity and decency about him that shone through.” [John Cleese](/cast-and-crew/john-cleese), who sought her for “ [A Fish Called Wanda](/reviews/a-fish-called-wanda-1988).” She shared a lesson she learned at the then-age of 25 about trusting her instincts. “This is a deep dive,” she remarked.
