How the Tetris Trailer Shares the Story of a Popular Video Game (MovieWeb)

In Apple TV+'s exclusive adaptation, a video game designer must traverse the dangerous Soviet Union to obtain the rights to Tetris.

A deep voice says that the cavalry is coming, and the audience is treated to a clash of two worlds as the car being driven by Pajitnov suddenly hits an oncoming vehicle. With the tension coming to a climax, Henk tells his wife that everybody is lying. After some quick shots that show the video game designer being dragged and beaten, he is then shown saying how all of this is insane to another off-screen character. Officially opening to a computer monitor with an early version of the classic game currently being played, Rogers exclaims the importance of Tetris to a potential investor by explaining how it’s a combination of art and music. After she tries to bring him back down from just the idea of becoming wealthy off the licensing of Tetris, he reminds her how quiet their apartment is and that’s because their two children are currently fixated on playing the game. Rogers then pushes forth by explaining Tetris’s mechanics, noting how it is a combination of "tetra" and "tennis," mostly because the inventor likes the sport.

In January 1990, two months after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Pajitnov visited the US for the first time as a guest of video game developer and publisher Spectrum HoloByte. Maxwell’s subsidiary Mirrorsoft had already sold the rights to Atari, which then sold them to Sega. Taken by surprise by its popularity, Stein approached state-owned company Elektronorgtechnica, more commonly known as Elorg, which handled the Soviet Union’s import and export of computer software, to retroactively sign a 10-year licence for Tetris. British actor Taron Egerton takes on the role of Henk Rogers, the Dutch video game designer who set his sights on securing the rights to distribute Tetris after realising its potential popularity. According to Pajitnov, it was soon being played on "every computer in Moscow", eventually gaining the government’s attention. Between 1987 and 1989, a version of the game was released on platforms owned by IBM, Spectrum, Amiga, Atari, Commodore and Amstrad.
