In 2019, Forbes reported that Nike’s share of the performance basketball market, predominantly due to the Jordan Brand, was 86%. In the 1990s and into the new millennium, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Zion Williamson and Luka Doncic, are some of the galacticos who have been added to the unequalled Nike gazebo that had been erected by Jordan. Indeed, the last time a Windy City-based outfit had got to go to a Finals was in the last years of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) before its merger with the National Basketball League (NBL) to establish the National Basketball Association (NBA) we all know and love today. Jordan had scored 45 points in the entire match. The fact that Jordan’s first shoe with Nike was banned by the NBA because it didn’t meet the league’s colour standards only served to provide unprecedented exposure and get the machine whirring. Jordan wore Converse kicks while playing for the Tar Heels at the University of North Carolina, wanted to go to Adidas upon going pro, but eventually signed a five-year deal with a base pay of $500,000 per year, with Nike (an amount that was triple any other NBA sneaker deal). We have heard that Babe Ruth pointed to the spot where he was going to knock it out of the park. We have heard that Alfredo Di Stéfano was the greatest 20th Century footballer in European competition. [Jordan won Rookie of the Year](https://www.thesportsman.com/features/on-this-day-35-years-ago-michael-jordan-was-named-nba-rookie-of-the-year#:~:text=On%20This%20Day%2035%20Years%20Ago%2C%20Michael%20Jordan%20Was,NBA%20Rookie%20Of%20The%20Year), it was at $105 million. Michael Jordan transcended basketball to become a global icon, a movie star and the greatest sneaker salesman in history. You have to go back all the way to Bill Russell, Red Auerbach and the Boston Celtics. On his landmark 60th birthday, we reflect on the career of Jordan, the man who went from basketball star to cultural sensation, and changed what it meant to be an athlete.

The more it moves into the past, the more the memories seem to float into the ether, much like Jordan seemed to float on air as he authored yet another gravity-defying and adjective-exhausting move to the basket. Off the court, particularly as the dynasty neared its end and the hysteria and fan frenzy around it intensified, Jordan had an aura. He enjoyed the give-and-take and took answering good questions seriously. He remains a global icon and one of the world’s most famous athletes. “I remember sticking out the tongue, doing the Jordan dunk, wanting to buy Jordans. Jordan favored those, too, lighting them up at every opportunity. In fact, Jordan was as real as an ice-cold glare or a dagger-like jumper. He treated losing with disdain and defiance. He bristled at failure. “He gave so many generations something to chase after,” current Bulls All-Star DeMar DeRozan said. You recognized the opportunity to cover sports history. Jordan changed the game and sports marketing.
