Part one of the Netflix thriller's latest installment finds Joe Goldberg flailing (and killing, of course) amid the U.K. elite.
[The White Lotus](https://www.avclub.com/tv/reviews/the-white-lotus)’ Lukas Gage plays her partner, Adam, and makes the most of his one-note character. He’s not wholly innocent, of course, and finds himself in a bloody mess of his own making once again. In her absence, he’s the sole notable performer of season four so far. [Netflix](https://www.avclub.com/what-to-watch-on-netflix-best-tv-shows-1848758095) (although the streamer’s decision to split the season is a ridiculous choice), which brought new life to the Lifetime original after picking it up for season two in 2019. The hunter becomes the hunted once the real killer takes a page out of [these burning questions](https://www.avclub.com/you-season-4-burning-questions-netflix-tv-thriller-1850065317), however, which is kind of a problem if you’re breaking it into two parts. One of the strongest hooks of previous seasons was Badgley and Pedretti’s incredibly chaotic back-and-forths. American Iconoclasts of the Short Story, of course. The man is drawn to it, whether he’s living in a New York City walkup, an affluent Los Angeles suburb with his family, or a spacious London loft by himself. Still, with the number of bodies he leaves behind every time he runs, how long can this go on? He’s not a swoon-worthy anti-hero; he’s a straight-up villain. Each season provides character development and backstory as he sincerely thinks he’s trying to improve.
The Netflix thriller's latest episodes have its antihero, played by Penn Badgley, on the back foot as he navigates the world of London's ultrarich.
In London, “not only are there people who have a ridiculous amount of money and have no idea what’s going on in the world, but they have titles,” Gamble said. “We never felt any responsibility to reform Joe, to give him a particularly happy ending,” Gamble said. It’s an evolution that Badgley is also keenly aware of: Joe is now “managing to grow emotionally, while not growing at all,” he said in a recent video interview. In Joe’s twisted mind, “he seems to actually respect her more,” he added. The stories he told himself with previous love interests, like Beck in Season 1 or Love, “stopped in those scenes with Marienne,” Gamble said. Setting the fourth season in London was, in part, a practical one: Paris would have been more complicated in terms of language and logistics. The season sees Joe “walking himself closer and closer to a self-awareness that he really won’t know what to do with,” Gamble said. Ahead of each new season, the production team ask themselves, “what kind of thriller we’re going to put him in,” Gamble said. His plans, however, are quickly scuppered when members of the ultrarich group of friends he resentfully joins start getting killed, and Joe must find the murderer before he’s framed for their crimes. (“In a more just society, we would all see Joe as problematic and not be interested in the show, but that’s not the society we live in,” Badgley [told The New York Times in 2019](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/24/arts/television/penn-badgley-you-netflix.html).) Not only is it set in London, but we soon find Joe on the back foot, being manipulated by a mysterious enemy who may be an even more accomplished killer. Marienne fled to Paris with her daughter — and Joe vowed to find her.
And in its fourth season, "You" is beginning to turn from sinister to soap opera. Penn Badgley's psychotic stalker and murderer Joe Goldberg has his own stalker ...
It doesn't help that the "eat the rich" subgenre has been done and redone on TV and film lately, much better than "You" manages here, at least in the first part of the season. The slice of British upper-crust society "You" slips Joe into this time around seems more of a caricature, perhaps a pitfall of transporting an American series abroad. A series intently fascinated with books and literature makes its inspiration well known from the outset, as Joe peruses a stack of Agatha Christie novels, searching for a formula that will help him find out who the "you" is. Of course, his life never stays quiet, and after one drunken night out with members of the upper class and a mysterious death, Joe is involved in a new crime spree and is drawn to yet another woman, icy Kate (Charlotte Ritchie, "Call the Midwife"). And in its fourth season, "You" is beginning to turn from sinister to soap opera. It might as well hit the audience over the head with a copy of "The Mousetrap."

But the breakneck speed of this season — on an already marathonable show — does warrant some unease: This season feels like You is racing toward the emotional climax of Joe’s story. The genius of You has always been knowing when and how to subvert genre to make it exponentially more compelling. All of Joe’s previous indiscretions (bodies) start to catch up to him when he’s targeted by the hottest new serial killer on the block, the Eat the Rich Killer. And regardless of where you end up placing your bets, it’s just straight-up satisfying to see Joe bested repeatedly, a loving reminder the noose is always tightening. The absolute best change of the season, however, is when You fully embraces a genre shift by diving headfirst into murder mystery tropes. To be clear, this is a nonsexual connection (sorry to the queers, I look forward to the fanfic), but there’s an interesting mirror between Joe’s relationship with Rhys and his relationship with Kate.

He also claims that "Heartbreak is always a catalyst for a new path" — one that we'll see unravel in season four of You. Joe cleans up the crime scene and plants evidence to frame Love for all the killings that ensued throughout the season, including the murder of his neighbors, Natalie and Gil. If that wasn't disturbing enough, he cut his own toes off to make a meat pie and fake his death for a clean slate (which he also frames Love for). After marrying and having a baby boy with Love Quinn (a.k.a his victim in season two), Joe moves to the suburban neighborhood of Madre Linda. After killing Marienne's boyfriend, Ryan, to get him out of the picture for good, Joe's plans to run away with her go awry when his wife finds out and attempts to poison him. The new season of You hits Netflix on Thursday, February 9, which means Joe Goldberg is about to wreak havoc on our TV screens yet again.

“You” has survived its fourth season, but that rope now looks seriously frayed. Yet while the fourth season begins in characteristically twisty fashion, before it’s over the Netflix hit feels dangerously close to jumping the shark, having become a bit too cute for its (or Your, if You prefer) own good. It’s during the second half, alas, when the story begins going off the rails, as the writers unleash developments that undermine the tantalizing place where the midseason break leaves off.
Season 4 of You is finally available on Netflix, bringing Penn Badgley back as the charming serial killer Joe Goldberg. And since no season of You can be ...
Although he doesn’t appreciate the company, Joe shares the evening with Malcolm and his rich friends, drinking to the point of total blackout. But seeing how Joe disposed of the body, the real killer is now intrigued and wants to know more about the professor. Joe didn’t kill Malcolm, and the culprit is probably one of the wealthy people Joe met the night before since the killer followed them after the party. To show how grateful he is to Jonathan for saving Kate from the robbers, Malcolm drags his colleague to Sundry House, a nightclub for the wealthy. After the assault, Joe asks Kate not to mention him to the police since his working visa is shaky. Bored by his mundane life, Joe is attracted to Kate and gives into his obsession by researching more about the woman. Due to his white knight complex, Joe intervenes and saves Kate from the criminals. Also, Joe is asked to get rid of Marienne, the only person that knows he’s alive. That’s because, for Season 4, Joe uses the identity of Jonathan Moore to score a job as a literature professor in a college in London. Freed from his marital ties, Joe decides to go to Europe, where Marienne goes with her daughter Juliette (Dallas Skye) to escape the killer after learning about his true nature. After staging his death, Joe goes to Paris to search for Marianne. And since no season of You can be like the previous one, the series is once again taking us to uncharted territories by giving Joe a new identity and carrying him across the ocean.

Subverting repetitive patterns and finding new directions to pull Joe in is the name of the game for season 4. The second part of season 4, arriving a month later than the first, is the better half, so it's worth sticking it out in this world of the British royal adjacent. He and Joe share a love of books, among other similarities. But you know it's just a matter of time, because it's Joe. Joe is quickly entangled in business he strictly set out to avoid. Flashbacks to Paris reveal what happened when Joe first escaped the mess he left behind in the US.
Joe Goldberg returns for another rousing game of cat-and-mouse on You Season 4 — only this time, he's the mouse.
Eventually, Joe is shocked to find that Rhys is both his stalker as well as the killer. That’s not going away anytime soon.) And now that Rhys has his number, he’s ready to deliver a dose of Joe Goldberg justice. Once he’s back in London, the news is aflutter with the news of the latest killing … There’s never been such a disconnect in the way that Joe presents himself to the outside world and what he’s really thinking in the innermost reaches of his devious brain. Thanks to his star pupil Nadia, Joe has already read “Good Man, Cruel World,” Rhys’s captivating memoir of how he went from rags to riches, pulling himself out of a childhood of trauma and poverty and ending up in the company of high society. Under the principle of Chekov’s gun — a gun in the first act will resurface by the third — it seems that Marianne will somehow come into play later in the season. Why the detective accepted a simple image of a locket as proof of her murder is perplexing, but whatever. The first half of the season establishes the cat-and-mouse game between Joe and his stalker, even revealing the man behind the shady, disappearing texts in the final few moments of the Part 1 finale. Joe’s focus immediately shifts as he scrambles to try and figure out who is stalking him, why, and what they have planned for him in the long run. When we first check in with Joe, he’s living a pretty normal life, working as a professor of literature and spending his nights curled up with a book and a cuppa in his fancy flat. It’s a delightful twist that upends the typical You narrative, putting Joe Goldberg on the defensive instead of the offensive. While Roald, who supected Joe was the “Eat the Rich” killer, is knocked out, Rhys tells Joe that he plans to pin the “Eat the Rich” murders on Roald to save both of them. He continued, “Then to go further and really uncover what he’s all about in relation to the show, and that actually is much beyond how we first see him and even how he unravels later on,” he continues. When Joe struggles to kill Roald, Rhys sets the room on fire and tells Joe that he plans to frame him instead for the “Eat the Rich” murders while leaving him and Roald to die. “He tries to open up Joe’s eyes to another way of thinking and understanding, and he’s very persuasive.” He continued, “It was one of the big things I talked through with [creator and showrunner] Sera Gamble before starting. “Some of these characters can sometimes come across quite heightened, which actually allows a lot of room to play and a lot of freedom,” he explains. Rhys tells Joe that he wants him to kill Roald, and he will take care of everything else to frame Roald as the “Eat the Rich” killer. “And I feel that what I got to embody with Rhys, or got to try and take on, was the idea of someone balancing himself between two walks of society, two walks of life, and actually as a result struggling with what his existence was growing up. I was going to ask about The White Lotus because of Lukas Gage. And I was like, "That guy from White Lotus!" When I got the part, I had a meeting with Sera Gamble, our showrunner; John Scott, our director; and some of the other writers. There's another socialite in England who passed away a few years ago named Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, and I got a lot of inspiration from her and her talk show appearances. But in London, more so in the '90s, there was this culture in the tabloids about our royal family and the people associated with them. But there was a caveat of her being lovely and genuine. So I thought she was safe. The series does a really good job of creating very unlikeable characters or making you love a character and killing them off. I enjoyed playing the upper-class-removed-from-reality character and poking fun at it. They'd schedule 15 scenes on one day and you could work across four units; that's working across 16 episodes, potentially, on a busy period of the year. This video covers 9 minutes of gameplay that takes place after Cal crash lands on Koboh and must seek out help to repair his ship, The Mantis.](/videos/star-wars-jedi-survivor-9-minutes-of-gameplay-ign-first) This season gives Badgley a lot to work with and great scene partners to bounce off, giving a truly complex performance that reflects on his past, his failed romances, his traumas, and what is next for him. He’s tired and not looking for any trouble, and there is a lightness to him (after literally burning everything down and fleeing the country last season) that is more controlled, mature, and open. It’s new for Joe – and new for us – to see that he may actually have a mature match that accepts his past. He’s particularly good-natured with one of his students, the jaded Nadia (Amy-Leigh Hickman), who’s playing the younger sibling role to Joe, reminiscent of his relationship with Paco from season 1 and Ellie from season 2. Season 4 provides us with another great round of all of that and more, giving Joe a complex new situation that challenges his sense of duty, while still telling a story that’s a bloody good time.
