UNHCR’s Representation for the Nordic and Baltic Countries is pleased to announce a call for applicants for a pilot Refugee Speakers Programme in Lithuania in 2023. The programme seeks to give aspiring speakers with a refugee background an opportunity to develop their public speaking and storytelling skills. There are limited spaces and UNHCR will respect and prioritize diversity in the selection of participants. We also encourage participants to themselves explore potential speaking opportunities. The programme will take place during the spring of 2023. Working level English language skills are required – and applicants need to feel comfortable speaking publicly in either English or Lithuanian.

Since the deal, the federal government has restored basic services and humanitarian aid to the region. As part of the agreement, Tigrayan fighters have handed over heavy weapons to the federal government, while Amhara special forces have left the Tigray region. Since arriving in Ethiopia on February 5, Grandi also has met with the president of Ethiopia and with Eritrean refugees in Alemwach camp in Amhara.

UNHCR distributed clothing kits to 49 vulnerable asylum-seekers and refugees, including 11 women and 11 children, and sanitary pads to 16 women in the Serraj Office in Tripoli. Last week, 18 best interest assessments and 89 protection needs assessments were conducted with children and adults to identify their protection concerns, and assess their needs, including referrals to specialized services. Partner International Rescue Committee (IRC) attended to the operation providing medical assistance and non-food items (NFIs) to the survivors. JMC provides medical services and shelter to asylum-seekers and refugees, while their premises also host the PCR testing and serve as a gathering point for individuals as part of the departure procedures from Libya to third countries. On 2 February, a ceremony was held to mark the construction of the new broadcasting tower in the Abusliem Stadium as part of the Sport for Peace project, which was initiated in September 2021, with sport at its heart.
