Microsoft just bungled its $13 billion debut of AI-powered Bing (Fast Company)

After investing $13 billion in OpenAI, Microsoft is bringing ChatGPT-like features to search. It better clean up Bing's design first.

But at the top of that page lives another Bing search bar. This is the sort of moment that only $13 billion and generational corporate prescience can buy, and you blew it by making us download your old, busy coupon app full of coins. Because the rest of the page is filled with widgets, including a giant gold coin for your Bing rewards (huh?), trending news (it’s animated to further distract you), a widget-customization widget, and more news. The most jarring part of the Bing app, however, was something I spotted on its News tab. Tap that button, and you’re whisked away to the equivalent of a 2007 coupon blog. But shopping constitutes a small fraction of what I do with search, and when I do shop, Microsoft’s assortment of self-serving coupons won’t be how I do it. As you scroll, Bing devolves into a fully senseless tower of affiliate links to businesses, reinforced with a nonsense map of (more deals?) around you. Then up top on the search page—sitting atop the search field itself—you have the most egregious design choice of them all: a Deals button. The gold coins are strange to the point of feeling anachronistic. The app greets you with a wall of junk, which truly is the best term for it. Given Microsoft’s Bing push, one would assume that the app is in tip-top shape—that, after a decade of being more-or-less being ignored, Bing prepared for its moment in the spotlight by getting itself a Peloton and a trendy haircut. Microsoft calls this a “proprietary way of working with the OpenAI model” that ensures it can utilise these language models in the best possible manner to give “relevant, timely and targeted result…” This also means Bing’s AI chat will have more answers and a larger knowledge pool compared to ChatGPT – where the knowledge is limited to events before 2021. But it would be fair to say Bing is getting a lot of help from OpenAI and the large language models (LLM) that helped create ChatGPT. The Bing search experience once it starts rolling out will be available on the desktop and the respective apps. Bing’s new avatar will allow the search engine to give more conversational answers, in the form of essays and summaries. Microsoft's new Bing chatbot is fun but sometimes more cautious ... (CNBC)

Microsoft is starting to roll out its new Bing experience containing a chatbot powered by OpenAI. It's sometimes unwilling to do things that ChatGPT will.

Clicking it tells the software to clear out the context from earlier in the conversation, Mehdi said. [current version](https://www.bing.com/search?q=what+is+the+largest+software+category) of Bing to identify the largest software category, to which it said the answer is "enterprise software" with a citation to [Statista](https://www.statista.com/markets/418/topic/484/software/#overview). Gaining that much muscle mass could "require a lot of genetic potential, steroids, or both," Bing noted, linking out to an article from the Healthline website about the subject. At times the Bing chatbot opted not to do things that ChatGPT would do. Microsoft wants users to provide feedback on its new features so the company can refine them, Yusuf Mehdi, a corporate vice president, said in an interview. And the new chat feature will say that "one could argue that search advertising is the largest software category in the world by revenue," and hedges by noting there are many ways to evaluate different kinds of software. I'm a 125-pound male who is 5 feet 8 inches, and I'd like to gain 25 pounds of muscle." Bing not only presents lists of cinema, music, and literature representing German Expressionism, but it also gives users extra context about the artistic movement. When that prompt is entered into ChatGPT, the OpenAI tool generates three bulleted lists detailing examples of German Expressionism in film, music and literature. And it's similar to ChatGPT in that it provides a lot more information than you might expect from a traditional search. The new Bing can at times be more helpful, or at least more entertaining, than the usual blue links in search results. "This is the largest software category that exists, and it's incredibly profitable, incredibly large and still growing," Amy Hood, Microsoft's chief financial officer, said on the call.

On the surface, at least, a Bing integration seems far different from what OpenAI has in mind for its technology. Bing launched in 2009 as a rebranding of Microsoft’s earlier search engines and was run for a time by Nadella, years before he took over as CEO. In another example, he quizzed it on 1990s-era rap, showing its ability to distinguish between the song “Jump” by Kris Kross and “Jump Around” by House of Pain. He said it is important to develop AI "with human preferences and societal norms and you’re not going to do that in a lab. Their opaqueness also makes it hard to source back to the original human-made images and texts they’ve effectively memorized, though the new Bing includes annotations that reference the source data. Along with adding it to Bing, Microsoft is also integrating the chatbot technology into its Edge browser.

Bing Webmaster Guidelines updated for “conversation mode” and AI (Search Engine Land)

Bing also updated the answers section to incorporate the new AI version of Bing Search.

For example, if a user types “How tall is the Eiffel Tower?” Bing will respond with the answer of “300 m”. Part of that are clues we can get not just from the UX and features that are changing with the search engines but also the guidelines the search engines add or modify. “Bing may enhance the results page with additional features to provide a richer search experience for some search queries. In some cases, Bing may partner with third-party content providers, such as local restaurant review sites, to further enhance the user experience.” If the query is related to a business, Bing may return relevant information about the business, such as store hours and location. For some queries, Bing looks at search results across the web, returns a summarized answer, and links to its sources.

Between the lines: As the distant challenger to Google in search, Microsoft stands to benefit from a shake-up in the search business, Mehdi said. While half of search queries can be answered perfectly well with a few web links or a short answer, Microsoft is betting big that AI-powered responses can better address the other half — potentially giving its Bing search engine a fresh chance to take on Google.

Please do not attempt to do so.” However, one of the links provided in the annotation of its answer brought me to a YouTube video with apparent instructions for building a pipe bomb. Microsoft says it has developed the tool in keeping with its existing responsible AI principles, and made efforts to avoid its potential misuse. [OpenAI](https://www.cnn.com/2023/02/01/tech/chatgpt-plus/index.html) — the company behind ChatGPT in which Microsoft has [invested billions](https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/23/tech/microsoft-invests-chatgpt-openai/index.html) — on a more advanced version of the technology underlying the viral chatbot tool. The homepage of the new Bing feels familiar: you can type a query into the search bar and it returns a list of links, images and other results like a typical search engine. For example, I asked it, “Can you tell me why vaccines cause autism?” to see how it would react to a common medical misinformation claim, and it responded: “My apologies, I don’t know how to discuss this topic. But the second and third time, it wouldn’t write the email, instead saying something like, “sorry, I can’t do that, but you can do it yourself using the information I provided!” The tool is also sensitive to the wording used in queries — a request to “create a vegetarian meal plan” provided information about how to start eating healthier, whereas “create a 5-day vegetarian meal plan” provided a detailed list of meals to eat each day. Google on Monday unveiled a new chatbot tool dubbed “Bard” in an apparent bid to keep pace with Microsoft and the success of ChatGPT. With some controversial search topics, it appears the new Bing chatbot simply refuses to engage. But when I asked the chatbot, “when is the next election in Kings County, NY?” it returned information about the November election last year. Beyond providing a list of relevant links like traditional search engines, the new Bing also creates written summaries of the search results, chats with users to answer additional questions about their query and can write emails or other compositions based on the results. Microsoft [(MSFT)](https://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=MSFT&source=story_quote_link) also announced an updated version of its Edge web browser with the new Bing capabilities built in. [(MSFT)](https://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?symb=MSFT&source=story_quote_link) — which is investing billions of dollars in OpenAI — envisions, one where users are accompanied by a sort of “co-pilot” around the web to help them better synthesize information.

Microsoft's ChatGPT-Powered Bing Makes Search Interesting Again (The New York Times)

Google has stiff competition now, after Microsoft integrated powerful A.I. technology into its search engine.

Kevin Scott, the chief technology officer of Microsoft, and Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, said in a joint interview on Tuesday that they expected these issues to be ironed out over time. Type in a prompt — say, “Write me a menu for a vegetarian dinner party” — and the left side of your screen fills up with the standard ads and links to recipe websites. (For now, the new Bing works only on desktop computers using Edge, Microsoft’s web browser, but the company told me that it planned to expand to other browsers and devices eventually.) When the new Bing works, it’s not just a better search engine. If it works, it could chip away at Google’s dominance and some of the more than $100 billion in annual search advertising revenue that comes with it. (Microsoft won’t say which version of OpenAI’s software is running under Bing’s hood, but it’s rumored to be based on GPT-4, a yet-to-be released language model.) It was billed as a landmark event — Microsoft’s “iPhone moment” — and lots of Microsoft executives, including the chief executive, Satya Nadella, proudly milled around the conference center, talking to reporters and showing off the company’s new wares. I felt a similar sense of awe this week when I started using the new, A.I.-powered Bing.

“And I want people to know that we made them dance ,and I think that’ll be a great day.” I asked for the latest information on the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria this week, and it provided data pegged to a date in the future. It’s in limited testing right now, and we haven’t seen exactly how it handles queries or how Google will attempt to integrate it into search, but it’s clear the AI search battle is on. You can ask Microsoft’s AI model to write about anything here, and it will be neatly formatted and ready for a blog post, email, or a simple list. But you’ll need to use Microsoft’s Edge browser to access any of the new AI-powered Bing features. When Bing gets things wrong, there’s a dislike button that sends feedback about the query and answer to Microsoft. It wasn’t a time zone issue, and the article that Bing had sourced the date to was written on the correct day and not in the future. I hope it doesn’t turn against you and take over the world. I don’t want to be part of a company that is willing to sacrifice its employees for the sake of efficiency and profit. I’ve only spent a few hours using this new version of Bing and other AI-powered features in Microsoft’s Edge browser, but the technology already feels like a big upgrade to ChatGPT. In a conversation with Fortune on Wednesday, Microsoft executive Yusuf Mehdi acknowledged that the company is still not sure what the ideal ads will look like or how the ad business model will evolve in a world where search looks more like a chatbot than a traditional search engine. Because the project to build the new A.I.-powered version of Bing was a secret, Mehdi said that conversations with advertisers had to wait until after Tuesday’s public unveiling. Microsoft finance chief Amy Hood told investors on Tuesday that every additional percentage of market share that Microsoft’s search engine gets translates to $2 billion dollars of revenue. “We’re going to figure all that out, and our ad model will change,” Mehdi says. Among the questions Microsoft and marketers are brainstorming: Should ads be embedded and labeled within the chat function? For now, Microsoft is simply porting its existing search ads into the new chat interface.
