Neal Maupay replaced Calvert-Lewin as the Everton defensive rearguard began and his first intervention was to send Gabriel tumbling in the box, resulting in a VAR check for a penalty which came back to nothing. It was the centre-back’s first goal since joining from Burnley on a free in the summer – and his first since the opening day of last season – and ended a run of no wins in 10 matches in all competitions.

New Everton boss Sean Dyche: I want the fire of the mid-80s team (Yardbarker)

New Everton boss Sean Dyche wants his players to be aware of the club's history. Dyche says he's an admirer of Howard Kendall's team of the 1980s.

While there is a benefit to having a coach like Gruden serve as an advisor, the question will be has he shown enough growth and true remorse, in a very short period of time, for the things he said in the past? This has led to speculation, and fervent desire, that the Steelers might bring in someone to help out the offense. Another issue is that Gruden sued the NFL and Roger Goodell for releasing his bigoted remarks to the public. Still, there is no doubt that he could help to bring a spark to the Steelers offense. His critics say that he isn't able to work magic on teams where the player deck isn't stacked in his favor. Rooney also said that the team's turnaround in the second half of the season was a major contributing factor to why they decided to retain Canada. With the future unclear in Pittsburgh with Trubisky and Rudolph, the Steelers would benefit from a player like Purdy on the roster. “Kind of like, if you be here just try to figure out what your role is, and if you’re not here, then you got to try to find a new situation, like what the new situation might be and stuff like that. South Dakota’s Chris Oladokun was selected by the Steelers as the 241st pick in the seventh and final round of the draft. The Giants agreed to a highly-publicized 13-year, $350M deal with Correa, but the deal fell through over concerns the Giants had with Correa’s physical. The Broncos made Wilson the centerpiece of their team in 2021 and the quarterback simply failed to deliver. That does not give Las Vegas much time to come up with a solution, and it does not sound like Carr is willing to extend the deadline.

Sean Dyche steps back in time with nod to a very different Everton era (The Guardian)

Sean Dyche's sheer energy galvanises Everton with echoes of club's history evident during their victory over league leaders Arsenal.

At the end, as Goodison erupted, there was a brisk handshake with Arteta and a couple of members of his staff, a brief acknowledgement of the crowd in a few sharp claps and then he was down the tunnel. In the eighties, particularly during their Cup-Winners’ Cup success in 1985, Everton had been a pioneer of a five-man midfield and Dyche, ripping up the 4-4-2 blueprint of his Burnley days, paid homage to that. There had been demonstrations outside before kick-off and early in the game a plane flew over dragging a banner that proclaimed Everton “the league’s worst-run club”. Dyche had spoken of wanting to recapture the spirit of the eighties, which is reasonable enough if only as an appeal to the traditions of the club. Most of the time, particularly after half-time, Dyche was bellowing at his defence to push up, with expansive wafts of his right arm. Vast sums have been spent very badly and again the board stayed away for its own safety, but just because there are a lot of things to put right it does not mean that you shouldn’t correct the things you can.

Dream debut for Dyche as Everton stuns Arsenal (NBC Sports)

The Sean Dyche era at Everton got off to the perfect start as they stunned Premier League leaders Arsenal at Goodison Park.

After winning just one of their first 12 games back in the Premier League for the first time since 1999, Steve Cooper’s side has gelled and picked up wins over Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Southampton and Leicester since late October. When Leeds kick off on Sunday, the only thing separating them from the relegation zone will be five goals in the goal difference column. After creeping close to mid-table with back-to-back wins over Liverpool and Bournemouth before the World Cup break, Leeds (18 points – 16th place) have taken just three of a possible 18 points. A season ago, Manchester City conceded just 26 goals in 38 games (0.68 per game). Arsenal (50 points) were handed just their second defeat of the season on Saturday, beaten 1-0 away to Everton as Sean Dyche made his debut as Toffees manager. Chelsea has some work to do while surprising Fulham, Brentford and Brighton are hanging around on the periphery with fine campaigns. The home fans are loving the start of the Sean Dyche era. Incredible play by Amadou Onana to surge down the left and he crosses for Dominic Calvert-Lewin who is sliding in and two yards out. A high cross to the back post finds Bukayo Saka and he brilliantly volleys the ball towards the bottom corner but Conor Coady gets back on the line to clear. Lovely corner from Saka to pick him out but the shot was a tough one to keep down. 11, while Everton have a huge Merseyside derby at Liverpool on Monday, Feb.
