Arsenal fail physical test at Everton; Dyche makes impact (ESPN)

With a new manager and a noisy crowd behind them, Everton finally showed some fight to stun league leaders Arsenal at Goodison Park.

[Vitaliy Mykolenko](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/262594/vitalii-mykolenko) -- The Everton defender gave a really strong performance against [Bukayo Saka](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/280555/Bukayo-Saka). [Ben White](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/241077/Ben-White) -- The [Arsenal](/soccer/team?id=359) right-back has struggled for form since returning early from England's World Cup squad. [Statistics](https://www.espn.com/soccer/stats/_/league/eng.1) [Standings](https://www.espn.com/soccer/table/_/league/eng.1) When Dyche was appointed last week, only the most optimistic Everton fan -- and optimism has been thin on the ground here for a while -- would have backed the new boss to get anything from his first two games in charge. Arsenal's first league defeat since September has given Manchester City the chance to claim top spot when they travel to the Emirates on Feb. But Arsenal didn't do that and allowed Everton to grow in confidence with every 50-50 challenge. [Manchester United](/soccer/team?id=360) in September, but they failed to match Everton for fight or commitment at Goodison Park. Having played for Everton and experienced the Goodison Park crowd firsthand, Arteta will have known what awaited his side in this game.

Everton 1-0 Arsenal: James Tarkowski stuns league leaders as ... (Eurosport.com)

The Sean Dyche effect is already well and truly underway at Everton as the former Burnley manager got off to a winning start at his new club as James ...

Nketiah dances past two on the left and lays the ball back for Odegaard, who blazes a first-time shoot over the bar. Epitomised the energy, desire and industry required to be part of a Dyche side. Everton come again down the left flank and Doucoure ghosts into acres of space in the box but contrives to miscue his free header wide from McNeil’s pinpoint cross. Onana bursts down the left and charges into the area. The focus now must be on bouncing back against Brentford with a crunch home clash with Man City just four days later on February 15. Goodison Park has not been a happy hunting ground for them in recent years and they will be keen to cast this aside as a mere blip.

Arsenal have shown why they could win the title – at Everton we saw ... (The Athletic)

And then, in this match at Goodison Park — their very next league game — they showed some of the reasons they may ultimately fall short. Arsenal simply did not ...

[Thomas Partey](https://theathletic.com/football/player/thomas-partey-WvYPPsYnodFQ5XO1/) and [Martin Odegaard](https://theathletic.com/football/player/martin-odegaard-hRSWwjJppH2Xn0jr/) during the second half. It is up to his players to determine whether this result is remembered as a temporary blip or a critical slip in the title race. This journey is going to be difficult and challenging and there are going to be big stones in the middle and we have to overcome that. Goodison Park has been a difficult ground for this manager, and this team — Arteta has now lost on each of his three visits to his former club in the Arsenal dugout. [Eddie Nketiah](https://theathletic.com/football/player/eddie-nketiah-DEv6ydhcRGewFPXs/) has deputised effectively for the Brazilian, but Jesus’ capacity to drop deep and help build the play was missed here. The Ukrainian’s passion has been a feature of Arsenal’s superb first half of the season — but now, after two consecutive defeats across league and cup, is a time for cool heads. By the time they eventually worked the ball out to him, the Brazilian was outnumbered in a two-v-one. Their replacements, debutant [Jorginho](https://theathletic.com/football/player/jorginho-MvC0hVi06208wo5E/) and [Fabio Vieira](https://theathletic.com/football/player/fabio-vieira-FgNHmkTUv1GO03Gb/), struggled to cope with the physicality of Everton’s approach. On the pitch, they struggled to show it. The congestion in the centre of the pitch meant there was often space out wide. Dyche found an antidote by deploying a trio of aggressive ball-winners and setting up the team in a narrow system designed to slow Arsenal’s ball progression through the middle of the pitch. It was a performance with the mark of champions.

Dyche dents Gunners' title charge! Winners, losers & ratings as ... (Goal.com)

Arsenal were on the receiving end of Everton's new manager bounce as they slipped to a costly defeat 1-0 to Sean Dyche's men on Saturday.

They were second best all afternoon and could easily have been behind before Tarkowski towered over Odegaard to head home Dwight McNeil’s corner on the hour mark. The defeat - Arsenal’s third in a row at Goodison Park - could see their lead at the top of the table cut to just two points if Manchester City win at Tottenham on Sunday, although the Gunners would still have a game in hand. The home side went into the game having lost eight of their last nine matches in all competitions but, inspired by new manager Sean Dyche, they outfought and outplayed the Premier League leaders on Merseyside.

Everton - Arsenal - Match Report (Arsenal.com)

James Tarkowski netted the only goal of the game to condemn us to only our second league defeat of the season.

With a precious three points now in their grasp, Everton began to sit back and protect them, allowing us a few more sights of goal. Copyright 2023 The Arsenal Football Club plc. There was plenty more late pressure but Everton were throwing everything at us, and that meant that a late drive from Oleksandr Zinchenko that whistled over the bar was our best late chance of note as we failed to score in a Premier League game for just the second time this campaign.
