The left rear suspension was damaged after being hit from behind by a GTD car, and the Brazilian was unhappy after bringing the car back to the garage for 25 minutes of damage repairs. Job van Uitert leads from Esteban Gutierrez in the #04 CrowdStrike Racing with APR Oreca in second. Currently third in GTD Pro is the #14 Vasser Sullivan Racing Lexus RC F GT3 of Mike Conway. There’s still plenty of time for the next three cars to catch up in case of trouble. The #60 MSR Acura has been taking tyres out of sequence with the two Chip Ganassi Racing-run Cadillacs in front and behind it, so Braun is due to make his next stop. He was leading Colin Braun in the #60 Meyer Shank Racing with Curb-Agajanian Acura ARX-06 by thirty seconds at the time of his most recent stop.

A viewer's guide to the 2023 Rolex 24 at Daytona: What to watch in ... (NBC Sports)

A viewer's guide to the 61st Rolex 24 at Daytona, which will feature the debut of the GTP prototype category and a return to old-school endurance racing.

Nelson believes that will happen anywhere between the sixth and 18th hour – but probably on the early end in a concept similar to short pitting in NASCAR. –Electric pit stops: Though it’s not IMSA-mandated, teams are using electric power only to enter and exit the pits for myriad reasons. If mechanical problems do crop up for the GTP cars, the door will be opened for a victory by a car in the junior LMP2 prototype class. The LMP2 cars lap a few seconds slower and will need to make roughly nine extra pit stops than the GTP cars. Cadillac also has done significant real-world testing, but Acura admittedly has done little endurance testing, and BMW has tried to play catch up since being the last automaker to commit to the project. To debut at the Rolex 24 is such a high-stakes event and puts such a big test on everybody. Porsche was the first to commit and has logged more than 30,000 kilometers of testing. “We don’t have enough time yet to be able control fully the reliability, and we haven’t done enough laps to be able to say what’s going to break first or second. It’s going to be a team that’s able to repair the car the fastest way possible. It’s a little more like it used to be about reliability and making sure you take care of your equipment. The pressure all the manufacturers and teams are under is immense. But there’s no guarantee that any of the cars will finish the race.

Through the Hour 8 mark of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, Acuras and Cadillacs ran well while the Tower Motorsports LMP2 had a tough start.

The #6 Porsche began billowing smoke from out of the rear and eventually limped to a stop in the Le Mans Chicane, bringing out the tenth FCY of the race. The stop came at just the right time for the #02 Cadillac Racing car, as well as the #60 MSR Acura which was now, finally, back on the same fuel sequence as the Cadillacs surrounding it. The race for the victory took a big swing with three hours and 40 minutes to go, after the #20 High Class Racing Oreca LMP2 07 of Anders Fjordbach lost control entering the Le Mans Chicane.
