Breaking News: Microsoft Azure Outage Wipes Out Teams, 365, and ... (Data Center Knowledge)

Microsoft experienced a three-hour outage to its core M365 offerings due to Azure network issues.

While the two outages vary in source, the widespread impact is a common feature of these and all outages from major organizations. And more firms are paying upward of $1 million to survive the aftereffects of an outage, with the number of firms paying out seven figures rising to 15%, up from 11% in previous years. This can dramatically reduce the time it takes to get back in business following a disaster to help you meet your specified recovery time objective (RTO). A change the firm made to its WAN severed connectivity between the internet and Microsoft’s core suite of services. When a contractor deleted said files, the system slowed and NOTAM alerts were unavailable to pilots, grounding domestic flights across the U.S. The outage in multiple regions lasted for three hours and affected Azure resources in Public Azure regions.

Microsoft Earnings Call: New-Business 'Slowdown,' Big AI Bets | CRN (CRN)

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella used the 2Q earnings call to talk about business growth deceleration, OpenAI, Teams and other topics.

“In the first half of the year, over 70 percent of our revenue came from our commercial business and over 70 percent of that from Microsoft Cloud,” she said. I’m confident in the ability of our Microsoft team to manage the near term by continuing to position ourselves for the future.” In the second half of the fiscal year, Microsoft expects a deceleration in business revenue growth, with full-year operating margins dropping by 2 points in U.S. Windows OEM revenue should drop by “mid to high 30s,” similar to the overall PC market. And Microsoft also expects “relatively flat” growth in commercial bookings year over year in part due to the slowdown. The “more personal computing” segment revenue should bring in $11.9 billion to $12.3 billion. Hood said that small and midsize businesses—a segment partners usually work in—and frontline worker offerings drove seat growth in this part of the business. “One of the things was, what’ll happen to Teams usage after the pandemic?” Nadella said. “The age of AI is upon us and Microsoft is powering it,” he said. The number of organizations with four or more workloads increased over 40 percent year over year.” Windows commercial products and cloud services will see “relatively flat” revenue growth year over year due in part to the slowdown. In Microsoft’s consumption business, customers have been “looking to bank some savings on some workloads and then start [a new project],” Nadella said on the call.

“This is the phenomenon of ‘everyday AI’ where AI is just in the background and customers take it for granted.” Nadella said the company will continue to invest in “strategic areas for our future” and pointed to advances in AI as “the next major wave” of computing. Integrating ChatGPT too quickly into Microsoft’s products could run the risk of schools rethinking their use of that software. Both ChatGPT and DALL-E are trained on vast amounts of data in order to generate content. Microsoft, he said, will likely want to “wait before letting GPT systems answer online search queries.” That has raised some concerns about the potential of these tools to perpetuate biases found in that data and to spread misinformation. Microsoft could bring back Clippy, but make him, like, smart (CNN)

This week, Microsoft confirmed it's planning to invest billions in OpenAI, the company behind the viral new chatbot tool ChatGPT.

But it’s a smart one for a company whose value boils down to the fact that consumers are addicted to it. That’s five bucks total, not five bucks in addition to the cost of the medicine. (OK, most nights — we believe in a four-day work week around here.) The bottom line: As for Amazon, this program is almost certainly a loss-maker, analysts say. Amazon has been moving steadily into health care, minus a few stumbles (we’re looking at you, Amazon Care), for years. Some potential use cases include writing lines of text for a PowerPoint presentation, drafting an essay in Word or doing automatic data entry in Excel spreadsheets. “There is a kernel of truth to the Clippy comparison,” David Lobina, an artificial intelligence analyst at ABI Research, told Sam.
