When Malcom died, the 90% stake he had was split equally among his children. There is also reported interest from the United States, the Middle East and Asia. This makes it the first time that Jim Ratcliffe’s interest in buying the 20-time League champions has been made public.

With Liverpool also up for sale, Tottenham entertaining minority investment, and other global clubs in flux, plenty of changes could be on the horizon. Those links could pose an issue if two of the clubs were to qualify for Champions League but only if Ineos are the majority owner of two clubs that were to make it as multiple minority stakes are okay. The Glazers were initially interested in selling a minority stake but it's unknown how much of the team Ratcliffe will try to secure.

Manchester United takeover: Ineos and Jim Ratcliffe officially enter ... (SportsPro Media)

Chemicals giant founder confirms he has put himself forward to acquire Premier League giants from Glazer family.

A stumbling block for Ratcliffe could be his ownership of other European clubs. He bought the Ligue 1 club in 2019 for €100 million (US$108 million) – United have been valued north of UK£5 billion (US$6.2 billion). However, there will be no issues provided they don’t play in the same competition. One of Ratcliffe’s reasons for buying Nice was he felt at the time that English soccer teams were overvalued. Ratcliffe and Ineos are the first to publicly declare their intention of acquiring United. While Ratcliffe’s wider sports portfolio includes French top-tier soccer outfit Nice and Switzerland’s Lausanne, United are an entirely different commitment for the 70-year-old.
